Project Title: The Creative Collective at The New Children’s Museum
Project Description:
The New Children’s Museum’s The Creative Collective (TCC) is a group of teen artist leaders who design and implement public art projects that address a community need and/or focus on a social justice issue. Participants will be high school students throughout San Diego County, with priority being given to students from the four County zip codes most impacted by: 1) housing insecurity; 2) public transit scores; 3) juvenile arrest rates; and 4) food insecurity & assistance programs. Youth in TCC will hone their abilities to collaborate, take positive risks, and manage artistic projects from inception to completion. TCC members will meet weekly during the school year to explore the world of contemporary art, meet with nationally renowned artists, and learn how to use the arts as a tool to impact their broader communities.
We respectfully request a grant of $10,000 to support a pilot year of TCC starting in fall 2025. The pilot will involve a cohort of 10 students who will shape how projects and social justice issues are selected, what mid-year and culminating events look like, and other program elements, with support from an advisory board of adult community leaders and youth development practitioners.
TCC is one of three Museum initiatives designed to support Creative Youth Development (CYD). As outlined by the Creative Youth Development National Partnership, CYD is “a commitment to supporting young people’s stories, ideas, and dreams through the arts and creative expression” and calls for “all young people to have access to opportunities to develop their creative potential, live richer, fuller lives and develop the life skills they need to become active contributors to their communities.” As we have designed TCC in alignment with CYD principles, this program strongly aligns with the mission of The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation by equipping young people with the creative tools they need to reach their full potential.
Total Project Budget: $118,610 (includes 15% overhead costs, payroll taxes, and relative staff time)
Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We have applied for a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for all three of our Creative Youth Development (CYD)programs, including TCC, in the 2025-2026 year and and expect to be notified in April 2025. We are currently applying for grants from the San Diego County District Attorney’s office and the Robert Lehman Foundation to support TCC. We also plan to apply for CYD funding, which would include support for this initiative, from the California Arts Council in June 2025. All remaining expenses will be covered by individual donors and Museum operating funds.
Project Duration: June 2025-June 2026 (Grant funding will be used for expenses incurred after October 2025).
