Project Title: HJTEP Wellness Program in the Learning Resource Center
Project Description:
HJTEP has operated in central Harlem for over 50 years focused on closing the racial equity gap against entry into the sport of tennis. Equally weighted with the tennis program are the academic and wellness programs in our Learning Resource Center (LRC). This application is being submitted for the Wellness program.
The nexus of focus at HJTEP’s LRC is on academic success, development of executive functioning skills, and optimizing the personal wellness & fitness of our youth. At the start of every academic year, the LRC diagnostically assesses each child with a tool called EXACT PATH that creates a snapshot of specific educational skill and health gaps. That information is the foundation for personalized learning plans tailored to individual academic and health needs, along with targeted interventions that can include private academic tutoring sessions, mental health support, social & emotional learning, mentorship, meditation & mindfulness practices. LRC instructors meet each student athlete at their respective educational and health levels with a customized learning plan.
The LRC’s wellness program functions as the glue in HJTEP’s holistic programmatic success in the lives of our youth. We have deepened our wellness program in efforts to alleviate disproportionate challenges faced by Harlem’s BIPOC youth, such as limited resources for mental health & resilience, prolific poverty-related physical health & nutritional challenges, lacking academic matriculation, and regular exposure to violence. Without tracking physical, nutritional, social, and emotional learning, mindfulness & mental health supportive programs alongside our tennis and academic pillars, successes among our youth would not depict sustainability or depth. Every child learns independent agency, discipline, and the ability to problem solve. They also understand needs for contemplation and inner clarity. The wellness program in the LRC creates an environment where excellence in tennis, academics, and personal health becomes an embodied, achievable reality for every child.
