Project Title: From Hunger To Hope
Project Description:
From Hunger to Hope is a targeted initiative by HopeFor Learning designed to address food insecurity among students in Title 1 elementary schools across Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico. Many of these students rely on school-provided meals during the week and face food shortages on weekends and during school breaks. This instability at home often results in poor academic performance, chronic absenteeism, behavioral issues, and a decline in physical and emotional well-being.
The goal of From Hunger to Hope is to provide consistent access to nutritious, shelf-stable food for children identified by school counselors and Communities in Schools site coordinators as food-insecure. Once identified, we collaborate with trusted community partners like Feedmore, Village Green RVA, and local school staff to coordinate food acquisition, packaging, and discreet weekly distribution to children and families in need.
Each food kit contains enough items to support students through the weekend and includes easy-to-prepare meals, snacks, and beverages. Volunteers, including our primary team of 5, help manage school-level distribution to ensure students receive the appropriate quantity based on their needs.
Through this initiative, we aim to directly impact students’ health and readiness to learn. Removing the stress of hunger at home allows children to better focus in school, boosts attendance, and improves behavior and emotional stability.
With continued support, From Hunger to Hope will reach more students each year, filling a critical gap in care for those who would otherwise go without. A grant would help us expand our reach, cover the rising cost of food and supplies, and ensure that no child in our community has to face the weekend hungry.
