Project Title: HIPPY – Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters
Project Description:

The Community Students Learning Center (CSLC) is a nonprofit organization that provides multiple programs for children, youth, families, and seniors in Holmes County, Mississippi, and surrounding areas. Primarily serving low-income families, it offers early childhood learning in Holmes and Hinds County. We are seeking funding to support our HIPPY program.
HIPPY is a research-based program that prepares kids to enter school ready to learn. However, with additional funding, we can efficiently serve more kids.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of efficient early childhood and parental involvement programs in Holmes County, Mississippi, an extremely high number of vulnerable children enter kindergarten and first grade unprepared for school.
To prepare children to enter school, we must change strategies: If awarded funding, CSLC will: 1. Expand our Home Visitation Early Childhood Literacy Program to reach more parents of kids of color 2. Utilizes HIPPY’s research-based program to work with families of 3, 4, and 5-year-olds in the home to support parents in their critical role as their child’s first and most influential teachers for school readiness 3. Engage community leaders and stakeholders on the importance of the effectiveness of this early literacy program 4. Crate optimal formal and informal learning environments & system 5. Racialized learning inequities for children

Project Title: Free music lessons for underserved kids
Project Description:

Empowering economically underserved children by breaking down the barriers
of financial challenges, ensuring every child has access to the transformative benefits of
early-age music education.
To foster a robust organization capable of replication in other
underserved communities within Galveston County school districts.
From its inception, the goal of the Dickinson Music Enrichment Center has been to offer
a completely free after-school music program for underserved students in grades 4-6
(ages 9-12). Additionally, we provide free instruments for students who continue the
program and enroll in band in the 6 th grade, which is the earliest you participate in the
band program in grade school. The free lessons will continue through middle school and
high school for those students that may need additional instruction to improve their
technique and sound quality.
Established in 2021, the founders spent 12 months posturing and preparing to launch
their vision. Through the help of a grant in 2022 from the Dickinson Management
District, the use of space at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Dickinson, and the support
of many individual and corporate sponsors, in the fall of 2023, the program launched
with a total of 15 students. The students are mentored and coached by 11 th and 12 th
grade students at Dickinson Sr. High School, who serve as section leaders with the
Dickinson ISD band program. The coaches are paid positions. We find this type of
structure for our students provides good mentorship experience and helps our older
students who are hoping to increase their opportunities of band scholarships at the
university level. In the current 2023-24 school year, the program has 9 student
coaches/mentors.
The goal of The Dickinson Music Enrichment Foundation is to provide an opportunity for
all children, even those facing economic challenges, to access and participate in a
music curriculum.
