Project Title: Winter Clothing for Campers
Project Description:

OSPREY Camp is a wilderness school providing elementary students with immersive overnight camp experiences as part of their outdoor science curriculum. Our program also includes opportunities for high school students to serve as mentors, fostering leadership and environmental stewardship.

Many students who attend our camp lack essential winter clothing such as jackets, gloves, warm socks, and hats. Without proper gear, their ability to fully participate in outdoor learning is limited, and they face unnecessary discomfort in colder conditions.

Our goal is to provide campers in need with high-quality winter clothing they can take home and keep. By ensuring every child is properly equipped, we can enhance their experience at camp while also supporting their well-being beyond our program. With your support, we can remove this barrier and ensure all students have access to the full benefits of outdoor education.

Project Title: Workforce Ready Southwest Virginia
Project Description:

We are humbly requesting $10,000 from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support the "Workforce Ready Southwest Virginia" project. This program is designed to address the needs of economically disadvantaged children in Western Virginia, particularly in the Roanoke Valley, by providing critical skills and education to help them overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.

The "Workforce Ready Southwest Virginia" project aims to reach 4,000 students during the upcoming school year with targeted programs focused on financial literacy and workforce readiness. Through hands-on, experiential learning, students will gain the tools they need to succeed academically and professionally, while understanding the long-term impact of informed decision-making.

Key components of the project include:
• Financial Literacy Programming: Utilizing our K-12 financial literacy programming, students learn how money moves through our community, how to make informed financial decisions, as well as budgeting, savings, and how the stock market works, empowering them to break the cycle of poverty.
• Workforce Readiness: Through programming such as Polite Pathways soft skills curriculum, students will be equipped for their futures by practicing communication, teamwork, and critical thinking, skills as well as proper professional etiquette, to prepare them for meaningful employment opportunities.
• Entrepreneurship Education: Through experiential learning opportunities such as our Career Success at Radford University, students are encouraged to be innovative and have entrepreneurial thinking, enabling them to envision and pursue their own business ventures.
• JA at Kids Square: By integrating JA’s award-winning Our City financial literacy program into Kids Square’s Tiny Town, elementary students across Southwest Virginia can actively engage with foundational economic principles in a dynamic, interactive environment.

A critical component of this initiative is addressing the information gap that often limits young people from reaching their full potential. Many students in our region face systemic barriers and lack access to the knowledge and resources needed to achieve economic stability. By implementing our programming throughout local schools, we aim to empower students from all areas of our region with the tools necessary to break out of generational poverty, a persistent challenge in our area.

Project Title: Birth and postpartum doula support for teenage mothers
Project Description:

Transformed Birth Services (TBS) is determined to decrease maternal health disparities. We provide birth and postpartum community doula support for underserved mothers in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

For this project, TBS will collaborate with high school counselors and other local organizations in order to identify pregnant teenage mothers. TBS will help connect these mothers with community resources to help meet their needs. We will also address social determinants of health by ensuring easier access to nutritious food, transportation, and safe housing. A birth doula will help this young mother prepare for labor and delivery, attend the birth with her, bring her a care package (sanitary products, diapers, wipes, food, and lactation products), and check up on her during her postpartum time. If she needs further support, TBS will provide a postpartum doula to help her care for herself and understand how to care of her newborn. Postpartum doulas also keep a special eye on the mother’s mental health and provide further connection to resources if possible. Because the majority of the mothers we work with are low income, TBS helps cover the cost of lactation services, pelvic floor therapy, or perinatal mental health counseling.

Transformed Birth Services focuses on providing culturally sensitive support and can provide doula services in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Arabic. Our doulas are paid through nonprofit funding so that mothers who could not otherwise afford support have access to such life changing services. In this way we are able improve health outcomes for underserved mothers.

The depth of support that we provide for one woman goes deep. We become very involved in their lives and are able to help in ways that make significant impacts. Thank you for considering our organization.

Project Title: HI-ART
Project Description:

Every year Tubac Center of the Arts hosts a special exhibition of art created by our local high school students. Just as in all exhibitions during our regular season, we have students apply, jury the entries and hang from 85-100 pieces in our galleries. Five cash awards including the Best of Show, Award of Excellence, Award of Merit and two Honorary Mention(s) are presented. In addition, a college scholarship award to a graduation senior that is based on both an essay and their art is also awarded. We would like to be able to offer two scholarship awards to seniors going on to college. These young students will be the next generation of artists, art collectors and supporters of the arts. If the private sector invests more robustly in the creative sector, it will help to fuel economic growth, build community identity, drive innovation, and make our communities more vibrant, competitive, and resilient. The arts enrich lives. We want to help and support the next generation to know and appreciate the role that the arts play to enhance individual lives as well as help to build healthy communities.
A grant to help support these high school students who represent the next generation is needed and will be greatly appreciated.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: February 27, 2025
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Tuition Assistance for Low Income Families
Project Description:

Westside Christian Academy (WCA) is a private classical Christian school located in Westlake, Ohio. Although we are known for our rigorous academics, our focus extends beyond academics alone. At WCA, students are seen as unique individuals who have the opportunity to grow in their moral development and learn to know and love God, as well as all that is true, beautiful, and good..
Our community has experienced significant growth, increasing from 130 students in 2015-2016 to 370 students in fall of 2024, with a projected enrollment of nearly 450 by 2028. As our numbers grow, we desire that our school continues to be financially accessible to families who desire to enroll. About twenty percent of our population qualifies for low income status, which is defined as a family income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Although Ohio’s EdChoice program covers tuition in part, it does not fully cover tuition costs and per state guidelines low-income families cannot be charged with the difference. For the 2023-2024 school year, the total “gap” between the EdChoice monies and the actual tuition costs was $217,388. We are seeking to raise funds to help bridge this gap. This year, our goal is to raise $50,000 in grants.
We would like to ask if you would consider a grant of $10,000 for tuition assistance for low-income families? We believe a classical Christian education would greatly benefit these students and position them well for success. In a 2019 comparative study of six school types conducted by the University of Notre Dame, it was the classical school graduates that achieved substantially higher scores in all life outcome measures. (For more information, please visit https://classicaldifference.com/good-soil/). Thank you for considering this opportunity.
