Project Title: Triple Play
Project Description:

Our Mission is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Triple Play is a suite of three targeted programs that work together to promote Healthy Lifestyles. The three programs were intentionally written to build the skills, attitudes, knowledge and behaviors essential to an overall healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating, physical activity and relationship building are addressed in a suite of three easy-to-use resources. Each component is a complete curriculum. Together, they help youth learn to sustain the health of the mind, body and soul. Program includes:
• Triple Play: Healthy Habits- youth members develop positive attitudes toward healthy eating to support a lifetime of healthy decisions.
• Gardening- The gardens provide educational, hands-on education opportunities for youth to learn about farm-to-table eating, nutrition, plant life cycles, and environmental sustainability.
• Cooking Club- Youth learn the basics of cooking through hands-on, supervised instruction. The program focuses on making healthy choices while preparing food as well as learning how to make food from various cultures.

Research has shown that evidence-based foundational skills embedded in healthy eating and physical activity initiatives can lead to outcomes shown in the logical models presented above, resulting in youth who make healthy lifestyle decisions and resulting in social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Project Title: Expanded Arts Access
Project Description:

Expanded Arts Access (EAA) residencies are sequential, arts learning workshops for PreK-12 youth built intentionally for educational communities that experience socio economic hardship, and systemic oppression. They span 12-weeks to a full year, and take place in schools that either qualify as Title 1, or where there are a large percentage of low-income and high needs students (as defined by the MA Dept of Education). We work hard to make regular arts access a reality for communities who want to prioritize arts education but experience greater barriers to the arts due to lack of funding. One school principal commented that the strength of AFLMA’s arts programming is its flexibility. When schools reach out to us, we collaborate with each site partner to design a program that works for them, their budget, and their learning goals, as opposed to coming to a school with a pre planned program that may or not fit with their school structure. Our ability to do so is dependent on the funding we are able to raise, and how much the school or learning center is able to contribute.

What is particularly unique about our programming is that our artists span multiple genres- dance, music, storytelling, theater, media arts, and visual art. We hire teaching artists who are experienced working with, and reflect the cultures of the population they are teaching, and we offer resources and training to help them identify learning differences in order to create accommodation strategies. They are asked to track their progress and seek help as needed. In addition, we also have a yearly cohort of AFLMA artists participating in trauma-informed teaching trainings run by Young Audiences Arts for Learning National. EAA residencies culminate in confidence building final performances or exhibitions where students proudly share their new creative skills with their community.

Project Title: Appel Farm Arts Camp
Project Description:

Appel Farm formally requests a donation from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation for $10,000 to help support disadvantaged youth to attend Appel Farm Arts Camp 2025 on Arts Camp Scholarships. Matched with other funding and tuition income, this grant will support camp operations, enabling Appel Farm to award needs-based scholarships for at-risk and underserved children from New Jersey to participate in an intensive one-week, two-week, or four-week residential arts camp session at Appel Farm and provide them with life changing opportunities.

Appel Farm Arts Camp encourages the growth of self-esteem, skill building, creativity, and a respect for diversity, fostered by an international staff of professional artists and educators. Each summer, we welcome hundreds of campers ages 8-16 to explore the arts on our 115-acre campus in rural Southern NJ. This dynamic overnight program allows students to build social skills and develop peer relationships while combating summer learning loss through activities rooted in National Core Arts Standards. We invite students to disconnect from phones and virtual spaces and be truly present in artmaking. Our creative, inclusive approach infuses unique arts learning with non-traditional opportunities for physical activity, supporting overall wellness and reinforcing our key values of safety, community, personal growth, and fun.

Among its regional peers, Appel Farm is unique in the breadth and depth of experiences it is able to offer. Instruction in artforms like ceramics and analog photography require facilities (e.g. darkroom and ceramics kiln) that are uncommon if not entirely absent from schools in our region. Scholarships ensure that we can provide these tactile artmaking experiences for youth.

Total Project Budget: $1,090,539.00

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Appel Farm Arts Camp is funded through a combination of earned income (tuition fees and camp-related purchases) and contributed income (foundation, government, and individual). PROJECTIONS FOR CAMP FY25 EARNED INCOME (Admissions minus Discounts/Tuition): $968,150 CONTRIBUTED INCOME: $270,191 TOTAL INCOME: $1,238,341 Projected sources of contributed income include: Anne Shore Sleep-Away Summer Camp Benefit – $70,000 (confirmed, amount projected based on enrollment) Christian R. and Mary F. Project Title: Youth Public Arts Project-Greenway Mural
Project Description:

Imagine up to 30 low-income youth working collaboratively to envision and design a major public art project. On funding, Youth Public Arts Project participants from across Pitt County will create a large-scale mural and install it on the Memorial Drive underpass that frames a 9-mile linear park, the Greenway. The underpass is next to public access and faces the Tar River.

The Greenway is a great equalizer, connecting student housing, city parks, a dog park, playgrounds, and neighborhoods. It is adorned with rotating sculptures (facilitated by Emerge) and enhanced by community gardens. Using a BUILD grant, the City will lengthen the Greenway in 2025, continuing it to the VA Hospital and our medical district. (The mural will be installed independently of the expansion schedule.)

Emerge has worked with the City of Greenville and the NC Department of Transportation to install more than 30 public art works in the last 15 years, most recently including the installation of an interactive bus shelter on First Street and a sculpture on DOT property (3/24). Youth Public Arts Project participants created a seven-panel cartoon depicting a multicultural ball game that was installed at a City stadium (5/23). The student-artists were formally recognized by members of the City Council, Police Department, and many of their teachers.

The Youth Public Arts Project was created in 2008 at the request of the 3A Judicial Court and Pitt County Schools to serve “at-risk” youths. Today, we believe that access to high quality music and visual art instruction should be available to all, and to that end, recruit low-income students via our partnerships with the county school system and a foster parent cohort.

Project Title: Advocating for Second Chances for Incarcerated Parents
Project Description:

Texas Defender Service (TDS) seeks support of its new program to advocate for qualified parents seeking parole and support their reentry, improving outcomes for formerly incarcerated individuals, their families, and society. Excessive incarceration hurts our State’s children: Four out of five men and women in Texas prisons are parents of at least one minor child. Half a million Texas children have experienced a parent behind bars. Parents’ incarceration causes severe and lasting damage for the children and families that they leave behind. A father’s incarceration increases a family’s chances of falling into poverty by 40 percent. Children of incarcerated parents are at a heightened risk of becoming justice-involved themselves, and are more likely to drop out of school, become unemployed, and have mental-health problems. Incarceration in Texas has a particularly significant impact on communities of color: Black children are six times as likely as white children to have a parent behind bars.

Often, people serving long sentences aged out of crime long ago. They are ready to be released from prison to be reunited with their families and become caretakers, breadwinners, and community leaders who inspire others to avoid crime.

Given the painful impacts of incarceration, our State should prioritize reuniting people in prison with their families. But in Texas, our parole process does not prioritize either family reunification or second chances. The Texas parole board grants only roughly 35% of the parole applications it receives each year, including those labeled as nonviolent. This is because incarcerated people have no advocates to tell their stories. We know that having an advocate makes a difference: In Texas, parole representation has increased people’s chance of being granted parole from 35% to 80%.

Our program will advocate for qualified parents seeking parole, reuniting them with their children and families.
