Project Title: Strong Foundations for Every Child
Project Description:

The Strong Foundations for Every Child program ensures that children aged 0-12 living in the central Puget Sound region, and participating in an agency partner program, have access to the clothing, supplies, and equipment necessary for their growth and development at home and in school. KidVantage collaborates with a network of 83 agencies, including health and human service organizations, early learning centers, school districts, and food banks, to expand their services and address community, income, and societal disparities. Each week, partners request items customized to a child’s developmental stage, gender identity, cultural background, and family situation, which are then collected from KidVantage for distribution. In 2023, KidVantage assisted 18,049 unique recipients, distributing a total of 224,006 orders. Through these partnerships, KidVantage ensures that caregivers receive precisely what they need to properly care for their children.

By meeting these fundamental needs, partner agencies can redirect their focus to providing additional support services for families facing challenges such as unemployment, domestic violence, or housing instability. Access to practical assistance and services tailored to their needs helps alleviate the stress caused by these challenges, thereby enhancing parental resilience. As emphasized by Harvard University’s Center for the Developing Child (2021), children thrive when their health, safety, and developmental needs are met. Tangible support ensures that children are equipped with the necessary clothing, supplies, and equipment to engage fully in their community, education, playtime, and family life, promoting their physical and mental well-being. When children feel safe, secure, and confident, they are better equipped to develop the essential executive function skills required for successful adulthood.

Tangible support not only benefits caregivers and children by strengthening their inherent abilities and resilience but also reduces chronic family stress, enabling caregivers to better ensure the safety and welfare of their children.

Project Title: Creating Creatives
Project Description:

Creating Creatives is a program offering in-school residencies that combine the expertise of classroom teachers with teaching artists from the theatre world. We will teach 3rd graders in Detroit’s Brightmoor community reading comprehension and retention using theatre. Brightmoor is a low-income, underserved community facing a variety of struggles that the pandemic has exacerbated. Chronic absenteeism and failure to reach grade-level proficiency in reading are major problems. Creating Creatives is tailored to the grade-level reading curriculum requirements as defined by the State of Michigan. Moreover, it provides an attractive, unique reason to attend school.

Local teaching artist, actor, and director, Ariel Pompey, will facilitate the process and work with the students for 90 minutes twice a week from February through May 2025.

Activities:

Book Selection: Our team of experienced educators will work with students to help them select a book that aligns with their grade level and interests. The book will be both entertaining and include social justice themes.

Play Adaptation Workshops: We will organize workshops led by professional playwrights and drama instructors. Students will actively participate in adapting the book’s storyline, characters, and dialogue into a script.

Reading Comprehension Lessons: We will include reading comprehension and retention activities that complement the book’s themes and content. These lessons will include discussions, comprehension quizzes, and creative writing exercises to deepen students’ understanding of the text.

Rehearsals and Performances: Students will practice their roles, develop public speaking abilities, and build confidence in front of an audience. We will host in-school performances for their peers, teachers, and parents to showcase the final production.

Expected outcomes include improved reading comprehension, communication, and retention. We also hope to instill a lifelong passion for theatre and literature. Finally, we expect to see increased confidence and public speaking abilities as well as a lasting impact on their education

Project Title: New Clothes for Homeless & Low-Income Students
Project Description:

The National Giving Alliance (NGA) provides new clothes to homeless and low-income youth. Students who have new clothes to wear are 70% more likely to attend school. Students who do not have appropriate clothes to wear are 7X more likely to miss school and not graduate high school. Students who do not have clothes that are age-, gender-, or seasonally appropriate, or are not the correct size tend to have 12 additional days absent from school. NGA works with school social workers and guidance counselors to give the students whose families are at or below the poverty line the clothes they need to attend school. We give them a week’s worth of complete outfits, which are coordinated to be mixed and matched that are selected specifically for each student based on their age, grade level, clothing size and gender. Our goal is to give youth dignity with new clothes to allow them to go to school with self-confidence. We are removing one more barrier for them so that they may have an opportunity to succeed in school and life.

The bottom line is that clothing insecurity is an ever-present problem that requires immediate action. Currently, there is not any funding for clothing from the federal, state or local government. We know clothing is a basic necessity. Lack of clothing not only exposes youth to potential health and safety risks, but it also makes them feel excluded, invisible, and undervalued among their peers, hindering their socialization and education. We believe that clothing is a basic human right and that every child is worthy of having clothes that make them feel confident and secure. Kids are facing these challenges every single day, and without adequate support, we risk holding back the full potential of the next generation.

Project Title: New Voices Are Rising
Project Description:

New Voices Are Rising empowers disadvantaged BIPOC youth in the Bay Area to drive environmental justice by bridging the nature gap, engaging in hands on field-based learning labs, and connecting them with their community. Led by BIPOC youth from their communities who understand their challenges, New Voices consists of 1) an intensive 6-week Summer Climate Justice Leadership Academy for 25+ low-income BIPOC high school students aged 14-18 from heavily impacted Bay Area communities and 2) a School-Year Fellowship program for 8+ Academy graduates. During the Summer Academy, youth have a chance to get out into their communities and explore pressing environmental issues through nature-based STEAM driven hands-on outdoor learning labs (50%) in collaboration with local partners complemented by group workshops and discussion (50 %); taking 7 one-day field trips and a 2-day overnight camping trip to local green spaces and wild lands where youth get a chance to leave their day to day lives, unplug from screens, have fun, frolic in nature, and observe wildlife while developing new skills, building meaningful relationships, and having an experience of a lifetime. In the school year, motivated participants continue as Fellows, deepening their engagement through independent projects and externships focused on learning and experiences made in the Summer. Each Fellow meets weekly to share information and work on group efforts. Projects engage community members in impactful activities aimed at improving their local environment, from designing plans for more green infrastructure to addressing air quality and climate change. Externships provide real-world exposure, preparing youth for successful career paths. Your support enables underserved Bay Area youth to access transformative outdoor experiences and leadership opportunities, fostering a more equitable future.
