Project Title: Kokua Foods
Project Description:

Small Things Matter is a grass roots volunteer-run nonprofit that was founded in 2017 by 8th grader Lana Anderson. Our members are intergenerational, come from varying socio-economic background, cis/trans gendered, LGBTQ+, and reflect the diverse community we serve.
Since the pandemic in March 2020, we have consistently rescued, packed, and distributed 1 million pounds of food every year, serving over 5000 youth/young adults ages 0-40 each year.
Kokua is a Hawaiian word meaning "to give selflessly without expectation" and this word guides our Kokua Foods program which serves food insecure children and their families in our community.
The Small Things Matter Kokua Foods team rescues fresh produce from farmers markets, local grocery stores, and food distributors 5 days each week and combines this with purchased produce to provide children and their parents with fresh produce on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. The rescued food accounts for over 50% of the food distributed and keeps it out of the landfills thereby helping the environment as well by reducing green house gases. We also have youth and adult volunteers who make baked goods, casseroles, and sandwiches behind the scenes. The food is packed locally at a nearby grocery store and church (TPSS Coop and the Takoma Park Seventh Day Adventist Church, respectively) and distributed in the community via onsite distributions as well as delivery to disabled individuals. Produce and nonperishable foods are also stored at pantry spaces with freezers and refrigerators at the TPSS Coop and another church, the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church to make sure that the food is kept at the proper conditions, helping extend the life of the food. It is truly a community effort and your funding would be used to ensure that those in need continue to have access to healthy foods.

Project Title: MCS Talks
Project Description:

Supporting a series of book talks with children’s book authors is a dynamic investment in nurturing young minds and fostering a lifelong love for reading. Financial support will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of these events, as it will enable us to compensate authors for their time, expertise, and travel expenses. By covering author fees, we will be able to attract a diverse range of writers, offering our students exposure to various writing styles, perspectives, and genres.

Monetary support will be used for purchasing copies of the authors’ books so that event attendees will not have a fee to participate in the book events encouraging children to engage with literature while supporting authors’ work. Access to high-quality literature through these book talks enriches reading experiences, nurtures critical thinking skills, and promotes empathy and cultural understanding.

Furthermore, supporting a series of book talks cultivates collaboration within the community. Educators, parents and the surrounding community will come together to promote literacy and celebrate the power of storytelling.

In conclusion, backing a series of book talks with children’s book authors is an investment in education, creativity, and community engagement. These book talks will inspire a love for reading and curiosity that can positively shape children’s lives for years to come.

Project Title: "Powerful Choices" for adolescent mental health
Project Description:

The Connecting Youth Achievement Center (CYAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates in the states of Iowa and Indiana. Established in 2020 with the mission to address the critical gap in social-emotional learning (SEL) and academic deficits for neurodivergent black and indigenous elementary and middle schoolers in both urban and rural settings. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these communities, CYAC has provided SEL and academic support to more than 35 students with special needs. We aim to implement the "Powerful Choices" curriculum developed by Ruth Anne Eccles, executive director of Equipping Youth. This evidence-informed curriculum emphasizes building protective factors and fostering healthy decision-making among adolescents to decrease the rates of STIs and other risk behaviors in rural Iowa.

National statistics highlight the glaring lack of equitable optimal health education, like Powerful Choices, for neurodivergent youth, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. According to recent data, neurodivergent individuals are disproportionately affected by social and emotional difficulties, yet resources tailored to their specific needs are scarce. Furthermore, black and indigenous youth often face critical challenges due to systemic inequities, exacerbating their vulnerability.

Through the "Powerful Choices" curriculum, CYAC seeks to empower neurodivergent middle schoolers with essential life skills, emotional regulation techniques, and interpersonal communication strategies. By providing culturally responsive and inclusive SEL programming, CYAC aims to bolster resilience and promote positive mental health outcomes within these communities.

This project aligns with CYAC’s mission to foster holistic development and create pathways to success for neurodivergent youth. By leveraging evidence-informed practices and collaborating with community stakeholders, CYAC endeavors to cultivate environments where all marginalized youth feel valued, supported, and equipped to thrive.

Today’s Date: 2/26/24
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Project Kid Week
Project Description:

Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp in Oregon provides inclusive outdoor experiences for individuals with developmental disabilities. With a 1:1 counselor-camper ratio, our “traditional” camp program caters to diverse needs, fostering independence and offering families respite. Beyond the eight-week summer program, we host Fall and Winter Retreats, a Family Camp, and partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for a family camp. Our capacity for kid week is 56 campers and in 2023, we served 39 kids. We are on our way to getting back to capacity after ensuring we are adequately staffed, for the campers to be supported. Accessibility is a priority, with wheelchair-friendly trails and adaptive equipment ensuring all campers can participate. Camp activities include fishing, ropes course, pool fun, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, campfire, and dancing. Our focus on equity and inclusion involves student counselors from Portland State University, fostering friendships, dispelling misperceptions, and positively impacting lives. In an area where individuals with developmental disabilities lack recreational opportunities, Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp strives to bridge the gap.
Project Kid Week is to help us fund our staffing salaries to provide the most success for the week. Kid week requires extra behavior support and counselors to give extra breaks and support our staff and campers. We see that for most of the kids, it is their first time away from home, families are still fully figuring out their disabilities, and medications, and kids have more energy! We strive for the utmost equity and inclusion to meet all of our campers where their needs are to provide an empowering, independence focused, and fun camp experience.

Total Project Budget: $17,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The execution of this program hinges on securing the necessary funds. As a non-profit dedicated to serving the community, our primary financial support comes from grants. The sustainability of our programs and revenue relies significantly on grant funding. We actively seek out and apply for grants to ensure the optimal functioning of our organization. Throughout the year, we engage in ongoing efforts, utilizing a database to identify suitable grant opportunities. We meticulously assess each opportunity, aligning it with our mission and projects. This involves thorough research into the criteria, past giving history, and priorities of potential funders, culminating in the development of compelling proposals. These endeavors are vital for securing funding to sustain our programming, undertake projects, implement upgrades, overall general operating expenses, and manage utilities. With that being said, we will be seeking funding every year from funders.
