Project Title: Happy Trails for Kids: Overnight Summer Camp Program 2026
Project Description:

Happy Trails for Kids provides transformative experiences for foster youth in Southern California through overnight camps and year-round programming. For the past 16 years, we have run an Overnight Summer Camp for multiple one-week sessions each summer, which has often been the first introduction foster youth have with Happy Trails’ overall program. Each year, we have rented camp facilities, bringing in our trained staff and programming to complement the traditional camp activities on-site such as swimming, archery, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, stargazing, and more.

Over time, the number of youth interested in attending our camps has grown immensely, with our waitlist far exceeding the number of Campers we could accept. Additionally, the logistics of renting facilities each year presented more challenges. As a long-standing partner of the LA County Department of Child & Family Services, we worked with the Board of Supervisors to identify available space that could be repurposed as a permanent location for our camp program. After 2.5 years, our hard work paid off and in January 2025, the County bequeathed a 135-acre property and facility that had been used by the County as a substance rehabilitation center. We are currently in a public phase of a capital campaign to revitalize and retrofit this property to meet our program needs.

We believe that any youth experiencing foster care should have access to the excitement, adventure, and self-reliance found from being in the great outdoors, as well as the friendships and memories made from a cherished childhood experience like summer camp. Our request through this opportunity is to support our transition from our camp program as it exists today to one that will be a premier model in the country offering access to nature, recreation, and important extracurricular experiences for hundreds more foster youth each year.

Total Project Budget: $1,663,616

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Current fundraising efforts are heavily focused on the capital campaign to renovate and prepare our permanent location in Acton, CA, where we plan to deliver our first summer camp sessions in 2026. Funds secured or being sought from the following will be applied towards our Overnight Summer Camp Program in 2026: County of Los Angeles – committed California Natural Resources Agency: Youth Community Access Grant – pending American Camp Association: Character at Camp Initiative – potential Ralph M. Parsons Foundation McGee Family Foundation Sky Ranch Foundation Clif Family Foundation Kathryn B. McQuade Foundation Robert Nelson Foundation US Bank Foundation The Felix Organization Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation Johnny Carson Foundation Goodwin Family Memorial Trust Tailwinds Foundation

Project Duration: January 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026
Geographical Area Served: One hundred percent of our Campers are experiencing foster care and are considered a vulnerable and low-income population. The vast majority (77%) come from Los Angeles County, with others coming from surrounding counties such as San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Kern, and Ventura.
Age Group To Be Served: Campers range from ages 7-15, with many becoming Junior Leaders through ages 16-17.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/28/25
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: The Creative Collective at The New Children’s Museum
Project Description:

The New Children’s Museum’s The Creative Collective (TCC) is a group of teen artist leaders who design and implement public art projects that address a community need and/or focus on a social justice issue. Participants will be high school students throughout San Diego County, with priority being given to students from the four County zip codes most impacted by: 1) housing insecurity; 2) public transit scores; 3) juvenile arrest rates; and 4) food insecurity & assistance programs. Youth in TCC will hone their abilities to collaborate, take positive risks, and manage artistic projects from inception to completion. TCC members will meet weekly during the school year to explore the world of contemporary art, meet with nationally renowned artists, and learn how to use the arts as a tool to impact their broader communities.

We respectfully request a grant of $10,000 to support a pilot year of TCC starting in fall 2025. The pilot will involve a cohort of 10 students who will shape how projects and social justice issues are selected, what mid-year and culminating events look like, and other program elements, with support from an advisory board of adult community leaders and youth development practitioners.

TCC is one of three Museum initiatives designed to support Creative Youth Development (CYD). As outlined by the Creative Youth Development National Partnership, CYD is “a commitment to supporting young people’s stories, ideas, and dreams through the arts and creative expression” and calls for “all young people to have access to opportunities to develop their creative potential, live richer, fuller lives and develop the life skills they need to become active contributors to their communities.” As we have designed TCC in alignment with CYD principles, this program strongly aligns with the mission of The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation by equipping young people with the creative tools they need to reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $118,610 (includes 15% overhead costs, payroll taxes, and relative staff time)

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We have applied for a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for all three of our Creative Youth Development (CYD)programs, including TCC, in the 2025-2026 year and and expect to be notified in April 2025. We are currently applying for grants from the San Diego County District Attorney’s office and the Robert Lehman Foundation to support TCC. We also plan to apply for CYD funding, which would include support for this initiative, from the California Arts Council in June 2025. All remaining expenses will be covered by individual donors and Museum operating funds.

Project Duration: June 2025-June 2026 (Grant funding will be used for expenses incurred after October 2025).

