Project Title: Saving Our Youth & Communities from Gun and Gang Violence
Project Description:

Our initiative aims to significantly reduce gun and gang violence in Cleveland by implementing a dual-component strategy. Firstly, our meticulously designed 10-week cognitive behavioral program, divided into Phases 1 and 2, targets the root psychological and social factors contributing to violence. This program equips participants with the tools for personal transformation, fostering critical thinking and emotional resilience essential for disengaging from violent behaviors. Secondly, the Community Assist Team (C.A.T.) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of our youth through the "Safe Passages" initiative, which provides secure routes for students traveling to and from local schools. Beyond safeguarding our children, the C.A.T. actively works to disrupt the cycles of violence in our neighborhoods through targeted Community Violence Intervention efforts. Together, these comprehensive approaches create a synergistic effect, not only curbing immediate threats but also building a foundation for lasting peace and safety in our communities.

Project Title: Artistic Horizons: Unlocking Potential and Joy for Homeless Youth
Project Description:

Deep Roots, a sanctuary for families grappling with homelessness. Our core mission at Deep Roots is not only to provide shelter but also to kindle hope and facilitate growth among those we serve, particularly children and young adults. Your foundation’s dedication to transforming lives and nurturing potential aligns perfectly with our vision, especially in our quest to introduce the transformative power of the arts into the lives of our young residents. We house over 100 children annually and have over 300 alumni who we continue to engage and support.
For countless children in our care, the harsh realities of homelessness have overshadowed the simple joys of childhood, such as exploring creativity through the arts. Engaging in artistic activities is not a mere luxury; it is a vital component of personal development and well-being. Research underscores the profound impact of the arts on children, particularly those facing adversity. Participation in the arts has been linked to improved emotional expression and regulation, enhanced academic performance, and the development of critical thinking and social skills. For homeless children, these activities provide a respite from their daily struggles, offering them the tools to communicate their experiences, foster resilience, and envision a future beyond their current circumstances.
With the support of the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, we aim to launch an after-school arts program within our shelter, “Artistic Horizons: Unlocking Potential and Joy for Homeless Youth”. This initiative will offer a diverse range of artistic outlets—from music and painting to drama and dance—tailored to uncover and nurture the unique interests and talents of each child. Our goal is not only to provide an escape from the challenges these children face but also to empower them with the confidence and skills to pursue their dreams and achieve their full potential.

Project Title: Collaborative Songwriting Program
Project Description:

Hear Your Song (HYS) empowers children and teens with serious illnesses and complex health needs to make their voices heard through collaborative songwriting. HYS provides power and choice—and a microphone—to young people with a wide range of diagnoses, both physical and mental health conditions, that so often deprive them of both power and choice in their day-to-day lives. At HYS, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to define themselves on their own terms.

HYS seeks funding to expand our national Collaborative Songwriting Program for youth living with serious illnesses and complex health needs. We deliver this program, free of charge for all youth and partner organizations, through both virtual and in-person songwriting sessions facilitated by community collaborations with children’s hospitals, camp programs, and other nonprofits.

The goal of all aspects of this program is to offer long-term empowering experiences to youth living with significant health conditions. Through trauma-informed, kid-driven songwriting sessions, youth participants write and produce their own songs about anything they want—from loving pasta to living with epilepsy—and to participate as much as they want in the process of turning their lyrics into fully-produced songs. All youth write their own lyrics and many record their own vocals, compose their own melodies, and produce their own beats and tracks. Others suggest ideas for musical style, melody, instrumentation, and tempo, which our volunteer composers and musicians then use to create a recording of the song that captures, as precisely as possible, what the child imagined.

The goal is for every youth songwriter to continue to engage in Hear Your Song’s ongoing programming and community, including Peer Songwriting Groups and live performances following the initial songwriting experience. Pivotal to our mission, HYS amplifies the songs that kids write to ensure that our youth songwriters’ voices are heard and celebrated.

Project Title: The Folkloric Children’s Dance Program
Project Description:

Ecuadorian American Cultural Center (EACC) offers folkloric dance classes to children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 14 through the Children’s Dance Program. This program offers participants the opportunity to experience the rich diversity of Ecuadorian culture through dance, art and music. In addition to the dance component, the classes teach children about the history and culture of the different communities that exist in Ecuador. The educational component includes workshops, arts and crafts, groups projects, guest speakers, and field trips.

Classes are offered on a sliding scale so that they are accessible to all with wardrobe and other materials provided at no cost. The Center provides various performance opportunities to the children so they can showcase what they have learned. For example, they participate in recitals at the conclusion of the spring and winter cycles, and in events organized by the Ecuadorian Consulate and other community organizations. The Center enrolls between 60-100 students annually in this program.

Children’s Folkloric Dance serves a diverse group of local children from many backgrounds and cultures and many program participants are immigrants to the U.S. from Ecuador. For children adjusting to life in a new place, the program provides a unique opportunity to connect to their heritage and culture while simultaneously fostering connection to new friends in a new place. For first, second and third generation Ecuadorian American, this program offers the opportunity to be immersed in the culture that shaped their parents, grandparents and ancestors, strengthening family connections and broadening horizons. These connections are at the heart of the program, ensuring the sense of belonging that is so necessary for children to thrive, flourish and reach their fullest potential, firmly rooted and ready to grow.
