Project Title: No Kids Sleep on the Floor in Our Town! FL-Palm Beach West 2024
Project Description:

Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters utilizes community volunteers to build and deliver twin-size beds (that can be bunked) to kids aged 3-17 sleeping on the floor or in other uncomfortable situations. The volunteers deliver these beds, fully furnished (frames, mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets) to children in need; they partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and community members to build them!

Chapter leadership and their core team show volunteers how to take a pile of wood and construct twin bed frame components with drills, sanders, and saws. SHP’s simple design is easy to follow and requires no woodworking experience. During SHP community "Build Days," volunteers learn about the organization and the need in "their town" and take pride as they transform piles of lumber into twin bed frames. Following each build day, volunteers deliver the beds to local families that requested/qualified for one. SHP Build and Delivery Days facilitate community engagement by providing a fun and practical opportunity to volunteer their time.

Project Title: Vovk Foundation Stringed Instrument Loan Program and Competiton for Students of Ukrainian heritage
Project Description:

Since the inception of Russia’s unjust and savage war against Ukraine, approximately 4000 schools and related educational buildings have been severely damaged or destroyed, putting the academic future of 5.7 million Ukrainian students at risk (UNESCO). The attacks have also destroyed practice and performance venues, instrument collections, and museums dedicated to the Ukrainian music tradition, thus jeopardizing the dreams of tens of thousands of aspiring music students and leaving the possibility of their continued music education at great risk.
The Vovk Foundation proposes an instrument loan program coupled with a competition for high school and college/university students of Ukrainian origin. In 2023, the Foundation received two gifts of fine stringed instruments, with the request from the donors that these violins and violas be loaned to students of high potential. Vovk will partner with the Ukrainian National Womens’ League of America (UNWLA) to market and administer the initiative. A jury consisting of four professional musicians with established careers will be selected for the competition process. High school/college preparatory students will be judged separately from those enrolled in full time performance degree programs. Students in either track will have the opportunity to compete for 1st/2nd/3rd place awards and those winners will have the opportunity to apply for an instrument loan. Instrument loans will be offered only to the medal winners. All entrants will be required to submit recordings based on the standard repertoire. Finalists will be required to audition before the jury. The award winners’ performances will be recorded, edited, and provided to the winners.
The Foundation will assume insurance, equipment maintenance, and associated expenses. Also, in addition to organizing fundraising events. the Foundation will engage in a marketing and awareness campaign to promote the program to secondary and post-secondary institutions, professional orchestras, chamber music societies, and related organizations.

Project Title: Journey & Voyage Program 2025
Project Description:

Chicago Voyagers (CV)’s mission is to empower youth impacted by injustices through adventure therapy programs that foster physical and mental well-being, healthy relationships, and skills for life success. Our programs consist of half-day to multi-day recreational excursions utilizing therapeutic programming and trauma-informed care, covering a broad range of activities that build confidence and inspire trust, persistence, compassion, and teamwork. Activities include canoeing, camping, rock climbing, hiking, bicycling, and backpacking, among others. Teens concurrently engage in emotional challenges designed to enhance self-esteem and build self-sufficiency, while regularly receiving outdoor and conservation education. Our year-round programming and all materials are offered at no cost to participants.

Journeys engage the same group of students for six months or more for outdoor adventure therapy activities. Our staff mentor each student individually, helping them set goals, achieve success, and support each other. The Voyage program builds on Journey, guiding the same group of ten students throughout their middle school and high school years through outdoor adventure therapy activities. Voyages begin with day-long adventures, working up to occasional overnight excursions and culminating in an annual wilderness expedition. Our Voyage program recently received multi-year seed funding, demonstrating strong signs of its sustainability and impact, as well as leading to increased support from our existing funders.

Each of our Journey and Voyage programs uses a multi-faceted, neuroscience-based approach to prevent or diminish the impact of adverse childhood experiences, harnessing the outdoors as a tool for helping youth of color and low-income youth develop the critical skills needed to reach their full potential. 100% of CV participants are taken out of their neighborhoods and into natural green spaces to challenge themselves physically and emotionally while cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 18, 2024
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: ACCEL’s Adaptive Education Program for students who have disabilities
Project Description:

ACCEL’s mission is to provide exceptional educational, behavioral, therapeutic, and vocational programs to individuals who have special needs and developmental disabilities, to give them the necessary skills to learn, work, and live successfully with dignity and independence.

Imagine 11-year-old Zack, who has a sensory processing disorder that makes it so he is hypersensitive to specific textures. Even sitting in a regular school chair feels like needles on Zack’s skin, making it hard for him to focus in the classroom. Or Sarah, age 8, who does not have the fine motor skills to draw using markers. Imagine teaching Bobby, a student who has a visual impairment and an autism diagnosis.

After 40 years of observation, hands-on work, and therapy with thousands of children who have developmental disabilities, we know ACCEL students are not able to successfully learn with traditional teaching materials.

Adaptive Education meets the learning needs of children who have severe disabilities by adapting, supplementing, and often replacing commercial materials. Materials are explicitly designed for each student’s needs, an incredibly time-intensive process.

The program does everything, such as:
– Purchasing items such as a chair that works for students like Zack or a device for students like Sarah to hold markers. Now, they can finally sit comfortably and draw a picture for their mom.
– Completely revamping a book to make literacy accessible to a child who has a visual impairment or is blind, allowing students like Bobby to learn and access literacy through touch. Now Bobby finally understands why his classmates love the new Dav Pilkey book so much!

