Project Title: Raising Hands Literacy Project
Project Description:
Raising Hands Literacy Project, in partnership with Dyslexic Edge, is launching a multi-state initiative that combines structured literacy instruction with hands-on STEM learning to close the literacy gap for underserved students. This innovative program addresses two urgent needs: the lack of effective reading intervention for students with dyslexia and the inequitable access to early STEM education in low-income communities.
With support from this grant, we will train and certify 10 student teachers in the Orton-Gillingham method, a research-backed approach recognized for its effectiveness in teaching struggling readers. Each trainee will complete 42 hours of coursework and a 50-hour supervised practicum, during which they will deliver free, individualized reading and STEM-integrated tutoring to a low-income student.
Incorporating STEM activities into literacy instruction not only reinforces reading comprehension and vocabulary but also builds confidence, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving skills. Students will engage in projects such as circuit-building, design challenges, and reading technical texts—making literacy meaningful, exciting, and future-focused.
This dual-impact model strengthens teacher preparedness while expanding access to high-quality, interdisciplinary academic support for students who need it most. By blending literacy and STEM instruction, the program prepares young learners for both academic achievement and long-term success in an increasingly tech-driven world.
