Project Title: Vovk Foundation Stringed Instrument Loan Program and Competiton for Students of Ukrainian heritage
Project Description:
Since the inception of Russia’s unjust and savage war against Ukraine, approximately 4000 schools and related educational buildings have been severely damaged or destroyed, putting the academic future of 5.7 million Ukrainian students at risk (UNESCO). The attacks have also destroyed practice and performance venues, instrument collections, and museums dedicated to the Ukrainian music tradition, thus jeopardizing the dreams of tens of thousands of aspiring music students and leaving the possibility of their continued music education at great risk.
The Vovk Foundation proposes an instrument loan program coupled with a competition for high school and college/university students of Ukrainian origin. In 2023, the Foundation received two gifts of fine stringed instruments, with the request from the donors that these violins and violas be loaned to students of high potential. Vovk will partner with the Ukrainian National Womens’ League of America (UNWLA) to market and administer the initiative. A jury consisting of four professional musicians with established careers will be selected for the competition process. High school/college preparatory students will be judged separately from those enrolled in full time performance degree programs. Students in either track will have the opportunity to compete for 1st/2nd/3rd place awards and those winners will have the opportunity to apply for an instrument loan. Instrument loans will be offered only to the medal winners. All entrants will be required to submit recordings based on the standard repertoire. Finalists will be required to audition before the jury. The award winners’ performances will be recorded, edited, and provided to the winners.
The Foundation will assume insurance, equipment maintenance, and associated expenses. Also, in addition to organizing fundraising events. the Foundation will engage in a marketing and awareness campaign to promote the program to secondary and post-secondary institutions, professional orchestras, chamber music societies, and related organizations.
