Project Title: Health Hub
Project Description:

The CHMRC Health Hub serves as a comprehensive bridge to health equity for these underserved populations. In 2023, we laucnehd the Health Hub that operate on a calendar year from January to December. We collaborate with public health partners, local community-based organizations, and faith-based organizations to provide community members wellness programs, health workshops, and support groups on weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm. We aim to serve some 1,000 program participants including youth and adults from underserved immigrant and minority populations.
Our Health Hub programs are implemented by two highly skilled and dedicated Community Resilience Coordinators. Our coordinators serve the community, provide culturally and linguistically appropriate health information, and establish trust by engaging with families and identifying their barriers and health concerns. Weekly, the coordinators outreach to potential community partners and coordinate community events and workshops to promote health education and resilience-building skills. They provide vaccinations, health screenings, chronic disease management, and crucial support groups like parenting and babysitting classes. Workforce readiness training and mental health resources empower individuals to build a healthy future. Through collaborative partnerships, we equip them with knowledge, tools, and referral services to navigate local resources and connect with learning opportunities.

Our impact extends beyond health education. We alleviate immediate burdens with food bags, clothing, and hygiene kits, allowing individuals to focus on their health and well-being. The Hub also fosters community connections: local organizations utilize our platform to connect with health and wellness resources, strengthening the safety net for all.

The Health Hub removes barriers to health and wellness and equips individuals with the knowledge and tools to make informed choices for themselves and their families.

Project Title: Mental health support & Job training for youth involved in the Juvenile Court
Project Description:

After 5+ years working alongside the Kent County Juvenile Court in the role of community service job site, I
have seen more and more youth enter the system. Over the last couple of years my husband and myself are
preparing to open a clothing resale store where our staff are youth working on job training skills. The numbers
are rising at an alarming rate for so many reasons. Over the last year, I have begun to build relationships with
youth, probation officers, youth program leaders, and juvenile justice leaders. There are needs greater than
what are being offered based on conversations with the Sheriff and leaders of the judicial system. Out of these
conversations people are rising up to change the culture of our community and offer support for the youth that
are turning to gangs and illegal activities to fill the voids in their young lives. Court directed programs are
supporting youth. The needs include high school completion support, vocational job shadowing and training,
male mentors, entrepreneurial skills, but most of all goal setting accountability and responsibility training. There
will be weekly opportunities for youth to have access to mental health clinicians, mentors, tutoring, vocational job
shadowing, and skills based programs. Through the relationships and opportunities, the youth will improve their
own self esteem, set goals, but become responsible, reliable young men to themselves, their families, and their
communities.
On site youth will be learning HVAC skills, auto detailing, oil change, brake changes, retail job training, and
gardening. Other skills will be taught and experiences off site. The basic auto maintenance will be donated back
to the community working with LOVE INC on Kent County to provide support for families by checking fluids,
filling, changing brake pads and possible rotors, and oil change.

Today’s Date: 5 February 2024
Requested Amount: 1,000

Project Title: Innovative Approach to Literacy
Project Description:

Books in Every Bag is a free literacy program for all children from birth to five years of age in the Quad-County Charleston, South Carolina, metropolitan area, with the mission to prepare children for kindergarten. The focus is on newborns and preschoolers from lower SES and ELL families and enrollment initiatives are concentrated on these demographics. Children participating in the program receive a free bookstore quality, age-specific book provided at birth and subsequently one is sent in the child’s name, to their home or care facility every month until their fifth birthday. With each book parents receive a newsletter sharing literacy information related to the child’s development and tips on how to best read to the child to stimulate comprehension and increase the enjoyment of reading together.
Since inception as a 501(c)3 in August 2022 over 1,100 children have enrolled in the program. A proposed 5-year study is under review by the Board of Directors which would establish metrics to validate the program which could be used to enhance preparedness of children entering kindergarten, gain greater understanding of the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of young children, and establish more robust dialogue and communications between and among stakeholders in the non-profit and public-school early literacy communities. Dr. Linda Bone, Professor Emeritus, Charleston Southern University, would provide technical assistance in the form of research-based evaluation design, implementation, and program analysis. Congressional funding is being sought but additional funding sources are needed in the short term to continue to increase enrollments and gain additional momentum.
The research base for this keynote draws from four areas: 1) Research on the effects of poverty on literacy and brain development. 2) Data on the impact of literacy interventions and reading aloud on the K-5 readiness of young children. 3) Information on the most effective and appropriate strategies for encouraging a culture of family literacy as it nurtures brain development and early childhood experiences; 4) Dr. Bone’s LEAP Model from the book “Rich
Brain/Poor Brain”, a study of the importance of coordinating Language, Experiences, Attitudes, and Performances to bridge social and synaptic gaps in learning.

The organizations need funds for capital items which allow the volunteers and staff to be compensated by other funding opportunities. The mission of Benevolent Hearts is to encourage and enable youth to become positive, responsible, and contributing members of the local community by “Touching One Heart at A Time”. Benevolent Hearts, Incorporated is located at 6516 Elmore Road in Little Rock, Arkansas. For all its challenges, southwest Little Rock (SWLR) remains a vibrant community, younger than much of the rest of the city with a large number of young children. According to the Arkansas Economic Development Commission SWLR is home to 37,976 people. Sixty-three percent of the population is black compared with 43% in greater Little Rock. Its Hispanic population makes up 12% of the community compared with 3% in greater Little Rock. The mix gives SWLR a “unique combination of cultures, customs, faith and families.” Many Little Rock residents have the belief that SWLR is a dangerous, dirty and destitute part of the City and has been both economically and emotionally devastated. Benevolent Hearts has identified three risk factors among the youth in SWLR: Alienation and rebelliousness and friends who engage in problem behavior.
