Project Title: Allen Academy Outdoor Classroom, Community Garden and Habitat Restoration
Project Description:

Allen Academy is an independent co-educational day school located in Bryan, Texas that was founded in 1886 by John H. and Rivers O. Allen. The 40-acre campus is located seven miles (11 km) northeast of Texas A&M University and enrolls about 340 students from throughout the Brazos Valley. We are seeking your support to build an outdoor classroom and garden while preserving precious Texas forest, prairie, and watershed including the highly endangered American Elm tree. An outdoor classroom will allow our teachers to conduct lessons in a natural setting, fostering creativity and engagement among our students. It will serve as an ideal space for science classes, nature studies, and environmental education. The garden will serve as a living laboratory, where students can learn about plant life cycles, sustainable gardening practices, and the importance of environmental stewardship. The outdoor classroom and garden will also serve as a gathering space for our school community. It will be open to parents, teachers, and local residents, promoting a sense of togetherness and collaboration.

In this modern age, children’s access to the outdoors has become a precious commodity. Research shows that children who spend more time in natural environments engage in higher levels of physical activity, leading to improved physical fitness and reduced risk of obesity. In addition, numerous studies indicate that exposure to nature has a positive impact on children’s overall emotional well-being through improvements in resilience, reducing stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Likewise, nature experiences have been found to enhance cognitive abilities, including attention, problem-solving skills, creativity, and academic performance in various subjects, such as science, mathematics, and reading comprehension.

Mission Statement: Through excellence in academics, athletics and the arts, and an emphasis on character, Allen Academy empowers students to lead lives of purpose and impact.
