Today’s Date: 2/28/2024
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Caregiving Youth Project
Project Description:

The first national research in the United States (US) on youth caregivers, reported in September 2005, shows that more than 1.3 million children in the United States, ranging from age 8 to 18, care for ill or disabled parents, grandparents, siblings, and other relatives. Fulfilling their dual role as students and caregivers is compromised by missing school or after school activities, an inability to complete homework, and an increased risk of dropping out of school to care for their care recipient. The Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) began in 2006 as the first program in the US to identify and support Caregiving Youth by utilizing a three-pronged integrated approach within the systems of healthcare, education, and the community.

The grant we seek is to continue the provision of effective interventions, services, and educational tools that support the psychosocial, developmental, emotional, and physical health and well-being of students who are also caregivers. Currently, the CYP works with Caregiving Youth who attend 35 middle and high schools in which it begins its in-school direct services. There are also students who receive support in 22 other schools which lack the in-school component.

In addition to in-school Skills Building groups, Lunch and Learn sessions, and individual supportive counseling, the AACY Family Specialists conduct home assessments to determine other needs in the home that can strengthen the family and reduce stress on the child. These services include but are not limited to respite, tutoring, mentorship, and special projects. Sponsored activities allow Caregiving Youth to meet peers from other schools and have time to have fun.

A major outcome of the CYP services over time includes a nine year high school graduation rate of 98.5%, with most going on to post-secondary education or the military.

Project Title: I AM Academy
Project Description:

The I Am Academy aims to provide a multifaceted approach to empower at-risk youth, promote personal growth, and strengthen community bonds with local organizations, including law enforcement. At Truly Valued, we believe in fostering collaboration between law enforcement and the community to create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone. Our approach involves the following key elements:

• Community Engagement: We actively involve community members, including parents, teachers, local businesses, and law enforcement, in the planning and execution of the program. Their input and support are vital to building a strong foundation for positive change.
• Trauma-Informed Care: Recognizing that some of the at-risk youth may have experienced trauma, our program is carefully designed with a trauma-informed approach to provide a safe and supportive space for healing and growth.
• Data-Driven Evaluation: Understanding that our program’s goal is to produce real-world results for our participants, we regularly assess and evaluate the program’s impact through data collection and feedback mechanisms. This data-driven approach actively enables us to make evidence-based adjustments and improvements to maximize the program’s effectiveness.

To ensure the effectiveness of the program, Truly Valued conducts ongoing evaluations, both qualitative and quantitative, to measure participants’ progress, assess the impact of the curricula, and identify areas for improvement. The measure of success for I Am Academy participants lies in observing positive behavior changes in at least two of the four pillars: building character, confidence, education opportunities, and self-esteem and awareness, with a target goal of 80% of participants demonstrating such growth. As of February 2024, student behavior referrals have decreased 40% compared to the first semester, this is attributed to students making positive choices and exhibiting leadership qualities.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 02/27/2024
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: 2024 Connection, Education, Advancement with and for SADS Families
Project Description:

The SADS Foundation exists to save the lives and support the families of children and young adults who are genetically predisposed to sudden death due to heart rhythm abnormalities through the four pillars of Awareness & Prevention, Patient & Family Support, Medical Education, and Research & Advocacy.
Fast, irregular heartbeats caused by SADS conditions can prevent a child from getting the necessary level of oxygen-rich blood which results in fainting or a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SADS conditions are an inherited genetic mutation passed down from a family member. Children with a parent or sibling who has SADS have a 50% chance of having it. Experts estimate these arrhythmias are found in about 1 in 7,000 young people and cause about 4,000 sudden deaths each year.
Our most important service is supporting families who have just found out their child/ren have SADS. Many families come to us after a young family member has survived or passed away from a SCA. Families require many services as they learn to live and thrive with SADS. During the first period of finding answers, families may need to know how to obtain a blood sample from the medical examiner, what cardiac specialist is right for them, details of insurance coverage, the steps of genetic testing, and what precautions need to be taken. And just as importantly, families need emotional support during the scary process of learning how to appropriately manage their child’s condition.

We provide families with the critical and compassionate support to take them through each step of navigating their child’s journey. We educate families to participate in their child’s care and make the most-informed decisions possible as well as connect them with other families so they may share mutual experiences. Empowerment leads to the entire family living their best lives.

Project Title: Equine-assisted services for people with disabilities
Project Description:

Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center is a community where horses transform the bodies, minds, and spirits of people with disabilities. Our purpose is to help children, young adults, and adults with disabilities build skills for independence, improve daily functioning, and overcome physical, emotional, and cognitive health challenges. Little Bit provides equine-assisted services including Therapy (physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy), Adaptive Riding, mental health, and Horsemanship programming year-round, six days per week, to over 500 individuals annually. Nearly 100 different diagnoses are represented, with sixty-seven percent of participants having more than one diagnosis. The most frequently seen diagnoses include autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays. Equine-assisted services are increasingly recognized as invaluable tools to improve quality of life and provide therapeutic and recreational benefits for people with disabilities. Little Bit’s services often lead to dramatic improvements in physical, emotional, and social well-being, allowing participants to overcome barriers to reaching their individual goals and the greatest independence possible, while promoting greater inclusion into the community. If awarded, funding would provide general operating support, which allows us to offset the cost of program services for our participants by reducing our overall expenses. This allows us to offer a reduced participant fee to all program families, currently less than 40 percent of the actual program cost. We provide tuition aid for families with demonstrated financial need who are unable to afford the reduced program fees.
