Project Title: Bridging the Future: STEM Initiative
Project Description:

Battle Creek Academy (BCA) is launching the Bridging the Future: STEM Initiative, a transformative program aimed at expanding access to quality STEM education for students in grades K -12. As one of Michigan’s top-ranked private schools and the flagship institution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, BCA is positioned to address the growing demand for hands-on, future-focused learning. This initiative responds to a critical gap: Only 38% of students in the Battle Creek area currently have access to comprehensive STEM programming.
This program will introduce hands-on, project-based STEM learning across all grade levels, anchored by the creation of a fully equipped maker space. The maker space will feature 3D printers, robotics kits, coding platforms, electronics stations, and collaborative work areas. These tools will support interdisciplinary projects that emphasize real-world problem-solving, creative thinking, and teamwork. Supported by a dedicated STEM coordinator, the program will foster multidisciplinary connections across subjects, embedding critical thinking, communication, and innovation into the daily learning process.
In addition to enhancing academic outcomes, the initiative aims to counter the long-term impacts of learning loss in science and math. By providing early exposure to STEM, BCA will strengthen foundational skills and build pathways to high-demand careers in technology, engineering, and science—fields projected to grow faster than most others in the coming decade. The program aligns with the school’s mission to nurture spiritual, academic, physical, and social growth, preparing students not only for college and careers but for lives of service and leadership.
With a commitment to training, updated technology infrastructure, and project-based learning, this initiative will position BCA students to thrive in a workforce where STEM skills are in high demand. This program is more than an academic upgrade—it’s a bold step toward empowering every student to imagine, create, and lead in an increasingly complex and technology-driven world.

Project Title: Raising Hands Literacy Project
Project Description:

Raising Hands Literacy Project, in partnership with Dyslexic Edge, is launching a multi-state initiative that combines structured literacy instruction with hands-on STEM learning to close the literacy gap for underserved students. This innovative program addresses two urgent needs: the lack of effective reading intervention for students with dyslexia and the inequitable access to early STEM education in low-income communities.

With support from this grant, we will train and certify 10 student teachers in the Orton-Gillingham method, a research-backed approach recognized for its effectiveness in teaching struggling readers. Each trainee will complete 42 hours of coursework and a 50-hour supervised practicum, during which they will deliver free, individualized reading and STEM-integrated tutoring to a low-income student.

Incorporating STEM activities into literacy instruction not only reinforces reading comprehension and vocabulary but also builds confidence, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving skills. Students will engage in projects such as circuit-building, design challenges, and reading technical texts—making literacy meaningful, exciting, and future-focused.

This dual-impact model strengthens teacher preparedness while expanding access to high-quality, interdisciplinary academic support for students who need it most. By blending literacy and STEM instruction, the program prepares young learners for both academic achievement and long-term success in an increasingly tech-driven world.

Project Title: From Hunger To Hope
Project Description:

From Hunger to Hope is a targeted initiative by HopeFor Learning designed to address food insecurity among students in Title 1 elementary schools across Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico. Many of these students rely on school-provided meals during the week and face food shortages on weekends and during school breaks. This instability at home often results in poor academic performance, chronic absenteeism, behavioral issues, and a decline in physical and emotional well-being.

The goal of From Hunger to Hope is to provide consistent access to nutritious, shelf-stable food for children identified by school counselors and Communities in Schools site coordinators as food-insecure. Once identified, we collaborate with trusted community partners like Feedmore, Village Green RVA, and local school staff to coordinate food acquisition, packaging, and discreet weekly distribution to children and families in need.

Each food kit contains enough items to support students through the weekend and includes easy-to-prepare meals, snacks, and beverages. Volunteers, including our primary team of 5, help manage school-level distribution to ensure students receive the appropriate quantity based on their needs.

Through this initiative, we aim to directly impact students’ health and readiness to learn. Removing the stress of hunger at home allows children to better focus in school, boosts attendance, and improves behavior and emotional stability.

With continued support, From Hunger to Hope will reach more students each year, filling a critical gap in care for those who would otherwise go without. A grant would help us expand our reach, cover the rising cost of food and supplies, and ensure that no child in our community has to face the weekend hungry.

Project Title: Anchored Hope Home Preparation: Creating a Safe Space for Healing
Project Description:

Anchored Hope is committed to providing a safe, supportive transitional home for young women, ages 18-24, who have aged out of foster care. For many, this will be their first time having a space to call their own—a private room where they can feel secure, valued, and empowered. However, the house requires significant improvements to ensure it meets safety, comfort, and livability standards.

We are seeking financial support to complete essential remodeling changes to make this house a true home. Key improvements include:

Painting to freshen the interior and create a welcoming atmosphere.

A new fence to ensure privacy and security for the residents.

Updated kitchen appliances to provide functional and modern cooking facilities.

A retaining wall in the driveway, as the current setup is unsafe for residents and visitors.

Pest control to eliminate any current infestations and create a clean, healthy environment.

New kitchen flooring to improve both safety and aesthetics.

These renovations are critical in transforming the space from a shelter into a place of comfort and stability, where young women can thrive. With your support, we can prepare each room to offer a sense of independence and belonging. Our goal is for the home to not just meet basic needs, but to provide a nurturing environment that encourages personal growth and success for these young women. Your financial assistance will help create the safe haven they deserve, making a lasting impact on their futures.

Project Title: Carnegie Hall
Project Description:

Dear Grant Committee,
My name is Elizabeth Cohn, and I am the Choir Director and Music Teacher at Echo Horizon School. We serve PK-6th grade students, many of whom are part of the deaf and hard of hearing population, as well as students with special needs.
Two years ago, I founded a choir, The Echo Singers, that currently includes 28 singers, six of whom are deaf and wear cochlear implants. Our choir represents 4th-6th grade students from diverse backgrounds, including a variety of races, religions, and cultures. We are an inclusive and diverse group that sings in multiple languages and across various genres.
In May 2024, we entered a choral competition and earned a national gold ranking. After receiving this prestigious honor, we were invited to submit a recording to perform at Carnegie Hall. We submitted our recording and were accepted!
The Echo Singers are invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in April 2026, marking a historic milestone for our school and the deaf and hard of hearing community. We are tremendously grateful for this opportunity and are seeking your support to help us achieve this goal. We are applying for this grant because we believe it aligns with our mission. Thank you for your consideration and support in helping us get to Carnegie Hall!
