Project Title: CYP’s Teen Career Program
Project Description:
Founded in 1984, CYP’s mission is to improve the long-term life opportunities of at-risk youth using a comprehensive approach aimed at developing their capabilities. Our goal for each child is to complete a higher education degree, providing the opportunity to escape poverty and avoid all the health and social risks associated with living in poverty.
Within our 29 program offerings, CYP’s Teen Career Program supports # high school participants prepare for higher education/training/trade school while providing opportunities to explore career fields. Our teens are paired with mentors and supported by program staff who share their lived experiences navigating higher education and professional endeavors. Program activities include:
– Researching colleges and trade schools, tailored to each participant’s needs
– Workplace site visits
– Career search surveys
– Career presentations from diverse professionals
– College panels featuring CYP program graduates
– Internship placement
– Interview practice
– Resume writing
– College admission test prep
– Completing college and trade School applications
– Exploring financial aid options
– Career mentoring
– College survival/study skills
– Addressing University and professional worksite culture shock
– Weekly tutoring on college campuses and worksites
– Parent sessions and support
CYP exists to serve those youth most in need and least likely to access youth services. To enable easy access to programs, all programs are free and provide free transportation.
Our wraparound program model allows for our program youth to succeed and to achieve their full potential. Our programming has been recognized for long-term engagement (an average of 9 years for high school graduates, who then continue to stay engaged throughout higher education) and data tracking and analytics. Our programming has also been noted for its effectiveness in impacting behaviors and attitudes, including articles in peer-reviewed journals such as BMC Public Health and Pediatrics Annals. College completion and career placement success rates are over five times those of their community peers.
