Project Title: Reading Support Program
Project Description:
Through its partnership with Reading Partners Baltimore, Leader Breeders provides reading support
(tutoring, reading support, and reading development) to elementary/middle school students at
elementary/middle schools and community centers in Baltimore, Maryland. Our program is based on the
belief that reading is the gateway to dreams for children. Our program supports youth at an early age to
improve fundamental reading skills.
Leader Breeders services youth in Baltimore City. Baltimore City is Maryland’s largest City and has the state’s
fifth-largest school system, with 156 schools and 77,807 students. A recent report from the Maryland State
Department of Education showed that 90% of Baltimore City Public School students are not proficient in
math, and about 90% of elementary school students are not proficient in English and Reading. Baltimore
City’s student population is 75.7% Black, 14.2% Hispanic/Latino, 7.5% White, .08% Asian, .02% American
Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. Baltimore Youth are 22.1% more
likely to experience family disorder leading to divorce/separation; 13.2% have been victims of or witnesses
to neighborhood violence; 8.6% have witnessed domestic violence; 6.4% have
been treated or judged unfairly due to race/ethnicity; and 56% have had one or more of all of the ACEs listed
above. Many of our students do not have the home support needed to develop their reading comprehension
skills at the crucial elementary level. Leader Breeders Reading was created to meet the gap at this crucial
time in our youth’s early childhood reading skills development.
