Project Title: Youth Public Arts Project-Greenway Mural
Project Description:

Imagine up to 30 low-income youth working collaboratively to envision and design a major public art project. On funding, Youth Public Arts Project participants from across Pitt County will create a large-scale mural and install it on the Memorial Drive underpass that frames a 9-mile linear park, the Greenway. The underpass is next to public access and faces the Tar River.

The Greenway is a great equalizer, connecting student housing, city parks, a dog park, playgrounds, and neighborhoods. It is adorned with rotating sculptures (facilitated by Emerge) and enhanced by community gardens. Using a BUILD grant, the City will lengthen the Greenway in 2025, continuing it to the VA Hospital and our medical district. (The mural will be installed independently of the expansion schedule.)

Emerge has worked with the City of Greenville and the NC Department of Transportation to install more than 30 public art works in the last 15 years, most recently including the installation of an interactive bus shelter on First Street and a sculpture on DOT property (3/24). Youth Public Arts Project participants created a seven-panel cartoon depicting a multicultural ball game that was installed at a City stadium (5/23). The student-artists were formally recognized by members of the City Council, Police Department, and many of their teachers.

The Youth Public Arts Project was created in 2008 at the request of the 3A Judicial Court and Pitt County Schools to serve “at-risk” youths. Today, we believe that access to high quality music and visual art instruction should be available to all, and to that end, recruit low-income students via our partnerships with the county school system and a foster parent cohort.
