Project Title: Catapult Internship
Project Description:

Nextech was created in 2015 to address the widening gap between computer-related employment opportunities and the number of individuals pursuing these opportunities. Nextech works to elevate technical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills of Indiana K-12 students, inspiring and enabling young people from all backgrounds to pursue careers in technology.

The Nextech Catapult program was created in 2016 and initially served only Marion County students. With the success of the Indianapolis site and 80% of active Catapult alumni pursuing a STEM path after high school, Catapult expanded to its second site in Evansville in 2022 and grew to its third site in Bloomington in summer 2023. Each cohort is composed of 24 students.

Catapult is a fully immersive, 5-week paid computer science internship for high school students (primarily juniors and seniors) who aspire to a career in technology. 60% of active Catapult alumni come from populations under-represented in Indiana tech and 50% are people of color.

Taking place during the summer and taught by industry professionals in conjunction with a licensed computer science teacher, participants develop technical skills, create authentic peer relationships, improve workplace readiness, create plans for postsecondary success, and build deep roots for a lifelong personal and professional connection to Indiana.

Unlike traditional programs that focus on one competency, Nextech leverages strategic partnerships to deliver best-in-class experiences, while removing barriers such as transportation, meals and equipment.

Project Title: Airplane Launcher
Project Description:

The Children’s Museum of Brownsville is thrilled to present an innovative and engaging addition to our interactive exhibits: The Paper Airplane Launcher. With the generous support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we aim to enhance the educational experience of children and families by providing a hands-on opportunity to explore aerodynamic principles in a fun and interactive manner.

The Paper Airplane Launcher is more than just a toy – it is a tool for learning and discovery. Visitors will have the opportunity to send handcrafted paper airplanes soaring through the air, observing firsthand the concepts of thrust, lift, and drag. By experimenting with planes of various shapes and sizes, participants can gain a deeper understanding of aerodynamic flight principles while actively engaging with the exhibit.

One of the unique features of the Paper Airplane Launcher is its ability to place participants in the pilot seat. By allowing them to change the angle and direction of the flight, the launcher provides a dynamic and immersive experience. Through trial and error, visitors can discover which plane designs perform the best, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This interactive exhibit aligns perfectly with the Children’s Museum of Brownsville’s mission to inspire curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning. By providing hands-on experiences that foster exploration and discovery, we aim to ignite a passion for science and engineering in the minds of young learners.

With the support of the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we can bring this exciting project to life and create lasting memories for children and families in our community. Together, we can inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. Ready, aim, launch into a world of exploration and discovery at the Children’s Museum of Brownsville!

Project Title: Youth Mental Health Curriculum in Public Elementary & Middle Schools
Project Description:

Floyd Healthcare Foundation recognizes the importance of youth mental wellness and is launching a mental health initiative in our schools, providing Positive Action curriculum (positiveaction.net) to all elementary and middle public schools in Rome City and Floyd County, Georgia, over 7,000 students, and paying for facilitators’ training.

Youth are facing a mental health crisis, with 1 in 4 experiencing an illness such as anxiety and depression, and 1 in 3 not receiving needed mental health services. In 2021 and 2022, Floyd Healthcare Foundation met with local nonprofit and community representatives; this post pandemic assessment found youth mental health a consistent concern. Our local public schools have witnessed an increase in student behavioral issues since the pandemic and agree youth are experiencing mental health issues and outside assistance is needed. Approximately 67.8% of Rome City Schools students and 38.2% of Floyd County Schools students are considered economically disadvantaged. Floyd Healthcare Foundation is collaborating with Rome City and Floyd County, Georgia Boards of Education staff, administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers, and school nurses to execute Positive Action Curriculum in our schools. Positive Action came highly recommended by the Boys & Girls Club of NW Georgia as an evidence-based program that addresses all areas of the self: the physical, intellectual, and social/emotional and reduces discipline issues, violence, bullying, and suspensions, plus improves reading and math scores.

Floyd Healthcare Foundation is requesting $7,260 to purchase two Positive Action Elementary Starter Bundles ($2,320 each) and two Middle School Starter Bundles (1,310 each). Project Title: College Support and Mentoring for Historically Underserved Students
Project Description:

The TeamWork Education Foundation respectfully requests funding to support a newly formed partnership with Palm Beach State College that will help students pursue degrees, creating a cycle where promising kids embrace the opportunity for higher education in their community. Our goal is to nurture their passions and develop them into careers that will keep them in Palm Beach County and help them contribute to the long-term success and economic vitality of our community. Crucially, TeamWork does not limit its support to scholarship funding; as students transition into college and begin pursuing careers, they need a community of support to encourage, support, and guide them along the way. Volunteers at TeamWork and staff at Palm Beach State College will give students access to mentoring and other peer resources so they can reach their full potential while pursuing their degrees. Upon graduation, they will have marketable skills that set them up to pursue high-paying jobs, ensuring tomorrow’s workforce is well-suited to sustain and grow the local economy.

Since 2012, TeamWork has awarded over 800 scholarships, totaling over $2 million in support of local students who are pursuing higher education. This partnership builds upon that work, solidifying the pipeline of local students to Palm Beach State College and building a support system that will get more students to graduation and into the workforce with the skills they need to pursue stable, high-paying jobs. If fully funded, this grant will provide scholarships to three aspiring Palm Beach State students.

Total Project Budget: $395,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): TeamWork relies heavily on the generosity of individual donors to support our ongoing operations. Additionally, we have pending grant applications before First Citizens Bank and the Mirasol Foundation, and we are in the process of cultivating new corporate and foundation donors.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03-03-2024
Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: Free Out Of School (OST) music lessons for underserved kids
Project Description:

From its inception, the goal of the Dickinson Music Enrichment Center has been to offer
a completely free after-school music program for underserved students in grades 4-6
(ages 9-12). Additionally, we provide free instruments for students who continue the
program and enroll in band in the 6 th grade, which is the earliest you participate in the
band program in grade school. The free lessons will continue through middle school and
high school for those students that may need additional instruction to improve their
technique and sound quality.
Established in 2021, the founders spent 12 months posturing and preparing to launch
their vision. Through the help of a grant in 2022 from the Dickinson Management
District, the use of space at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Dickinson, and the support
of many individual and corporate sponsors, in the fall of 2023, the program launched
with a total of 15 students. The students are mentored and coached by 11 th and 12 th
grade students at Dickinson Sr. High School, who serve as section leaders with the
Dickinson ISD band program. The coaches are paid positions. We find this type of
structure for our students provides good mentorship experience and helps our older
students who are hoping to increase their opportunities of band scholarships at the
university level. In the current 2023-24 school year, the program has 9 student
coaches/mentors.
The goal of The Dickinson Music Enrichment Foundation is to provide an opportunity for
all children, even those facing economic challenges, to access and participate in a
music curriculum. This initiative aims to remove financial obstacles that may hinder
children from experiencing the benefits of music education early in their lives. By doing
so, it seeks to provide a fair and equal chance for every child to explore and enjoy the
advantages that come.
