Project Title: People Working Cooperatively Home Repairs and Modifications Program
Project Description:

With this program, PWC provides critical and urgent home repairs and accessibility modifications so that low-income homeowners and their families can remain living more independently, safely and healthily in their own homes. Typically, our clients have annual incomes below $14,000 a year and they are elderly, veterans, single parents or grandparents raising children, or individuals with disabilities. While they were once able to afford a home of their own, the vast majority of PWC’s clients have experienced a life change – a serious illness or injury, the loss of a good job or a spouse, or simply getting older and having to live on a fixed income that doesn’t keep up with the cost of living – that has put maintenance of that home beyond their financial reach. This is where PWC can help. Our staff of 85+ trades professionals are certified, licensed, and bonded and can fix problems in plumbing, roofing, electrical and HVAC systems, and fundamental homes structures such as floors, walls, ceilings, steps, doors, entry ways, walkways and more at the highest of professional standards. PWC’s trades staff also give us the capacity to address emergency needs such as a burst pipe spewing water or a furnace that stops working in the middle of winter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PWC serves a diverse clientele. 49% of clients are black, 40% are white and 11% come from other racial backgrounds or declined to respond. While 72% of households we serve are headed by someone over 60, 20% of individuals benefitting from a PWC service are under the age of 18. 68% of clients are female, and 32% are male. PWC services are provided at no cost to the client.

Today’s Date: April 4, 2024

Project Title: Operating Support
Project Description:

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Inland Valley serves over 2,00 youth across two Clubhouses per year with homework help, sports and fitness programs, healthy snack and dinners, enrichment programs and more. The Club opened in June of 2014 and will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. We have served over 8,000 youth since opening and will be expanding to open another Clubhouse in the coming year. The Club is asking for operating support to be able to increase our capacity and allocate funds where they are needed most. The Club has become an essential part of the communities they serve by providing after-school programming for youth, as well as transportation services, enrichment programs, sports leagues, and day camps on non-school days. The Club’s expenses for utilities and costs to run its programs has increased greatly over the past few years due to inflation and other factors. The need for a safe place for kids to go after-school and during school breaks has increased. The Club is a safe haven for many youth whether that’s having a trusted adult to talk to, trying a new sport for the first time, or getting the homework help they need. The Club fills a need for many parents as well who work and rely on a safe place for their child to go so they are not home alone. Club members participate in programs in five core areas: Character & Leadership Development, Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills, The Arts, and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 4/3/2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Deep Roots Charter School
Project Description:

Deep Roots Charter School serves students living in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. Philadelphia is known for its high poverty rate, educational disparities, and racial inequities manifested through gaps in wealth and health. The Kensington area of the city is no different. The Kensington community is most recognizable by the presence of crime and the impact of the opioid epidemic, evident just by walking through the streets. Additionally, with 38% of students identifying as Black/African American and 40% as Hispanic, our school serves a significant proportion of historically marginalized communities. The School District of Philadelphia data also underscores the prevalence of socioeconomic challenges, as 24.8% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, as evidenced by their families’ reliance on SNAP and TANF support. Thus, the need for increased academic support to address glaring inequities experienced by our vulnerable student body is indisputable.

The proposed after-school program aims to address achievement gaps in literacy and math among children who are performing below grade level, particularly those who have been adversely affected by the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Data consistently show that after school and extracurricular programs provide a supportive and enriching environment that helps economically disadvantaged students overcome obstacles, develop essential skills, and achieve their full potential in both academic and personal spheres. By providing additional support, we expect to see an increase in grade level associated indicators for reading level and math. Currently, we have committed $20,000 to pilot our program and are seeking additional funding support to operate the program in full capacity. With funding support, we aim to engage 100 of our students in the afterschool enrichment program for 1.5 hours after the school day. In doing so, we will make up for crucial educational time that was lost during the pandemic

Project Title: Supporting Kids with Cancer Through the Arts
Project Description:

Kids & Art Foundation uses the power of the arts and creativity to mitigate stress, anxiety, and trauma induced from the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer and other critical medical conditions. Our vision is for an integrated care model where participation in the arts is part of a regular treatment plan for all critically ill pediatric patients.

The aim of our work is making daily life-and outcomes-better for children and teens battling illness through every phase of treatment and recovery, including bereavement. While medical teams focus on treating the disease, funding and resources—including time—are scarce for addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of the disease. Cancer patients and their families suffer from a range of psychosocial issues, including PTSD, cancer-related fatigue, and social isolation.

Our programs provide opportunities for connection, enrichment, self-expression, and community for pediatric cancer patients and their families at no cost. Integral to our program design are professional artists, offering a unique, collaborative, and inspiring experience of creative engagement for the children.

