Project Title: The Confidence Suite: Designing a Curriculum to Elevate Girls’ Confidence and Well-being
Project Description:

Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) shares the Hermanowski Family Foundation’s mission to improve and transform the lives of youth across the United States. GOTRI is a nationally recognized leader in physical activity-based, positive youth development programming, with a mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. For over 25 years, the organization has diligently and intentionally created programming for girls in 3rd-8th grade that strengthens the vision of a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

Recent studies have highlighted a concerning decline in girls’ mental health and physical activity levels. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that three in five U.S. teen girls felt persistently sad or hopeless in 2021, with only 24% of 6- to 17-year-olds participating in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

GOTRI addresses these mental health concerns as the only national physical activity-based, positive youth development program with a research-based curriculum, trained coaches, and a commitment to serving all girls. The organization is creating a new suite of curricula, the Confidence Suite, designed to reach girls at a critical age and strengthen their confidence. This suite aims to increase relevancy to current issues girls are facing, provide impactful lessons promoting new social-emotional learning skillsets, and elevate the focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA).

By updating existing curricula to meet these critical challenges, GOTRI ensures that participants develop social-emotional skills such as managing emotions, intentional decision-making, helping others, and resolving conflict. These skills promote self-respect, self-efficacy, and resiliency among participants, empowering them to successfully navigate life challenges long after the program’s conclusion.

Project Title: Giving Help Financial Support Program
Project Description:

Low & middle-income families whose child is battling cancer are at high risk for homelessness. The Giving Help Family Support Program assists with rent or mortgage support. It is hard to watch a child suffer with cancer, but unthinkable that they should also become homeless at this critical time. Not only must families cope with the overwhelming fear that they could lose their child, but they also face major financial challenges of very high medical costs & a loss of income from caring for a sick child.
To help families cope with financial hardship, the Giving Help Financial Support Program provides relief towards basic needs such as housing, transportation, medication, groceries, & other daily living necessities. POST will pay one bill in each category (rent/mortgage, utilities, transportation) per calendar year. This program also includes our Preventing Homelessness & Food Insecurity for Children Battling Cancer Initiative, as we established an onsite food pantry for immediate needs. This is supplemented by giving families gift cards to buy groceries.
The entirety of this program strives to prevent homelessness & hunger in local children battling cancer, ensuring that 100% of the families we serve – especially those at greatest risk of facing eviction, whose child is having a bone marrow transplant, or single parents – have safe housing, enough food to eat, & will never have to choose between lifesaving medication or paying for basic needs.

Project Title: Children’s Services to Independence Program (CSTI)
Project Description:

CSTI is dedicated to empowering blind and visually impaired (BVI) youth in Broward County, offering a range of beneficial, recreational, and educational programs designed to foster development and independence. We have proudly relocated to a larger facility in Sunrise, FL, enabling us to expand our services and reach even more BVI youth across Broward County. Currently, CSTI serves 94 BVI children under 13 and their families, including 35 participants in the LHOB Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program for infants to five-year-olds. This program focuses on enhancing remaining senses and vision (hearing, touch, taste, smell, and proprioceptive) through play therapy, which encompasses cognitive knowledge, communication, assistive technology, and compensatory skills alongside sociability, personal hygiene, and motor skills development. Our staff conducts thorough assessments to create personalized education plans for each child.
We offer year-round programming for older children aged 6 to 13, including academic enrichment, field trips, and recreational activities during non-school days, Saturdays, and summer breaks. These programs emphasize safe travel, cooking, self-care, Braille, computer use, polite social interaction, self-determination, and self-advocacy, following the evidence-based Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). STEAM elements are integrated into activities and education, facilitated by our experienced Teachers of the Visually Impaired, ensuring personalized attention in one-on-one or small group settings.
Our services include necessary equipment for social and educational advancement. Notably, many CSTI participants have multiple disabilities. Given the School Board of Broward County’s reports of an increasing trend in BVI children with co-occurring disorders, CSTI plays a crucial role in bridging the gap for children who are otherwise excluded from their school’s Visually Impaired Program, promoting academic and life success for BVI children in our community.

Project Title: HJTEP Wellness Program in the Learning Resource Center
Project Description:

HJTEP has operated in central Harlem for over 50 years focused on closing the racial equity gap against entry into the sport of tennis. Equally weighted with the tennis program are the academic and wellness programs in our Learning Resource Center (LRC). This application is being submitted for the Wellness program.

The nexus of focus at HJTEP’s LRC is on academic success, development of executive functioning skills, and optimizing the personal wellness & fitness of our youth. At the start of every academic year, the LRC diagnostically assesses each child with a tool called EXACT PATH that creates a snapshot of specific educational skill and health gaps. That information is the foundation for personalized learning plans tailored to individual academic and health needs, along with targeted interventions that can include private academic tutoring sessions, mental health support, social & emotional learning, mentorship, meditation & mindfulness practices. LRC instructors meet each student athlete at their respective educational and health levels with a customized learning plan.

The LRC’s wellness program functions as the glue in HJTEP’s holistic programmatic success in the lives of our youth. We have deepened our wellness program in efforts to alleviate disproportionate challenges faced by Harlem’s BIPOC youth, such as limited resources for mental health & resilience, prolific poverty-related physical health & nutritional challenges, lacking academic matriculation, and regular exposure to violence. Without tracking physical, nutritional, social, and emotional learning, mindfulness & mental health supportive programs alongside our tennis and academic pillars, successes among our youth would not depict sustainability or depth. Every child learns independent agency, discipline, and the ability to problem solve. They also understand needs for contemplation and inner clarity. The wellness program in the LRC creates an environment where excellence in tennis, academics, and personal health becomes an embodied, achievable reality for every child.
