Project Title: School-Based Health Centers Deliver Access to Care
Project Description:

Rockbridge Area Health Center’s (RAHC) School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) provide accessible, high-quality medical and behavioral health care to students in Rockbridge County Public Schools. By integrating healthcare services directly into the school setting, SBHCs remove barriers such as transportation, cost, and time away from class, ensuring students receive the care they need to thrive academically and personally.

SBHCs offer preventive and acute medical care, chronic disease management, immunizations, wellness exams, and behavioral health services, including counseling and mental health support. These services address the growing need for comprehensive healthcare in schools, especially for underserved and at-risk students. By improving access to care, SBHCs help reduce chronic absenteeism, enhance student well-being, and support academic success.

RAHC’s SBHC initiative is committed to expanding its reach by increasing provider capacity and behavioral health resources. With additional funding, the program will add an advanced practice provider and a behavioral health specialist to serve more students efficiently. This strategic expansion ensures that students receive timely, high-quality care, reducing long-term health disparities and fostering a healthier school community.

Through collaboration with school administrators, families, and community partners, SBHCs create a sustainable model for school-based healthcare, demonstrating the critical role of integrated health services in student success.

Project Title: Building Lifelong Game Changers!
Project Description:

As our organization celebrates nearly two decades of impactful service in the greater San Joaquin Valley, we are committed to empowering youth through the transformative power of life skills and character education, taught through the great game of golf.

Our year-round programming teaches young people not only how to play golf, but how to apply the lessons of the game to everyday life. Golf presents challenges—sand traps, bogeys, and shots that stray off course—that mirror the obstacles we all face in life. We use these moments on the course to instill in our students the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the ability to stay focused on their goals, even in the face of adversity.

In addition to our outdoor programs, we are working toward building a dedicated classroom facility to ensure our youth can continue learning, regardless of weather conditions. The support from this grant will allow us to furnish this classroom with essential elements, including desks, chairs, and the technology necessary to deliver engaging, high-quality lessons throughout the year.

With your support, we can further enhance our students’ learning experience, ensuring they gain not only golf skills but the confidence and character needed to succeed in life. Thank you for considering our request and for investing in the future of the youth we serve.

Project Title: General Operating
Project Description:

The Bender Leadership Academy (TBLA) is a nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh. Our goal is to empower students with disabilities to address bullying, pursue education, and achieve their career goals. We vision a future where every student with a disability reaches their full potential through inclusive, equitable employment opportunities.

The transition into adulthood is challenging for every young person, and this is particularly true for those with disabilities. Part of a successful future includes finding and keeping employment. There’s a dilemma facing youth with disabilities — many experience high unemployment and insufficient opportunities to obtain employment with career growth potential.

Bender Leadership Academy offers a continuum of learning that increases the employability of students with disabilities and gives them a competitive advantage. We provide students with the necessary tools and opportunities to succeed and improve their lives.

Our programs help students build the foundation for a successful transition from school to work by developing self-confidence and both soft and work-based skills that prepare them for employment. Students can go on and earn employer-valued credentials to build a resume. They can apply skills and competencies while engaging in work-based experiences, and advance leadership abilities while engaging with their community. Our programs are aligned with Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for Career Education and Work.

Mental wellness components are woven into our programs, helping build resiliency, coping skills, and healthy relationships. We integrate community engagement into our programs to encourage students to become disability advocates and thoughtful citizens through civic leadership.

Our Mentoring Initiative provides one-on-one mentoring to youth with disabilities. The mentors serve as role models and help mentees by building strong relationships and teaching life skills.

Approximately 800 students are served annually through our programs and Disability Mentoring Day events.

Project Title: The Hope for Tomorrow Scholarship Fund
Project Description:

Lawrence Catholic Academy (LCA), a private Catholic Pre-K through 8th-grade coeducational institution, is dedicated to providing a rigorous, values-driven education to children in one of the region’s most impoverished communities. We respectfully request a $100,000 grant from The Hearst Foundations to support the Hope for Tomorrow Scholarship Fund, which provides essential tuition assistance to at-risk families who seek a safe, high-quality education for their children. Our school serves as a lifeline for students facing economic hardship, offering a nurturing environment that fosters academic excellence, character formation, and leadership development. This grant would directly impact dozens of families who lack the financial means to afford tuition but deeply desire a strong educational foundation for their children.
Statement of Need
At LCA, many families struggle with economic insecurity, and for many children, access to a safe and academically enriching learning environment is limited. Public school options often fail to provide the individualized attention and values-based education that these students need to break the cycle of poverty.
Almost all of our families require financial assistance to afford tuition. Without scholarship support, many of these students would be forced to return to underperforming or unsafe schools, limiting their future prospects. The Hope for Tomorrow Scholarship Fund was established to ensure that no child is turned away due to financial hardship, empowering families to choose an education that prioritizes their child’s well-being, academic success, and moral development.

Project Title: Songwriters Workshop
Project Description:

This project is for the Long Beach Unified School District Adult Community Transition (ACT) program and Easterseals (Carson/Torrance).

The Songwriters Workshop is designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities so that we can have a profound and multifaceted impact on participants, positively affecting their personal development, academic skills, and social integration. The expected impacts include improved social skills, enhanced communication abilities, increased self-confidence, emotional growth, cognitive development, and enhanced creativity and imagination.
Songwriting can provide an expressive outlet for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them process emotions, cope with challenges, and build resilience. It allows them to share their unique experiences and connect with others who may relate to their feelings. Additionally, songwriting fosters creativity, self-expression, and a sense of accomplishment, contributing to their overall well-being.

In the Workshop students play instruments, sing, and engage in creative and analytical construction of their music. The students write, record, and perform original musical compositions using these musical composition tools. Our program leaves students with increased fluency and engagement in songwriting, a basic understanding of song structure, and lyric writing with positive guidance and feedback from peers and instructors. Not only is this program recreational, it is designed to give students insight into navigating options for real potential career paths within the music industry. Additionally, music is a tool for emotional regulation and exploration of talent, promoting a sense of achievement. Our priority is providing immersive performing arts experiences, intertwining personal growth with educational exploration.

At the program’s culmination, the students complete an original creation in music. Students have a public performance for family, friends, and the community to perform their song(s) and individual talents.