Today’s Date: 2-Apr-2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Elevate with Embry
Project Description:

My name is Embry Humber Jr., and in this proposal, I address a pressing issue: the scarcity of guidance and opportunities for at-risk youth in deprived areas. Drawing from my life’s turnaround, I am dedicated to steering young people away from life’s perils and towards a prosperous future. With the support of this funding, I propose the establishment of a comprehensive mentorship and life-skills program. This initiative aims to equip young individuals with the necessary tools for personal and professional success. The program’s focus will include developing core competencies, fostering academic pursuits, and imparting practical life skills to these vulnerable populations.
Program Outline:
Motivated by real success stories and the aspiration for community betterment, I propose a structured range of services aimed at addressing the underlying issues that lead our young people to make poor life choices. The program encompasses personalized academic assistance, career advice, substance abuse interventions, and teachings in financial management.
To launch and sustain this vital program, I am seeking a grant to cover all necessary costs, including payments for mentors, acquisition of educational materials, and other operational expenses. This initiative is not merely a short-term fix but a commitment to preparing our youth with the wisdom and skills to face the world head-on.
Metrics for Success:
Our metrics for success will be measured through program enrollment rates, improvements in academic performance, a decline in community crime rates, and positive feedback from participants and their families. I extend an invitation for you to join me in this life-changing endeavor. By funding this initiative, you are investing in the future of individuals and communities that can truly benefit from this transformative intervention

Project Title: BRAC Tuition Scholarship
Project Description:

Boca Raton Achievement Center (BRAC) is a private, non-profit, specialized school for students with varying abilities and challenges. Some of these challenges are academic, and others are sensory, social and/or emotional.
BRAC provides a tailored education for our middle and high school students, ages 11 – 22. BRAC is not just a school, it’s a personalized learning environment. We understand that each student has unique needs and strengths. Our curriculum and instructional approach are meticulously tailored to cater to these individual requirements, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive.
At BRAC we go beyond academics. Our programs foster holistic development by offering comprehensive instruction in academics, life skills, health and fitness, independent living, and vocational training. Our goal is to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead fulfilling lives beyond the classroom.
As a private school, tuition can be a challenge for many families. Although state funding is available for some our students, the families are still responsible for the difference, which can be anywhere from 7,000 to 18,000 per year. Many families struggle with this, and unfortunately cannot enroll their child due to financial constraints. Our goal is to create a scholarship fund that will bridge the gap for families unable to afford the tuition. We want our school to be for those who need it, not just those who can afford it.

Today’s Date: 04/01/2024
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Youth Scholarships for Year-Round Theater Education Programs
Project Description:

Diminishing resources continue to reduce the availability of arts education in schools, redefining the role nonprofit organizations must play in fulfilling the need for arts programming. Live Arts—a volunteer-powered producing theater in Charlottesville, Virginia—helps meet this need by presenting innovative classes, workshops, and spring/summer camp programs that allow students aged 4 to 17 to experience the excitement of theater, including acting, playwriting, script analysis, improvisation, musical theater, movement, design, technical production, and more.

Studies show these types of programs engage students and expose them to the arts while also:

– Supporting a well-rounded education
– Inspiring creativity and community
– Expanding knowledge of literature, language, music, and culture
– Introducing theater as an art form
– Improving self-confidence
– Practicing in community-based problem-solving.

Live Arts has been a leader in delivering youth education programs for 25 years. Our primary focus is to provide highly immersive, skill-driven camp programs and other educational opportunities throughout the year. Programs like these expand access to the arts; enhance student learning in theater, literature, and music; increase cultural awareness; and help young artists grow into healthy, engaged citizens.

We will use funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to provide 12-15 need-based scholarships ranging from $200 to $600, depending on the program. In doing so, we will remove financial barriers to participation and empower students with the knowledge that they are valued and deserving.

To measure project success, we will track the number of enrollments, demographics, and the amount of financial aid requested/awarded, with a goal of 1) serving 425 youth in FY2025 and 2) reaching a demographic that mirrors our community (35% people of color, US Census 2021). We will also distribute surveys to parents/guardians and camp staff to identify what the students loved and how we can improve, among other topics.

Requested Amount: $7,500

Project Title: Children’s Bereavement Support Program
Project Description:

We are requesting consideration of a grant (and a new partnership with the Hermanowski Foundation) to support Tomorrow’s Rainbow’s vital 2024 Children’s Bereavement Support program, which will provide FREE, equine-assisted bereavement support to ~850 children and their families. Tomorrow’s Rainbow is the only stand-alone grief center in Broward and Palm Beach counties supporting grieving children, teens, and their families. At our 2.5-acre ranch in Coconut Creek, we provide free grief support services for 600+ children annually, ages 3 to 18, who have experienced the loss of a loved one. We simultaneously offer onsite adult grief support groups to assist the needs of the children’s family members. Our robust programming provides the necessary tools for each child to map out their own unique grief journey in a way that is meaningful to them; all in an emotionally safe, natural environment designed for hope and healing. Our clients and their families live and work in Broward and Palm Beach County, and most are from low-and-moderate income households. No other facility in the nation combines the time-tested, best-practice models of both the Dougy Center model for peer-facilitated grief support and the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association’s (EAGALA) model for Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). By incorporating these two successful models into our support services, grieving children not only begin to share their feelings and experiences, they also build emotional resilience and a path towards a successful future. This grant will support our comprehensive program, which includes our on-site grief support program, our intensive Family Trauma program and our newest, mobile, Grief on the Go program, which brings our flagship programming directly into the communities of most need across Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Total Project Budget: $ 834,063

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We currently have $275,000 committed and another $537,000 pending – primarily from grants and foundation support, as well as some individial giving. We expect to raise enough funding to offset the direct expenses of the program, which will serve ~850 bereaved children this year.

Project Duration: Our on-site Children’s Bereavement Program and Family Trauma program run continuously, year round. Grief on the Go runs in coordination with partner agencies and is scheduled based on need and funding.
