Project Title: Comprehensive Services for Child Victims of Sexual Assault
Project Description:

Youth are disproportionately impacted by sexual violence. 19% of King County’s total population is under the age of 18. However, despite making up less than one-fifth of the total population, almost half of KCSARC’s clients are children and teenagers (47%). Studies suggest that sexual victimization in childhood or adolescence increases the likelihood of sexual revictimization in adulthood by two to 13.7 times. Survivors who have experienced recurrent victimization are more likely to report psychological distress, suicidality, and self-injury than those who have never experienced sexual victimization or have experienced only one form of victimization.

The vulnerabilities of children and teenagers that open them up to an increased risk of violence also make it more difficult to seek support and services. Youth have specific concerns and barriers that reduce the likelihood that they will report their assault or abuse and seek services. Oftentimes, youth may not understand that they have been assaulted or abused.

Other barriers include fears of retaliation, the possibility of losing housing or other needs if the perpetrator is a member of their household, as well as feelings of shame and guilt. This underscores the need for early intervention services and prevention education to limit the impacts of this violence and to prevent instances of victimization altogether.

KCSARC serves clients through a comprehensive roster of free services in Spanish and English, including a 24-hour resource and crisis line, trauma-specific therapy, general, medical, and legal advocacy, and sexual violence prevention education. KCSARC’s wraparound menu of services provides impactful primary and secondary intervention. Recovery is possible – early acknowledgement, belief, and trauma-informed responses to adverse childhood experiences promote healing. Children are resilient, and KCSARC’s services are a vital service to the community, providing more than 2,000 children each year with access to early intervention and education.

Project Title: Catalyzing High Quality Education in Milwaukee Schools
Project Description:

By 2035, City Forward Collective (CFC) will place 15,000 more Milwaukee students on the path to proficiency through access to high-quality school seats. This ambitious goal represents our commitment to transforming Milwaukee’s educational landscape to improve academic outcomes and prepare students for thriving and productive lives.

Milwaukee stands at a critical crossroads. The stark reality facing our city’s students demands immediate action: 79% of Milwaukee students are not performing at grade level, and 3 in 10 schools are chronically underperforming. This is not merely a statistic – it represents tens of thousands of young lives being denied the opportunity to reach their full potential.

CFC is a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring high-quality school options for all Milwaukee students. We achieve this work through four pillars: Inform, Engage, Advocate and Catalyze.

We Inform: We offer insightful and incisive policy and data analysis about Milwaukee’s K-12 ecosystem and proactively identify evidence-based solutions to challenges faced by Milwaukee’s students and schools.

We Engage: We regularly convene Collaboratives to connect and mobilize a diverse and powerful coalition of changemakers who care deeply about our children’s academics and futures: parents/families, school executives, teachers and principals, and civic and community leaders.

We Advocate: We boldly support local and state-level policies that create the conditions for excellent Milwaukee schools to thrive.

We Catalyze: We partner with and fund schools to address the challenges of growing excellent schools, including student recruitment, sourcing diverse talent, securing funding, and ensuring safe, high-quality learning environments for all students.

City Forward Collective (CFC) is a team of passionate educators and advocates working to provide a great school for all Milwaukee children whether they attend a Milwaukee Public School, an independent public charter school, or a private school accepting publicly funded tuition vouchers. We bring together parents, educators, board members, elected officials, and other community members to advance our mission.

Today’s Date: March 25, 2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: PAVE (Providing Access to Vaccinations for Everyone) Immunization
Project Description:

Nova ScriptsCentral’s (NSC) PAVE Immunization program offers free immunizations and other clinical services to help children access affordable healthcare necessary for school entry. As most children served within the program are without insurance or are Medicaid beneficiaries, the services provided are crucial in helping these underserved patients access the healthcare required by the school district. NSC serves 220 students annually and has provided over 2,500 immunizations to more than 1,200 students since 2016. The organization has directly supported communities in Fairfax County and, with additional funding, is committed to expanding its efforts to assist larger populations within the community. Currently, in Prince William County, local schools have sought NSC’s assistance in providing immunizations for adolescents within the region, particularly refugee children from Afghanistan who are in desperate need of affordable healthcare services. Many children cannot obtain proper education through the school system without access to this care. NSC is committed to ensuring no child is excluded from their right to education due to improper healthcare accessibility. In collaboration with the local health system, local nurses will provide physical assessments while NSC will oversee the immunization process for patients. A multilingual team is in place to provide culturally competent healthcare services, ensuring a safe space for clients to receive care and helping to dismantle logistical barriers that could affect healthcare needs. However, further funding is required to ensure the proper utilization of staff support is supplied to the clinics for immunization provision. Additionally, NSC will continue its giveaways for the students receiving immunizations, as the gifts have proven to increase comfort and ease the minds of many children receiving upwards of eight vaccines within a clinic visit. As receiving immunizations can be stressful for many children, NSC ensures all patients receive compassionate, patient-centered care and feel secure while receiving immunization services.

