Project Title: Kokua Foods
Project Description:

Small Things Matter is a grass roots volunteer-run nonprofit that was founded in 2017 by 8th grader Lana Anderson. Our members are intergenerational, come from varying socio-economic background, cis/trans gendered, LGBTQ+, and reflect the diverse community we serve.
Since the pandemic in March 2020, we have consistently rescued, packed, and distributed 1 million pounds of food every year, serving over 5000 youth/young adults ages 0-40 each year.
Kokua is a Hawaiian word meaning "to give selflessly without expectation" and this word guides our Kokua Foods program which serves food insecure children and their families in our community.
The Small Things Matter Kokua Foods team rescues fresh produce from farmers markets, local grocery stores, and food distributors 5 days each week and combines this with purchased produce to provide children and their parents with fresh produce on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. The rescued food accounts for over 50% of the food distributed and keeps it out of the landfills thereby helping the environment as well by reducing green house gases. We also have youth and adult volunteers who make baked goods, casseroles, and sandwiches behind the scenes. The food is packed locally at a nearby grocery store and church (TPSS Coop and the Takoma Park Seventh Day Adventist Church, respectively) and distributed in the community via onsite distributions as well as delivery to disabled individuals. Produce and nonperishable foods are also stored at pantry spaces with freezers and refrigerators at the TPSS Coop and another church, the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church to make sure that the food is kept at the proper conditions, helping extend the life of the food. It is truly a community effort and your funding would be used to ensure that those in need continue to have access to healthy foods.
