Project Title: Soundscapes Daily After-School Music Education Programs
Project Description:

Soundscapes uses music to instill transformative life skills in underserved youth from under-resourced communities. Since 2009, we have served over 2,000 students, prioritizing those from underserved communities. Our student demographic is diverse: 54% African American, 21% White, 15% Hispanic/Latino, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 8% multiracial. Since over 80% of our students come from low-income households, all programs are offered to families at no or low cost.

Soundscapes programs include three daily after-school music programs, community youth ensembles, summer camps, and a youth employment program. The purpose of this request is to support the three daily after-school programs that are intentionally located in Title I elementary schools, which are identified as having a high population of low-income students. Soundscapes’ daily after-school programs include two hours of free after-school care, high-quality music instruction, a hot meal, the instrument and other supplies needed, and transportation home after the program.

These components are critical for families affected by poverty and are made accessible at no cost to program participants. Soundscapes’ daily after-school programs are serving 200 students this school year, with more than 80% coming from low- to moderate-income households.
Soundscapes has a measurable impact on students. Participants show a 40% decrease in absences, fewer behavioral referrals, and a rise in school club participation from about two-thirds of students in the general population to 95% among Soundscapes students. High school students gain leadership experience as mentors and teaching assistants, and young adults in our youth employment program develop essential job skills while contributing to their community as educators and performers.
We are committed to ensuring all young people have access to high-quality music education and the tools they need to thrive. With your support, we can sustain and expand our programs, empowering more students to achieve their full potential.

Project Title: Support for Abused, Neglected & Homeless Youth
Project Description:

Youth Haven seeks funding to expand its trauma-informed, holistic mental health services for abused, neglected, and homeless children and teens, ages 6 to 21, ensuring they have the necessary tools to heal, grow, and achieve their full potential. As the only emergency and residential shelter for foster youth in Southwest Florida, and the only shelter in Collier County specifically for homeless teens, Youth Haven provides a safe, structured, and healing-focused therapeutic campus where children and teens can begin their journey toward a brighter, better future.

Our trauma-informed care model integrates therapeutic services, educational support, life skills training, and mentorship to meet the complex needs of our residents. Our licensed therapist uses comprehensive assessments to measure each resident’s daily functioning, emotional well-being, self-sufficiency, and academic progress. Our expertise in trauma-informed care is reinforced by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) assessments, which highlight the severe trauma faced by our youth: clients average 7.2 out of 10 ACEs. Without intervention, these youth are at high risk for long-term instability, health challenges, and limited opportunities.

With beds for up to 74 youth at a given time on our 18.5-acre therapeutic campus, and supporting an average of 150 unduplicated clients annually, Youth Haven provides around-the-clock specialized care in a home-like environment, counseling to begin their healing process, educational support, and a robust enrichment program.

Through individualized treatment plans, life skills classes, and mentorship, we help youth develop resilience, build healthy relationships, and acquire the tools needed for long-term success. By enhancing therapeutic care and expanding mental health services, we aim to break the cycle of trauma and empower youth, ensuring that vulnerable youth not only heal from their past experiences but also have the opportunity to realize a stable and hopeful future.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: General Operations
Project Description:

Northland Early Education Center (NEEC) provides early education and therapy services for children who have special needs as well as early education for children who have typical needs, in a fully inclusive classroom environment in order for them to reach their full potential.
Northland Early Education Center serves children from birth through 5 years old in a fully inclusive early education classroom environment. All classrooms have a lead teacher with a bachelor’s degree or working toward a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, special education, or a related field and at least two assistant teachers. NEEC also offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, special instruction, and applied behavioral analysis to qualifying children. Additionally, NEEC serves children K-5th grade with an IEP or 504 plan through before and after care and summer care. Annually NEEC serves about 300 children through early education, therapeutic intervention services, and/or before and after care.
NEEC holds accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)
Northland Early Education Center runs on a $3.3 million annual budget. Due to the Clay Count Children’s Service Board deciding to move toward supporting school district initiatives to serve children through mental health programs and NEEC’s denial of funding for 2025, we are facing a budget deficit of $215,000 for 2025. This deficit is to be made up through grants and additional fundraising efforts. Believing that NEEC’s mission aligns with the Hermanowski Foundation’s goal to support organizations focused on education and health and welfare services, I respectfully request that the Hermanowski Foundation consider funding Northland Early Education Center’s general operations at $5,000.

Project Title: The Mint Museum’s Grier Heights Community Youth Arts Program
Project Description:

The Grier Heights Community Youth Arts Program, The Mint Museum’s flagship outreach initiative, engages students through multi-disciplinary art-making, cultural literacy, and teen health initiatives. The goal of this critical 21-year program is to use the arts as a tool to improve school performance and build self-awareness, life-skills, and community. The program integrates many different subject areas along with field trips to local arts and culture institutions resulting in improved academic performance, leadership skills, self-esteem, and community engagement, helping these at-risk youth transition into middle school, graduate from high school, and lead successful lives. The challenges and needs of youth in the low-income, marginalized Grier Heights community are numerous. Many of the challenges are common to low-income communities, including juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, school dropout, and teenage pregnancy. Structured programs aimed at engaging pre-teens and teens are critical to help youth in this neighborhood to identify and actualize their talents, build life and leadership skills that help them overcome challenges, and achieve improved school performance and long-term success. The Grier Heights program comprises weekly after school sessions held alternately at the Mint and Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, from September-May/June annually. Participants attend field trips to local arts and culture institutions, and participate in engaging educational activities that increase their knowledge of and appreciation for literature, history, art, and other areas. Key programmatic outcomes include: prepare students to succeed in their school environment; produce more educated and informed individuals; equip students with confidence and self-esteem by teaching the skills necessary to succeed in life; broaden their knowledge of arts and different cultures; and discover leaders and learn servant/community leadership skills.

Project Title: WaterStrong programs in water safety and water stewardship
Project Description:

Founded in 2016, WaterStrong is a 501(c)(3) non-profit in Portland, Oregon with the mission to end drowning and promote safer, cleaner waters. WaterStrong is Candid Gold certified and a 1% For the Planet partner organization.

With over 370,000 deaths every year, drowning is the third leading cause of injury death among children under 14. The US loses over 3,500 children every year to drowning, and Oregon suffers a 26% higher rate than the national average with almost all drowning deaths occurring in natural bodies of water. At the same time, we are facing a climate change emergency with severe storms, overstressed groundwater, harmful algal blooms, and toxic runoff impairing our rivers and lakes.

WaterStrong provides EcoSwim programs in essential water safety and environmental education, focusing on reaching underserved families. We deliver water safety, swimming, CPR training, and environmental education around water, to empower youth to become future caretakers of the water, confident swimmers, and capable first responders.

WaterStrong programs grow every year. In 2024, WaterStrong conducted 34 events, distributed 1,650 lifejackets, engaged 300 volunteers, and certified 15 new CPR instructors including 11 women of color and 2 mother-daughter pairs. In 2025-2026, WaterStrong will double our impact with bi-weekly EcoSwim clinics, summer day camps, community CPR classes, and lifejacket distribution/water safety education events.
If awarded, a grant from the Hermanowski Foundation will be used to support the ongoing delivery of EcoSwim clinics for children ages 5-14 and CPR and lifeguard trainings for middle and high school students.