Potential project sources include the Prince William County Public Schools, the Prince William Global Welcome Center, and the Sentara Hospital System, which will collaborate with NSC to significantly impact larger student populations.

Project Title: Expand Students’ Social-Emotional Education with Storytelling Residencies
Project Description:

NYC Kids Project seeks to create an inclusive society where all people are valued for who they are. We partner with schools across New York City, focusing on Title 1 schools, using puppetry and storytelling to create immersive experiences for young children through which they can practice empathy, inclusion and kindness.

Our interactive experiences and classroom programs use puppets, storytelling, and facilitated dialogue to help children develop critical social-emotional skills, most notably empathy and social awareness. Our programs are intentionally designed to make children feel comfortable asking questions and processing ideas that they might otherwise not know when or how to articulate and to provide open-ended answers to those questions that they can continue to discuss in their classrooms and with their families.

We currently have three school program offerings: Making Friends for Pre-K through 1st Grade, the Puppet Show for 2nd through 5th Grade and Storytelling Residencies. Our most recently added program, Storytelling Residencies include multi-week engagements for students in grades 2 through 5 combining empathy and social awareness, puppetry creation, and creative and language arts opportunities including improvisation, storytelling, and creative writing. Residencies explore issues that begin to surface as children age, such as bias, bullying, and gender equity, and position students to create their own stories.

We are requesting a grant from the Hermanowski Foundation in the amount of $3,000.00 to enable us to bring our Storytelling Residencies to more students in 2025-2026. The grant will be used to provide a Storytelling Residency free of charge to a school that cannot otherwise afford our services. Your support will help our city’s children, many of whom missed critical social development windows because of the pandemic, build their socio-emotional skills so that they can become active, engaged learners as well as contributors to a healthy, thriving community.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/25/25
Requested Amount: 10,000.00

Project Title: Desks for Success
Project Description:

Boca Raton Achievement Center, BRAC, is a non-profit, private specialized school for students with autism and other developmental and learning disabilities, a very underserved and vulnerable population. These students are unable to succeed in traditional school settings. Many have years of unacceptable experiences and suffer with regression of skills and little or no learning. BRAC provides a unique curriculum tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. At BRAC, we find how our students learn, teach them as individuals and allow them to grow at their own pace. Additionally, BRAC offers social, emotional and behavioral support, teaching essential life skills and vocational training. BRAC supports the greater community by training and preparing students for sustainable employment. We partner with local businesses and organizations to create enrichment opportunities for our students in athletics, fine art and other extracurricular activities.

In august 2022, BRAC opened doors with just the bare minimum. We relied on donations of used furniture, old computers, and any supplies we could acquire, resulting in mismatched tables and chairs not well suited for classroom instruction.

Within the first two years, our enrollment doubled, serving over 30 students. Without adequate seating, this growth in enrollment created a crowded setting: students sitting too close to each other with less than adequate work space, along with safety issues with students tripping over chairs they forget to push in.

BRAC is now preparing to relocate into more suitable space. Our new location will provide beautiful classrooms with natural sunlight; open spaces for large group and social activities; a complete kitchen where our students will learn cooking, laundry and other essential life skills.

Our goal is to furnish our new space with appropriate school furniture, providing our students with individual student desks, thus creating a modernized learning environment.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/25/2025
Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: Food Security Program
Project Description:

On behalf of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD), I am respectfully requesting $10,000 in grant funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to purchase food for our weekly food pantry that serves low and no-income citizens living in the Brooks, Fiskhorn, Warrendale, and Cody Rouge neighborhoods of Detroit, MI. ICD was opened to the public in January 2000. Since then, the ICD has been expanding by working on new projects that benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Some of these efforts include: a full-time school; Saturday school; Sunday school; after-school programming; a Quran program; youth empowerment tools and training; female empowerment workshops; MUHSEN Certified programming; community services (such as neighborhood clean ups, clothing drives, a daily meal line, and a weekly food pantry); mental health programming for youth, adults, and seniors; Ramadan activities; Imam services; and, recreational activities such as a girls’ and boys’ basketball, volleyball, soccer, and summer camps. Each year, ICD serves over 20,000 individuals in metro Detroit, regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or sexual preference.

The mission of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) is to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. In following this mission, ICD has served over 2,500 individuals (or 500 families of 5) with food from our food pantry each week, free of charge, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although we have been able to meet the demand for food security in school children and their families, we have discovered a growing need amongst the unemployed, disabled, and senior populations. In fact, requests for assistance from these citizens have increased three-fold amongst our constituency.

Specifically, through the ICD Food Security Program, we will serve 2,500 unique citizens each week in metro Detroit by providing them with food pantry items, including: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, bread, beans, and pasta. This means that 2,500 unique citizens that are isolated at home, in assisted living, homeless shelters, or on the street, will be served, thus meeting this ever-expanding food insecurity need.
