Project Title: Investing in Youth with a Zero Chance to Achieve Swim Literacy
Project Description:

This project called Water Babies is a source of good health and education practices, cradle to grave, but focuses on infants. Specifically, it will target newborns at the hospital before they leave to educate their families on the importance of water activities with take home materials. Financial assistance information will be included in the materials also. Water Babies lessons are important for developing early swimming skills, physical and cognitive developmental, improve memory capacity, builds confidence, strengthen parent and child bonds, etc. In essence,, Water Babies lessons offer a holistic approach to a child’s development, combining water safety, physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and emotional well-being. Research has also shown that a child put in water at an early age can be 20 months advanced for reading readiness and have advanced math skills in junior high (Griffith University of Queensland). Also, 11 months ahead in oral expression; 17 months ahead in story recall and 20 months ahead for understanding directions.

Our program educates all, but 100% of the money is used to pay for lessons and most benefit from 2 sessions of lesson per year from 6 months to 2 years of age.

We target children on the spectrum and work with the Head Start programs in our areas of service. Reaching the families at birth is vital to start to break the cycle of 50% of the families that have parents and grandparents that never learned to swim. We serve cradle to grave, but this program will target new births only.

One session costs $95 and we want to try and get 6 sessions in before the child would be able to do group lessons the would advance their swimming skills for prevention of drowning and promote physical growth and wellness for life.

The Foundation is all pro bono with no office or administrative costs led by retired teachers in their 70s/80s.

This year marks a major milestone—the 25th anniversary of Advocates for Youth’s Youth Activist Institute, which will take place September 4–8, 2025, in Washington, DC, at the Yours Truly Hotel. We invite Hermanowski Foundation to sponsor this landmark event. This isn’t just an anniversary—it’s a moment of urgency and opportunity. Young people (14-21) today are on the frontlines of the most critical fights of our time: for reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, immigration equity, and comprehensive education. These battles are deeply interconnected, and they require bold, strategic, and united youth leadership.

Project Title: The Gilmore Piano Labs
Project Description:

Education and Community Engagement are identified as one of The Gilmore’s five Core Values. Piano Labs was created from The Gilmore’s strong belief that music education should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford private lessons. Beyond enjoyment, musical opportunities provide a wide range of academic and psychological benefits. Music and small group instruction can also positively impact social emotional learning and disrupt negative behaviors in school. Reaching children who might not otherwise have access to these life-enhancing experiences is a top priority for the organization, and has been for decades, leading to a music education program that is among the strongest and most extensive in the region, reaching thousands of people for more than 27 years. All sites are selected because their populations represent historically excluded groups.

The Piano Labs provide in-school music instruction for students from fall to summer. Instructors lead twice weekly 30-minute group piano lessons for students from three elementary schools (grades 2-5); the Young Adult Program; and the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. Additional programs, in collaboration with other nonprofits serving children and families, are produced during the summer months.

Launched for the 2024-25 school year was a new Labs site. Lincoln Elementary School for International Studies was identified by Kalamazoo Public Schools as a priority site due to the socioeconomic makeup of its historically redlined neighborhood; and a KPS program that helps 150 immigrant students transition into new lives. 96% of its students come from historically excluded groups.

Demand for classes exceeded the available spots from the start. More teachers are needed, but the program is hampered by teachers’ ability to earn more from private lessons than what they can earn through the Labs. The Gilmore is motivated to raise more funds to meet this challenge.

Project Title: Launching Little Learners: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Through Access to Quality Childcare
Project Description:

Caterpillar Clubhouse (CCH) provides high-quality early childhood education in Bowie, MD, for children aged 6 weeks to pre-K. We understand that affordable childcare is often a significant barrier for families, hindering parents, especially mothers, from working or pursuing education, thus perpetuating a cycle of poverty. This project aims to break that cycle with $2,500 in childcare scholarships.

With funding from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, 10 families will receive $250 per child towards their CCH childcare costs. This direct financial assistance empowers parents to work or pursue education, increasing their earning potential and improving family economic stability. By easing the burden of childcare costs, we enable parents to invest in their futures and create better lives for their children.

These scholarships offer a multifaceted impact:

Economic Empowerment: Parents gain financial independence, contributing to family well-being.
Education: Parents can pursue further education or training for better job opportunities.
Child Development: Children benefit from consistent, high-quality early education at CCH, promoting their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
Family Well-being: Financial stability and access to childcare reduce family stress.
Investing in affordable childcare is investing in the future. These scholarships support children’s development and empower families to break the poverty cycle, aligning perfectly with the Hermanowski Foundation’s mission of transforming young lives by providing tools for success.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 08/06/25
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Closing the Gap: DJ’s Care Closet for a Memphis Title I School
Project Description:

The Dennis Price Jr. Foundation seeks support from the Hermanowski Foundation to launch a new DJ’s Care Closet in a high-need Title I school in Memphis, Tennessee. DJ’s Care Closet is more than just a supply cabinet—it is a thoughtfully designed, boutique-style “store” located within a school, where students experiencing poverty, housing insecurity, or family crisis can discreetly access essential items they need to attend school with confidence and dignity.

Each Care Closet is stocked with brand-new clothing, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, undergarments, and seasonal gear—resources too often out of reach for students in underserved communities. By removing these barriers, DJ’s Care Closet supports attendance, academic focus, and overall student well-being. Students are referred by counselors, teachers, or administrators and can “shop” in a welcoming, judgment-free environment that restores a sense of agency and normalcy during difficult times.

This $10,000 project will nearly fully fund the launch of one new DJ’s Care Closet, covering startup supplies, shelving and racks, signage, inventory, and initial stocking. It will serve an estimated 200–500 students in its first year alone, with the potential to grow annually. This initiative is grounded in our broader mission to eliminate preventable heart-related deaths by uplifting youth and supporting the whole child—body, mind, and spirit.

At the Dennis Price Jr. Foundation, we believe that every child deserves a fair chance to thrive. DJ’s Care Closet honors Dennis’s legacy of leadership and compassion by ensuring students are not held back by circumstances beyond their control. With your support, we can bring hope, comfort, and essential care to a Memphis school community that needs it most. Together, we can help students feel seen, supported, and ready to succeed—one Care Closet at a time.

Total Project Budget: $175,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The $175,000 budget reflects a three-year expansion plan to launch DJ’s Care Closets in seven additional Title I schools across Memphis by 2028. This investment will allow us to reach hundreds more students with the essentials they need to attend school with dignity, confidence, and stability. We are actively pursuing additional funding to support this expansion and ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. While applying for grants is a new endeavor for our young organization, we are already building strong momentum. We received a $55,000 grant from the John Dustin Buckman Charitable Trust and have raised $27,336.72 from individual donors who believe deeply in our mission for the first three Care Closets. Generous in-kind donations valued at $41,922 from community partners like Ampro and TEKsystems have also helped us successfully launch our first three DJ’s Care Closets. These early investments reflect growing community and philanthropic support—and a shared belief in our vision to remove barriers to education and well-being for students in Memphis.
