Project Title: College Access for Latinx Students
Project Description:

SLI’s mission is to support Latino/a/x high school students with college access through rigorous academic challenge, leadership development, scholarships, and supportive mentorships.

The original SLI was founded by Peter Iver Kaufman and others in 2001 at UNC Chapel Hill. In 2008 Kaufman brought SLI to the University of Richmond, Virginia, and later to the Shenandoah Valley, where this organization was incorporated in 2012 and then achieved 501(c)(3) status.

SLI is a collaboration with high school and university faculty, staff, and students to offer out-of-school, college access programs for high school students in Harrisonburg, Richmond, and Winchester. With private support from its donors, SLI creates college scholarships, tech grants, and other financial assistance opportunities for SLI scholars and alumni. Since 2012 SLI has served 223 scholars (67 current and 156 alumni) and awarded students more than $917,300. SLI alumni have attended 29 colleges and universities.

As SLI alumni have shared:

"SLI allowed me to have a community in which others understand what it is like to be a first-generation student. They also provided me with the support and information necessary to move forward as a student with no previous ties to any college. They guided me through the process of understanding how to apply, breaking down the FAFSA application, and even allowed us to spend time in person at college campuses in order to understand what we were planning on doing and to make connections with potential professors."

"SLI prepared me for college through its Early College lectures which helped me gain the necessary discussion skills for my discussion sections in college. The Early College experience also allowed me to observe college classes in high school and see how they compared to high school."

Total Project Budget: $333,935

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Additional funding is being cultivated through ongoing development efforts to garner support from the SLI Community of Support (vasli.org/community) through grants, donations, event sponsorships, and more.

Project Title: Ovation Strings Program
Project Description:

The Ovation Strings Program, started in May 2018 in Peekskill, New York, and continuing to this day, is a free after-school strings program for underprivileged elementary- and middle-school-aged children to learn to play the violin for one hour per week throughout the year. The majority of our students have never held an instrument before and are not old enough to participate in their school district’s instrumental music program. With a maximum class size of 10, the program’s group setting promotes healthy collegial socialization and achieves the benefits of music education for the developing brain. The environment helps students build confidence, and they are encouraged to support their peers constructively. The teachers recruited for the "Ovation Strings" program have experience customizing class content for different age groups and skill levels.

One distinctive component of the "Ovation Strings" program is that our students perform on major stages with their teachers in concerts produced by Daisy Jopling Foundation. DJF has been producing at least one major concert each year in Peekskill, NY, and several concerts in smaller venues in communities with low-income enclaves. At least 20% of the theater tickets are distributed to disenfranchised students and families through public schools and community-based organizations. Throughout the year, students also perform at school events and for civic and faith-based organizations, building confidence through these experiences. Another distinctive feature of the "Ovation Strings" program is its outreach to other community-based music education and public school music programs to support them in applying our model to expand music education to serve any and every child, especially those who are historically marginalized, regardless of their socioeconomic status and ability to pay for lessons. We are seeking funding to expand the program to New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Mt. Vernon, the three poorest cities in Westchester County.

Project Title: Rockwood Youth Baseball League
Project Description:

The Rockwood Youth Baseball League is a community-based youth sports program created by the Rockwood Youth Foundation to remove financial, cultural, and access barriers that prevent children and families from participating in organized baseball in the Rockwood community of Portland, Oregon.

The League provides free or low-cost registration, uniforms, equipment, and family support so that youth, many of whom are playing organized baseball for the first time, can safely and confidently participate. The program emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and family engagement while creating welcoming, values-driven team environments for children ages 6–12.

During the most recent season, more than 30 families participated, forming two teams (ages 6–9 and 9–12). Families and players practiced and played at community parks including Peninsula Park, Overlook Park, and Albina Park, introducing many families to safe, positive outdoor recreation spaces for the first time.

Beyond baseball instruction, the League connects families to academic advancement support and youth well-being resources, strengthening both on-field and off-field outcomes. The program is designed to foster healthy activity, improve confidence, build leadership skills, and strengthen family participation in community life.

By establishing a dedicated, neighborhood-based youth baseball league, Rockwood Youth Baseball League expands equitable access to sports, creates consistent opportunities for play and mentorship, and builds a sustainable pipeline for year-round youth development in one of the most diverse and under-resourced communities in East Multnomah County.