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Culturally Responsive Counseling for Refugee Youth
Project Description:

Women for Afghan Women’s (WAW) Virginia Community Center (VACC), located in Alexandria, VA, provides essential services to immigrant and refugee women, youth, and families across the DMV region—primarily Afghan newcomers who arrived following the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Many still face trauma, instability, and uncertain immigration statuses, requiring culturally responsive, linguistically appropriate, and trauma-informed support.
Led by Afghan immigrant women, WAW brings firsthand knowledge and deep cultural understanding to its work. In April 2024, in response to the acute mental health needs of Afghan youth, VACC launched a school-based mental health initiative in partnership with Alexandria City High School and Hammond Middle School. These students, aged 13 to 19, have fled violence and upheaval and now face new challenges in the U.S.—cultural adjustment, language barriers, bullying, family tension, financial hardship, and academic pressure—while still carrying the weight of past trauma.
VACC’s Afghan Mental Health Counselor visits both schools twice a week, providing individual and group counseling, peer support, recreational activities, social service referrals, and cultural competency training for school staff. The Counselor’s shared language and cultural background help create a safe space where students feel seen, heard, and supported. One student shared, “I usually don’t feel comfortable talking openly to anyone, but with you, I feel comfortable.”
To date, 67 students across Alexandria City High School and Hammond Middle School have benefited from this initiative. Early outcomes show improvements in attendance, academic performance, behavior, and emotional well-being.
With support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, WAW seeks to continue and expand this vital program to ensure Afghan refugee youth in Alexandria receive the mental health support they need to heal, thrive, and build hopeful futures. We welcome the opportunity to submit a full proposal.

Today’s Date: 3/28/2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: BRYC’s 2025–2026 College Mentor Program
Project Description:

It’s a common misconception that all students who perform well academically will attain college success. This assumption ignores or underestimates resource gaps that cause 17 percent of lower-income students nationally to drop out of college. Those who do persist carry $52,000 in student debt on average. A systemic lack of academic, financial, and personal support during the college application process leaves high-achieving, under-resourced students in Baton Rouge unable to access affordable higher education and become leaders and innovators for Louisiana.

BRYC was founded in 2009 when two high school teachers realized even their brightest students would struggle to realize college success due to a dearth of resources. Today, we provide best-in-class college preparatory services — for free — to over 500 teen “Fellows,” preparing them to enter, persist in, and graduate from college. Closing out our 16th year, BRYC’s 750 alumni have collectively earned $90+ million in scholarships and boast an 83% persistence rate – five times the national average for lower-income students.

BRYC humbly requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our College Mentor Program, which continuously delivers impressive results. Our 15th class (2024) received 616 college acceptances and $5 million in gift aid. One-hundred percent are enrolled in two- or four-year degree programs with affordable payments plans. We ask the Hermanowski Foundation to support this program because, quite simply, it works.

BRYC’s 200 Class of 2026 Senior Fellows will receive:
–1:2 support from dedicated BRYC College Counselors and trained College Mentors
–Robust essay coaching
–College tours/preview visits
–Family financial aid counseling
–Min. $100 direct financial assistance

Senior Fellows focus on submitting the FAFSA; writing and submitting applications; applying for scholarships; and choosing a best-fit school. They cap off senior year with “College 101,” BRYC’s eight-week course focused on the transition to college life.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 28, 2025
Requested Amount: $7,500

Project Title: Mental Health Support & Leadership Development for LGBTQ Youth
Project Description:

We respectfully request your consideration of a grant of $7,500 to support our LGBTQ Mental Health & Leadership Development Project. Funding will be directed to defray the direct costs associated with this program to serve more than 245 youth ages 13 to 20 in Miami-Dade County in one year.

LGBTQ young people face unique challenges that impact their well-being and development. This is not inherent in being LGBTQ, but rather a result of the mistreatment and stigmatization that many LGBTQ young people experience within their families, at school, and in other spaces in the community. These challenges lead to LGBTQ youth in Miami being 4x more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

To support our youth in achieving a full and healthy development, in 2025 we will provide 145 LGBTQ youth and their families with direct Mental Health Services through five core efforts, facilitated by licensed clinicians: Care Coordination, Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Referrals & Navigation, and Family Support Services. As a result, 90% of youth served will increase overall resilient capacities and proactive coping skills. Youth will also decrease overall scores of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Through our Leadership Development initiatives, we will inspire 100 LGBTQ youth to action and deliver 30 youth-centered trainings and educational programs to the community. These efforts provide LGBTQ youth with the opportunity to develop as leaders, critical thinkers, and community activists by learning about LGBTQ history, systems of oppression, community organizing strategies, and political conscious raising on local, state, and policy levels. Each year’s class of leaders also identifies and implements a project specific to their community’s needs. In 2024, our youth leaders choose to focus on the growing violence facing the LGBTQ community, and developed a month-long social media campaign that began here:
