Project Title: Youth Mental Health Curriculum in Public Elementary & Middle Schools
Project Description:

Floyd Healthcare Foundation recognizes the importance of youth mental wellness and is launching a mental health initiative in our schools, providing Positive Action curriculum (positiveaction.net) to all elementary and middle public schools in Rome City and Floyd County, Georgia, over 7,000 students, and paying for facilitators’ training.

Youth are facing a mental health crisis, with 1 in 4 experiencing an illness such as anxiety and depression, and 1 in 3 not receiving needed mental health services. In 2021 and 2022, Floyd Healthcare Foundation met with local nonprofit and community representatives; this post pandemic assessment found youth mental health a consistent concern. Our local public schools have witnessed an increase in student behavioral issues since the pandemic and agree youth are experiencing mental health issues and outside assistance is needed. Approximately 67.8% of Rome City Schools students and 38.2% of Floyd County Schools students are considered economically disadvantaged. Floyd Healthcare Foundation is collaborating with Rome City and Floyd County, Georgia Boards of Education staff, administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers, and school nurses to execute Positive Action Curriculum in our schools. Positive Action came highly recommended by the Boys & Girls Club of NW Georgia as an evidence-based program that addresses all areas of the self: the physical, intellectual, and social/emotional and reduces discipline issues, violence, bullying, and suspensions, plus improves reading and math scores.

Floyd Healthcare Foundation is requesting $7,260 to purchase two Positive Action Elementary Starter Bundles ($2,320 each) and two Middle School Starter Bundles (1,310 each). The Elementary includes six classroom kits, one for each grade Kindergarten – 5th and the Middle includes three classroom kits, one each for 6th – 8th grades. Each classroom kit serves 30 students per classroom for a total of 540 students impacted by this request. All materials are prepared for facilitators.
