Project Title: Seacrest Learning Lab Initiative
Project Description:

The Seacrest Learning Lab at Seacrest Country Day School is specifically designed to support students with language-based learning differences, such as dyslexia and ADHD, through a structured, multisensory approach. The lab utilizes the Orton-Gillingham curriculum, which is scientifically validated to aid students in building effective reading and writing skills through phonics-based, hands-on learning methods. This approach is systematic, ensuring that students receive personalized and direct instruction tailored to their unique needs.

In addition to the foundational curriculum, the Learning Lab also aims to enrich the learning environment with ergonomic furniture that supports student engagement and comfort. Plans to include standing desks and other furniture conducive to learning align with the lab’s goal to create a dynamic learning space that accommodates various learning styles and needs. Furthermore, the integration of experiential learning tools such as puzzles and board games is intended to stimulate cognitive development and make learning more interactive and enjoyable for students.

These enhancements and tools not only support the specific needs of students with learning differences but also contribute to a more inclusive and adaptable educational environment. This approach not only addresses the immediate educational needs of its students but also prepares them for future academic and personal success by fostering essential skills in communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Project Title: Gaga Pit
Project Description:

Greene County Child Care Center is a non-profit childcare and preschool located in Ruckersville, VA that has provided high-quality childcare for the local community for over 30 years. We are one of two centers in Greene County and the only one that serves hot lunches, breakfast and an afternoon snack all while following the USDA guidelines for healthy food. Through fundraising, donations, and parent and community involvement, GCCCC offers a loving, nurturing environment at affordable rates no matter a family’s financial situation.

GCCCC is requesting $1000 to put towards the purchase of supplies to build a Gaga Pit for our school age and summer students. This Gaga pit will offer a much needed outdoor activity for this age group. After much thought and assessment, the Board of Directors has determined this is the best option for the limited outdoor space available. Our students love playing outdoors and are excited about this opportunity.

We will be partnering with the Greene County Public Schools Tech Center to have their woodworking students construct and deliver the unit. This partnership will cut costs significantly while providing the tech students with a chance to practice and put their skills to use.

Total Project Budget: $1500

Project Title: Scholarships for ALICE Families
Project Description:

Our initiative, "Scholarships for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Families," tackles the critical need for accessible childcare in our community, especially for families facing financial challenges. El Campito, renowned for its top-tier childcare services, caters to children aged 6 weeks to 12 years.

In our community, affordable childcare options are scarce, leaving many families without reliable and quality care. As a childcare desert, the lack of accessible and affordable childcare poses a significant obstacle for ALICE families, impeding their ability to work and pursue educational or career opportunities.

Our program seeks to alleviate the financial burden on ALICE families by providing scholarships for childcare services at El Campito. These scholarships will cover the costs of childcare for children within our age range, ensuring that families can access top-quality care without financial strain.

Our selection process prioritizes families demonstrating financial need and a genuine commitment to utilizing childcare services to support their educational or employment endeavors. Additionally, we are committed to providing comprehensive support to scholarship recipients, including access to wraparound services and resources to address any additional needs they may have.

By offering scholarships for childcare at El Campito, we support children’s educational and developmental needs and empower ALICE families to pursue their goals with confidence. Investing in childcare for ALICE families fosters children’s growth and development while enabling parents to work or pursue further education, ultimately strengthening our community’s workforce and economy.

With the generous support of the Hermanowski Foundation, we aim to secure funding for our scholarship program and make a tangible difference in the lives of ALICE families who rely on childcare services at El Campito. Together, we can build a more equitable and supportive community where every child has access to the care and opportunities they deserve, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Project Description:

We are requesting a grant in support of our Literacy Intensive Tutoring program serving 170 Chicago students from low-income backgrounds.

Being able to read independently is an essential skill for all students to be successful students, adults, and citizens. The Literacy Intensive Tutoring (LIT) program for 1st through 5th graders provides literacy intervention for individual students. Weekly lessons meet every child at his or her assessed reading level, with the goal of progressing forward each week. This program focuses on two age groups to accommodate the different literacy needs of the different grade levels. The Decoding and Fluency group is designed for 1st through 3rd graders and the LIT Comprehension group is designed for 3rd through 5th graders. LIT students are placed into these groups based on their assessment results. Tutors are divided into these two groups and trained accordingly.

Project Title: Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco Merger
Project Description:

The Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco (LJYE) has provided free music and performance training for 24 years with zero barriers to entry to youth ages 10-17 and especially, families of color. It has become an elite performance group with alumni playing and recording with the top bands in the world. Co-founders Dr. John Calloway (Musical Director), Sylvia Ramirez (Publicity Director) and Arturo Riera (Managing Director) are not a non-profit or business. Revenue from performance fees have gone directly to Dr. Calloway and Riera and Ramirez (a married couple) have worked pro bono. The group has recorded three albums and was set to end in May of 2024 but alumni, Daniel Riera and Alex Farrell, volunteered to continue the group if an institutional partner could be found. CANA and their program, Carnaval San Francisco, feel the LJYE is too important a community asset, serving students of color for free, to let die. An LJYE alumni family has challenged our organization to raise $10,000 and they will donate an additional $5,000 as a challenge grant. Year one program budget is $15,000 providing an hourly fee for the two alumni musical directors for rehearsals and performances, liability insurance, website and social marketing. Outgoing directors will act as volunteers during a two year transitionary period to make sure organizational values and pedagogy are passed on. Grants and donations plus performance fees will allow the LJYE to continue well into the future with your support.
