Project Title: High School Equivalency for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:

The Day Education Program supports youth as they work to achieve their high school equivalency (HSE) and better their lives. Youth in our programs are referred through the Department of Child Services or Juvenile Justice system.

Without a high school diploma or equivalency, it is difficult to earn enough money to break the cycles of poverty, abuse, and neglect that bring youth to UMYH.

High school graduates or those with an HSE are more likely to be employed, less likely to commit crime, and have a longer life expectancy than those who do not achieve this educational milestone. According to the Grow SAVI database, the poverty rate in Vanderburgh County for those without a high school diploma is 25.6%, while it is 15.2% for those who have achieved a high school diploma or equivalency but no further education.

At UMYH, we strive to help our kids see that education is more than just components of the classical institution that may be easy to imagine; it is a lifelong process of personal growth and evolution. We help youth earn their high school equivalency while helping them see their diploma as a beginning rather than a destination. By addressing the root causes of youths’ disengagement and teaching them they hold the power to achieve, we build a lasting foundation for their continued growth extending far beyond their time on our campus.

In 2025, 22 vulnerable young people overcame the odds stacked against them and achieved their high school equivalency. They have taken strides to live up to their full potential.

“Graduating, for me, means everything. It means freedom, that the next chapter of my life is beginning…it’s really exciting.” This powerful sentiment from Libby, one of our youth, showcases our philosophy in action.
