Project Title: Tustin Community Preschool Field Trip – The Nutcracker
Project Description:

Our preschool seeks funding to enrich our students’ cultural education through a field trip to The Barclay Theater to experience a professional ballet performance of "The Nutcracker." This field trip offers a unique opportunity for our young learners to engage with classical music, dance, and storytelling in a live theatrical setting.

It is our hope that this experience aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the arts and expand our students’ cultural horizons at a formative age. Research underscores the profound impact of arts exposure on early childhood development, enhancing cognitive abilities, creativity, and social-emotional skills. By immersing our preschoolers in the enchanting world of "The Nutcracker," we aim to ignite their imaginations and inspire a lifelong love for the arts.

The grant will cover tickets, transportation, and educational materials to prepare our students for the performance. Our dedicated educators will integrate preparatory lessons on ballet, music, and the story of "The Nutcracker" before our trip to ensure that each child gains maximum educational benefit from this experience.

We are committed to making this opportunity accessible to all students, including those from underserved backgrounds. With your support, we can provide a transformative cultural experience that will leave a lasting impression on our preschoolers, nurturing their growth as well-rounded individuals.

Project Title: ArtReach in St. Louis Public Schools
Project Description:

CAM requests support for youth arts education programs in schools through ArtReach (artist-led, curriculum-based K-12 classes, tours and workshops); and onsite through LEAP and New Art in the Neighborhood (after-school, studio art intensives for grades 6-12), and Teen Museum Studies (summer curatorial career development program for grades 9-12 exposing students to all departments of the Museum). These immersive mentorship programs provide opportunities for young people to learn from local, national, and international artists and culminate in professionally installed student exhibitions at CAM.

Program goals are to:
– Foster teen artistic/cultural literacy and continued museum/arts engagement;
– Provide opportunities for personal development that improve students’ teamwork, creative/critical thinking, problem solving skills, and self confidence;
– Offer young people a safe space for growth and career exploration; and
– Encourage students to become lifelong learners through arts exposure.

These programs primarily serve St. Louis Public School (SLPS) students, many of whom are underserved and economically disadvantaged (18% experiencing homelessness, 74% free lunch eligible). SLPS students identify as 78% Black, 6% Hispanic, and 3% Asian and 13% White.

ArtReach Partners Vashon and Sumner High Schools, two Title I SLPS Promise Zone schools in which we offer year-round instruction, are both within a mile of CAM. Vashon and Sumner (99% BIPOC enrollment) are currently unaccredited, are among the most economically disadvantaged in the state and lowest-performing, with Math and Reading proficiency and graduation rates in the bottom 50th percentile of all MO schools. (https://dese.mo.gov/school-data). Through ArtReach Intensives we equitably focus resources in nearby Title I schools and/or those with >80% BIPOC student enrollment, including CVPA, Clyde C. Miller Career Academy; Cardinal Ritter College Prep, among others.

Recognizing that removing financial barriers provides opportunities for students to thrive and engage with art, 100% of programs are offered free of charge.

Total Project Budget: 237,481

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Tuition Assistance Program
Project Description:

he Early Learning Centers of Lubbock (ELC) boast a remarkable legacy of supporting children and families in Lubbock, Texas. Their story began in 1943, during World War II, in East Lubbock. The Carver Heights center was established to serve the vital role of caring for children of low-income mothers contributing to the war effort.

In 1951, a significant chapter unfolded when Carver Heights joined forces with the Lubbock Day Nursery, sponsored by the Junior League. This merger paved the way for the creation of the well-known Early Learning Centers of Lubbock, Inc.

ELC’s growth has been fueled by continuous support from various sources,

including state funding, the United Way, Community Development programs, the Lubbock Independent School District, and generous foundation grants. Today, the organization proudly operates five centers strategically located in North and East Lubbock: Guadalupe, Talkington, Carver, New Directions, and Phenix (opened in August 2022).

In 2022 alone, ELC served over 500 children, ranging from infants to school-age youngsters. Notably, more than half of these children (51%) benefited from full-year care. The centers primarily serve low-income families (93%) and children from ethnic minority backgrounds (86%).

ELC prioritizes fostering child development through an engaging curriculum that emphasizes active learning and equipping children with pre-reading skills. This nurturing environment allows parents to attend work or pursue their education with confidence, knowing their children are receiving quality care. Childcare fees are based on each family’s income, ranging from $90 to $130 per week for full-time care of one child, ensuring affordability and accessibility.

Through dedication and a commitment to fostering young minds, Early Learning Centers of Lubbock continues to be a cornerstone of support for families and a champion for early childhood development in Lubbock.