Adaptive equipment is instantly life-changing. Annually, 260 K-12 children benefit from this year-round tailored learning support, guaranteeing every child can engage with learning. Your support means more of these underserved students get adaptive equipment and start their learning journey faster!

Project Title: The Family Visitation Program
Project Description:

We request your support to ensure victims of domestic violence and their children have access to the Family Visitation Program (FVP). We are currently at capacity, and unable to serve all families who have been referred to us. Our mission directly addresses these challenges by ensuring the safety of children and victims during the critical times of visitation and exchange. Without the presence of specialized visitation centers like ours, victims and their children face dire consequences: unsafe visitations or exchanges, potential for no contact with a parent, exposure to ongoing violence and conflict, increased stress and risk of further victimization, and the heightened possibility of abuse, neglect, and abduction. Our program seeks to prevent these outcomes by providing a secure and supportive environment for supervised visitations and safe exchanges, fostering positive and healthy relationships even in the wake of family trauma. The recent reductions in national funding for domestic violence services, particularly due to cutbacks in the Victims of Violent Crimes Act, have put these vulnerable populations at even greater risk. Foundation funding is essential for bridging the gap ensuring continuity of crucial services for families affected by domestic violence.

Annually, across all our three locations, we serve an average of 70 families and provide more than 1,000 visits a year.

We have developed a comprehensive approach to supervising visits and supporting parents through what can often be a challenging process. Supervised visits are conducted in a secure, neutral environment designed to foster positive interactions between children and their non-custodial parents. Our team of trained professionals closely monitors these visits to ensure safety and support for all participants. During these sessions, we focus on creating a positive atmosphere where children can engage in meaningful activities with their non-custodial parent, facilitating the development of healthy relationships.

In addition to overseeing the visits, we provide support to parents to help them navigate the visits in a way that is safe and empowering. This includes pre-visit coaching sessions, where we discuss expectations and provide guidance on how to make the most of their time together in a way that prioritizes the child’s well-being. We also offer post-visit debriefings to address any concerns that arose during the visit and to discuss strategies for future interactions. Our goal is to empower parents with the skills and knowledge they need to build and maintain healthy relationships with their children, despite the challenges posed by separation, domestic violence, and past abuse. Through this dual approach of close supervision and proactive support, we aim to create a safe and nurturing environment for families to reconnect and heal.

Project Title: Math Literacy for Underpriviledged 3rd and 4th graders
Project Description:

We are seeking funding for a math skills coaching program which targets underprivileged elementary school students who are not meeting state standards. The program goal is to increase math skills so that students meet or exceed standards within 2 years. Students will receive after school coaching and tutoring 2-4 times per week. IXL software will assess and track student progress so that we can show a measurable impact. An experienced outside group called the Math Agency will train and administer locally recruited volunteers to do the small group coaching. The Math Agency will also help engage with student families. Our PTA is choosing to partner with The Math Agency due to their spectacular results in nearby elementary schools with similar poverty rates and demographics to our own school (https://themathagency.com/). Their methods have been shown to double the rate at which students learn math, which based on past results goes from 0.7 grade levels per year to 1.4 grade levels per year. By enrolling 3rd and 4th graders for 2 years we can ensure these students will meet standards by the time they graduate 5th grade. Volunteers will be recruited from within our school community and will have the full support of our PTA. I will personally volunteer as a math coach if we receive enough funding.
Our school is classified as a Title 1 school with 56% of our children living in low income homes, 14% experiencing homelessness, and 31% learning English. The demographics are a majority-minority school population with 44% white students and the rest a mix of Black/African, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, and others. The impact to our community is clear – these students will have the opportunity to receive much needed supplemental instruction so that they can succeed alongside their more fortunate peers in years to come.

Project Title: The Victory Center – Proven Effectiveness Helping Those With Autism
Project Description:

The Victory Center (TVC) has a legacy of providing hope, education, and opportunities for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. Success has been demonstrated with programs that provide comprehensive educational pathways, tailored vocational training, and multifaceted life skill development. Delivered by educators and behavioral health professionals using therapy-based principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the most scientifically-validated autism intervention, this platform has been called remarkable by parents.

ABA requires intensive student to teacher ratios in order to provide the appropriate dosage of therapy as well as to meet the unique needs of each individual student. TVC today serves 38 children in our school program. This is the highest enrollment level in our school’s history with an ever expanding wait-list in the primary, secondary, and young adult.

We are now at an all-time high in student enrollment because of the outstanding commitment of the dedicated staff of behavioral specialists and their ability to fulfill the needs of our community. We’ve expanded our digital footprint, are engaging with more families through social media and are spreading awareness about autism and the educational and therapeutic opportunities that are available.

Success, however, is often accompanied by challenges as well. Our commitment to low student-to-teacher ratios is driven by our adherence to the therapeutic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. With full classrooms and a growing waitlist in our Primary, Secondary and Adult programs, our staff has had to grow commensurately. Tuition and state aide covers only a portion of what it takes to run our school and to kindle the potential of our aspiring students. Thus is our task to achieve the optimum balance.

The Victory Center takes great pride as students move on to less restrictive programs, graduate from high school and college, and assume outside employment opportunities to achieve their full potential.
