Project Title: Individual Sessions
Project Description:

Individual Sessions are 90 minutes twice per month to children and young adults ages 5-18 who have been through traumatic events and other life challenges. Volunteers are equipped and utilized to lead Sessions as mentors. The goal of Individual Sessions is to encourage growth in confidence, trust, and a healthy self-image by guiding, supporting, and encouraging the participant during Ranch activities. Activities include a simple barn chore, grooming, riding, groundwork and Liberty, barn projects, arts and crafts, taking walks on the land, etc.

Participants in Individual Sessions will grow in natural horsemanship and knowledge of how to properly care for horses. Natural horsemanship teaches how to partner with a horse in a supportive and encouraging relationship based on mutual trust. Rescued horses are incorporated into the Program which demonstrates that healing is possible no matter the situation and personal worth is based on your inherent value and not your capabilities nor determined based on your past.

Participants experience improvement in their mental health as working with horses is naturally empowering. They gain the confidence to overcome adversity and persevere when circumstances do not go as planned. Many positive character traits emerge from the relationships with their horse under the direction of a mentor including clear communication, trust, self-awareness, and healthy boundaries. In addition to tangible benefits, working with horses has many emotional benefits including increased feelings of connection, belonging, peace, and joy.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Youth Wellness Program
Project Description:

ATLM is seeking funds to provide psychotherapy services to students ages 16-21 attending local schools and universities in Asheville, North Carolina with the aim to equalize therapy resources and improve mental wellness for underserved populations disproportionately affected by disparities in resource availability and accessibility, social determinants of health, and historic or systemic disinvestment. According to research from the American Psychological Association, child and teen mental health is experiencing a crisis in the wake of COVID-19. During the 10 years leading up to the pandemic, the CDC already noted that feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness, including suicidal thoughts and behaviors, increased by 40% for young people. Further, the National Education Association highlights the mental health crises on college campuses, with rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation reaching an all-time high among students, overwhelming the faculty and staff.

ATLM is proposing to work near or on college and high school campuses to provide mental health awareness pop-ups that offer vital educational outreach on wellness and available services, as well as voluntary, introductory group therapy sessions. We will then invite students to sign up to receive vouchers for psychotherapy with a licensed provider at around 10 fully covered sessions per student. The focus population is minority students, including but not limited to People of Color, women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those with disabilities. Minority-identifying students who choose to seek services after our events will be matched with therapists from our directory who share their identities, backgrounds, and experiences. This process creates a sense of comfort and safety that combats the long-standing fear, distrust, and stigma surrounding the mental health profession for many minority identities in the U.S. by meeting them where they are from a palace of shared understanding.

Today’s Date: 3/27/2024
Requested Amount: $5,700

Project Title: Therapeutic Tools to Help Children Reach Their Full Potential
Project Description:

Cornerstone Center for Early Learning, like The Hermanowski Family Foundation, “improves and transforms the lives of children”. Cornerstone prioritizes economically vulnerable children and their families with an award-winning early childhood education program including wraparound services for the entire family. More than half of Cornerstone children come from households eligible to receive childcare assistance, paying $25 or less per week. While children safely attend Cornerstone, their families are able to focus on employment and higher education opportunities, enabling them to improve their standard of living.

Cornerstone has long ensured that children who are struggling with developmental delays receive the free therapy support they need on-site during hours of care so that no child misses the opportunity to reach their full potential due to financial, time, or transportation constraints. Occupational, Physical, and Speech therapists visit Cornerstone every week to provide individual sessions for over 20% of our children who benefit from these services.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Cornerstone has seen an elevated number of our children struggling with behavioral challenges including anxiety, outbursts, and aggression. Out of necessity, Cornerstone recently began a relationship with Bud to Bloom Play Therapy, a celebrated program that helps to nurture the social and emotional well-being of children, addressing and overcoming challenging behaviors often rooted in trauma. This approach follows the belief that children are inherently moving toward positive growth, and need space and a safe person to do it. This type of therapy promotes self-esteem, self-direction, self-trust and regulation.

The project for which we seek your consideration is to help Cornerstone continue to provide play therapy for our children in 2025, ensuring that every child has access and can receive the interventions needed to improve social-emotional regulation before entering the school system.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 27, 2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Arts Integration in the Arkansas Delta Region
Project Description:

Arkansas Learning Through The Arts (ALTTA) operates under the principle that integrating arts across the curriculum enhances literacy, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills among students, fostering greater self-expression and empathy. Since 2012 our programs have been pivotal in Arkansas schools, particularly in districts lacking access to cultural resources and professional artists, mainly situated in rural and underserved regions. Our workshops, tailored to support and complement the existing curriculum, are designed to enhance literacy and comprehension, as well as to improve testing outcomes. They have garnered positive feedback from both students and educators, citing increased confidence, creativity, and application of skills beyond the workshop setting.
We now aim to extend the impact of our workshops by offering longer residencies, initially targeting five schools in the Delta region of eastern Arkansas where schools face significant resource challenges and school rankings are among the lowest in the state. Each school will host a fifteen-week program led by professional arts educators, ensuring continuity and depth of engagement as well as exposure across a variety of art forms. While maintaining the essence of our short residencies, these extended programs will emphasize sustained learning outcomes.
To assess the effectiveness of the extended workshops, we will document student progress through videography followed by a comprehensive evaluation. We will compare student engagement, student and teacher observations, and test scores to determine the effectiveness of longer-term arts integration. Our commitment extends beyond this funding, as we will cover all program expenses and seek additional support from entities such as the Arkansas Arts Council and private donors to complement the grant awarded by your fund.
Through this initiative, we aspire to empower students in underserved communities with transformative arts experiences, equipping them with valuable skills and perspectives for lifelong learning and success.

Total Project Budget: $45,700

Project Title: Ticket to Discovery
Project Description:

Ticket to Discovery began in 2022 as a low-barrier way to get children excited and curious about reading, and bridge the literacy learning gaps experienced in our community following the coronavirus pandemic. In partnership with Baltimore City’s Enoch Pratt Public Library System, every spring, any elementary-age child (through 5th grade) who has an Enoch Pratt Free Library card may pick up a Ticket to Discovery bookmark at their local branch to track their reading progress. Over the summer, participating children must read five books to complete their bookmark in order to receive up to two complimentary tickets to Port Discovery Children’s Museum. Participating students receive a recommended program reading list, which was compiled and selected in collaboration between Port Discovery educators and Enoch Pratt librarians, organized by age group and developmental appropriateness, and feature themes including cultural diversity, equity, and positive social-emotional health.

Although some facets of everyday life have returned to normal, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic are still being felt in our classrooms. In the 2022-23 school year, only 42% of Maryland kindergartners began the year fully prepared to succeed in school, while 33% of students needed personalized instruction and 26% needed targeted support and interventions (1). Additionally, there was a significant increase in the number of low-income rising kindergarteners – 37% in 2022-23 vs. 27% in 2021-22 – which has historically proven to be a significant inhibitor to kindergarten readiness. There is a pressing need for community support; Port Discovery, in partnership with the Baltimore City Public Library, wants to be part of the solution that promotes literacy and combats learning loss through this unique program that incentivizes summer reading.
