Project Title: Mental health support & Job training for youth involved in the Juvenile Court
Project Description:
After 5+ years working alongside the Kent County Juvenile Court in the role of community service job site, I
have seen more and more youth enter the system. Over the last couple of years my husband and myself are
preparing to open a clothing resale store where our staff are youth working on job training skills. The numbers
are rising at an alarming rate for so many reasons. Over the last year, I have begun to build relationships with
youth, probation officers, youth program leaders, and juvenile justice leaders. There are needs greater than
what are being offered based on conversations with the Sheriff and leaders of the judicial system. Out of these
conversations people are rising up to change the culture of our community and offer support for the youth that
are turning to gangs and illegal activities to fill the voids in their young lives. Court directed programs are
supporting youth. The needs include high school completion support, vocational job shadowing and training,
male mentors, entrepreneurial skills, but most of all goal setting accountability and responsibility training. There
will be weekly opportunities for youth to have access to mental health clinicians, mentors, tutoring, vocational job
shadowing, and skills based programs. Through the relationships and opportunities, the youth will improve their
own self esteem, set goals, but become responsible, reliable young men to themselves, their families, and their
communities.
On site youth will be learning HVAC skills, auto detailing, oil change, brake changes, retail job training, and
gardening. Other skills will be taught and experiences off site. The basic auto maintenance will be donated back
to the community working with LOVE INC on Kent County to provide support for families by checking fluids,
filling, changing brake pads and possible rotors, and oil change.
