Project Title: New Day Camp
Project Description:

New Day Camp is a week long summer camp in Oklahoma that serves children ages 8–14, as well as a Leaders in Training (LIT) program for youth ages 15–17, who have been impacted by parental incarceration. These children often face emotional stress, stigma, and instability that affect their health, education, and overall wellbeing. New Day Camp provides a safe, supportive environment where youth can build resilience, experience joy, and develop the skills needed to thrive.

Throughout the week, campers participate in a variety of structured activities that support their physical, emotional, and social development. Daily programming includes outdoor recreation such as high ropes courses, hiking, swimming, and team sports that encourage physical activity, confidence, and teamwork. Campers also participate in creative arts programming, including music, crafts, and expressive activities that allow them to process emotions and build self esteem.

Educational components are woven throughout the camp experience through leadership development, mentorship from trained staff and volunteers, and life skills activities that encourage communication, decision making, and positive goal setting. Youth in the Leaders in Training program gain additional leadership experience by assisting with camp activities, mentoring younger campers, and learning responsibility through guided service opportunities.

For many participants, New Day Camp is their first opportunity to experience a traditional summer camp in a stable and encouraging setting. By addressing the arts, education, health, and welfare needs of children affected by incarceration, New Day Camp helps young people build confidence, strengthen relationships, and return home with renewed hope for their future.

Project Title: High School Equivalency for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:

The Day Education Program supports youth as they work to achieve their high school equivalency (HSE) and better their lives. Youth in our programs are referred through the Department of Child Services or Juvenile Justice system.

Without a high school diploma or equivalency, it is difficult to earn enough money to break the cycles of poverty, abuse, and neglect that bring youth to UMYH.

High school graduates or those with an HSE are more likely to be employed, less likely to commit crime, and have a longer life expectancy than those who do not achieve this educational milestone. According to the Grow SAVI database, the poverty rate in Vanderburgh County for those without a high school diploma is 25.6%, while it is 15.2% for those who have achieved a high school diploma or equivalency but no further education.

At UMYH, we strive to help our kids see that education is more than just components of the classical institution that may be easy to imagine; it is a lifelong process of personal growth and evolution. We help youth earn their high school equivalency while helping them see their diploma as a beginning rather than a destination. By addressing the root causes of youths’ disengagement and teaching them they hold the power to achieve, we build a lasting foundation for their continued growth extending far beyond their time on our campus.

In 2025, 22 vulnerable young people overcame the odds stacked against them and achieved their high school equivalency. They have taken strides to live up to their full potential.

“Graduating, for me, means everything. It means freedom, that the next chapter of my life is beginning…it’s really exciting.” This powerful sentiment from Libby, one of our youth, showcases our philosophy in action.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 7, 2026
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Uniendo Islas: Tejiendo Futuros
Project Description:

The Uniting Islands: Weaving Futures Project is a community-engaged initiative coordinated by faculty from the Social Work Department at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, as part of the Social Work Methods with Groups course. The project integrates group dynamics, art-based activities, and collaborative games to strengthen socio-emotional learning skills among children and youth while fostering resilience, leadership, and educational aspirations.
The initiative is grounded in a peer mentoring model, where undergraduate social work students facilitate structured group activities with children and adolescents from the Culebra Ecological School. Through these interactions, youth participants gain opportunities to develop communication, emotional regulation, and teamwork skills, while university students strengthen professional competencies in group facilitation, ethical practice, and community engagement.
Over the past 1.5 years, the project has engaged more than 100 children and youth between the ages of 6 and 17 and approximately 50 undergraduate social work students. Activities include socio-emotional learning workshops, cooperative games, and art-based group experiences designed to encourage emotional expression, creativity, and problem-solving.
The project received recognition from the International Association for Social Work with Groups through the SPARC Project, which provided seed funding to support its initial implementation.
The island municipality of Culebra faces persistent structural barriers due to geographic isolation, including limited access to youth development programs, mental health resources, and higher education pathways. This initiative seeks to address these disparities by building meaningful educational and mentoring connections between university students and local youth.
With the requested $10,000 funding for a one-year period, the project will expand its programming and introduce a summer enrichment program, increasing opportunities for youth participation. Funds will support transportation, lodging, meals for participating students and faculty, and the purchase of art supplies and educational materials.
Expected outcomes include improved socio-emotional skills among participating youth, increased leadership and facilitation competencies among university students, and expanded access to enrichment opportunities for children in Culebra. Project impact will be documented through participation records, activity evaluations, and reflective assessments, and a final report will be submitted at the conclusion of the grant period.
