Project Title: Moving History Forward
Project Description:

The Museum of North Idaho (MONI) preserves and illuminates our past to inspire our future. Currently, MONI occupies a 4,371 square foot building that is scheduled for demolition due to deterioration. After 45 years in this facility, the Museum collection has grown, and the space is too small to house exhibits, artifacts, archives, and operations.

MONI is planning to renovate a historic building and construct an underground expansion to house exhibits, art, and educational resources. This new 11,500 sq. ft. facility allows us to bring together stakeholders to participate in creating exhibits that identify and represent the culture and history of our three-county region (the Coeur d’Alene Region) to the residents, both new and old, as well as tourists.

Wonderful artifacts and artworks are locked away in off-site storage due to lack of space. Since our current building is insufficient to fit our growing needs, our long-term ability to disseminate historic knowledge through educational programming and outreach hinges upon having a new facility.

In addition to lack of space, the current museum facility does not have heat, forcing us to close to the public during the cold winter months (November – March) in North Idaho. This significantly limits the ability to have school field trips as we are only able to accommodate them four months of the school year. MONI currently serves approximately 800-1000 students through field trips. With the ability to stay open year round, we will greatly expand the number of schools and classes we partner with, supplementing the educational needs of our community. Having a new facility is essential to meeting this growing need.
