Project Title: Arts Integration in the Arkansas Delta Region
Project Description:
Arkansas Learning Through The Arts (ALTTA) operates under the principle that integrating arts across the curriculum enhances literacy, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills among students, fostering greater self-expression and empathy. Since 2012 our programs have been pivotal in Arkansas schools, particularly in districts lacking access to cultural resources and professional artists, mainly situated in rural and underserved regions. Our workshops, tailored to support and complement the existing curriculum, are designed to enhance literacy and comprehension, as well as to improve testing outcomes. They have garnered positive feedback from both students and educators, citing increased confidence, creativity, and application of skills beyond the workshop setting.
We now aim to extend the impact of our workshops by offering longer residencies, initially targeting five schools in the Delta region of eastern Arkansas where schools face significant resource challenges and school rankings are among the lowest in the state. Each school will host a fifteen-week program led by professional arts educators, ensuring continuity and depth of engagement as well as exposure across a variety of art forms. While maintaining the essence of our short residencies, these extended programs will emphasize sustained learning outcomes.
To assess the effectiveness of the extended workshops, we will document student progress through videography followed by a comprehensive evaluation. We will compare student engagement, student and teacher observations, and test scores to determine the effectiveness of longer-term arts integration. Our commitment extends beyond this funding, as we will cover all program expenses and seek additional support from entities such as the Arkansas Arts Council and private donors to complement the grant awarded by your fund.
Through this initiative, we aspire to empower students in underserved communities with transformative arts experiences, equipping them with valuable skills and perspectives for lifelong learning and success.
