Project Title: Literacy Intensive Tutoring Program
Project Description:
We are requesting a grant in support of our Literacy Intensive Tutoring program serving 170 Chicago students from low-income backgrounds.
Being able to read independently is an essential skill for all students to be successful students, adults, and citizens. The Literacy Intensive Tutoring (LIT) program for 1st through 5th graders provides literacy intervention for individual students. The program is designed for struggling readers to help students effectively close the literacy gap and reach their full potential. Students receive one-to-one, customized reading intervention each week with high quality resources and learning tools, including leveled readers, phonics development, high frequency word recognition, reading novels to develop comprehension, and creative writing.
Weekly lessons meet every child at his or her assessed reading level, with the goal of progressing forward each week. This program focuses on two age groups to accommodate the different literacy needs of the different grade levels. The Decoding and Fluency group is designed for 1st through 3rd graders and the LIT Comprehension group is designed for 3rd through 5th graders. LIT students are placed into these groups based on their assessment results. Tutors are divided into these two groups and trained accordingly.
Total Project Budget: $206,948
Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Our LIT program is supported through a combination of unrestricted and restricted funding from foundations, corporations and individuals. Restricted funding for our LIT program include Dollar General Literacy Foundation, Polk Bros. Foundation, Lohengrin Foundation and others.
