Project Title: Summer Academy for Youth with Dyslexia
Project Description:

Haley’s Hope (HH) stands at the forefront of addressing the educational needs of youth with dyslexia, particularly through its innovative Summer Academy program. Established in 2022, after a two-year collaboration with Landmark School, a vanguard in the field of Language-Based Learning Disabilities (LBLDs) education, HH has introduced the region’s first three-week Summer Academy. The innovative program has been meticulously crafted to respond to the academic challenges faced by students with dyslexia, especially during the summer months.
Despite dyslexia’s impact on one in five people, LBLD is not readily recognized by either the academic or medical environment, and typically public schools do not give teachers the time or training to teach to the needs of these bright students. As a result, hundreds of students struggle to learn and typically, ‘hit the wall’ by third or fourth grade when wide-ranging academic skills are required for ongoing success. HH’s Summer Academy aims to address this critical gap by emerging as a transformative solution. The methods-based learning program has been tailored to the unique strengths and challenges of youth with dyslexia. It encompasses 52.5 hours of intensive, personalized academic programming, which aims to fortify students’ skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and study techniques. More importantly, it strategically counters the academic regression commonly seen during summer breaks in youth with dyslexia, thereby bolstering not only individual students but also the broader educational ecosystem.
Recognizing the barriers that socioeconomically disadvantaged families face, HH is committed to breaking down these obstacles. With the support of $4,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, HH aims to offset the costs of the Summer Academy program. This support would enable two students with dyslexia facing economic hardships to participate in the 2024 Summer Academy, thereby significantly advancing the fight against the educational and societal challenges presented by dyslexia.

Project Title: ArtsQuest’s Free Education & Outreach Programs
Project Description:

Grant funds are requested for supplies for ArtsQuest’s free artistic, entrepreneurial, and leadership programs for local low-to-middle income students. Programs are designed for underserved youth who may not be traditional learners, offering a unique experience to achieve. Through exposure to the arts, students develop artistic skills, experiment with various media, and discover new interests and possible careers.

Since 2004 ArtsQuest has offered the ArtSmart art enrichment program free of charge to over 500 elementary and middle school students each year. Students are challenged to excel through comprehensive, in-depth instruction in a wide range of disciplines including painting, mosaics, fiber arts, ceramics, printmaking, public art, improv comedy, digital illustration and more.

In 2021 ArtsQuest launched the free Teen Takeover afterschool program to give local middle and high school students the opportunity to book a dynamic multi-disciplinary event held at ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory Arts Center. Students research and curate an event that includes energetic programming in dance, visual arts, performance art, media arts, spoken word, and more.

ArtsQuest has offered the free Marketing Musikfest class since 2015 where students in grades 9-12 learn real life marketing skills from ArtsQuest’s staff. As part of this credited business course, students explore careers in the music industry, production requirements, development of business and marketing plans, contract negotiation, and funding.

In 2024 ArtsQuest will launch a new program to support local high school students interested in careers in film and cinema programming. The free Cinema Programming will be held in March 2024, with the goal of expanding the program throughout the year.

Approximately 56% of ArtsQuest’s 4,350 programs and events are free to attend, though students are never denied the opportunity to participate in programming due to financial hardship. In 2023 ArtsQuest awarded nearly $29,000 in scholarships impacting over 250 underserved individuals.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/11/2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Moving History Forward
Project Description:

The Museum of North Idaho (MONI) preserves and illuminates our past to inspire our future. Currently, MONI occupies a 4,371 square foot building that is scheduled for demolition due to deterioration. After 45 years in this facility, the Museum collection has grown, and the space is too small to house exhibits, artifacts, archives, and operations.

MONI is planning to renovate a historic building and construct an underground expansion to house exhibits, art, and educational resources. This new 11,500 sq. ft. facility allows us to bring together stakeholders to participate in creating exhibits that identify and represent the culture and history of our three-county region (the Coeur d’Alene Region) to the residents, both new and old, as well as tourists.

Wonderful artifacts and artworks are locked away in off-site storage due to lack of space. Since our current building is insufficient to fit our growing needs, our long-term ability to disseminate historic knowledge through educational programming and outreach hinges upon having a new facility.

In addition to lack of space, the current museum facility does not have heat, forcing us to close to the public during the cold winter months (November – March) in North Idaho. This significantly limits the ability to have school field trips as we are only able to accommodate them four months of the school year. MONI currently serves approximately 800-1000 students through field trips. With the ability to stay open year round, we will greatly expand the number of schools and classes we partner with, supplementing the educational needs of our community. Having a new facility is essential to meeting this growing need.

Project Title: Ending the Silence
Project Description:

According to a study by the California Endowment: ““Young adults in California experience mental health challenges at alarming rates, with more than three-quarters reporting anxiety in the last year, more than half reporting depression, 31% experiencing suicidal thinking and 16% self-harm.:
NAMI-SCC brings Ending the Silence (ETS) into high schools and middle schools in Santa Clara County. ETS is a 50-minute interactive and transformational presentation devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative presentation, short videos, and personal testimonies.
A trained two-person team, one being an individual who shares their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition, delivers the program. Students learn about symptoms and indicators of mental illness and are given resources aimed at helping themselves, their friends, or family members who may be in need of support.
At the conclusion of the presentation, students are given resource cards with valuable phone numbers and websites of mental health agencies and youth support services, along with a list of symptoms/warning signs of mental illness. Postcards are mailed home to parents informing them about the presentation.
Moving stories from positive role models have the power to change kids’ views. The discussion gives students the rare opportunity to ask questions about mental health challenges to people who have lived it. The presentation’s message of empathy and hope encourages students to actively care for themselves and their friends. It also teaches them it’s okay to talk about what they’re feeling. ETS covers:
1. Early warning signs
2. Facts and statistics about youth and mental health conditions
3. When, where, and how to get help for themselves or their friends
4. When it’s not okay to keep a secret
