Project Title: Equine-assisted services for people with disabilities
Project Description:

Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center is a community where horses transform the bodies, minds, and spirits of people with disabilities. Our purpose is to help children, young adults, and adults with disabilities build skills for independence, improve daily functioning, and overcome physical, emotional, and cognitive health challenges. Little Bit provides equine-assisted services including Therapy (physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy), Adaptive Riding, mental health, and Horsemanship programming year-round, six days per week, to over 500 individuals annually. Nearly 100 different diagnoses are represented, with sixty-seven percent of participants having more than one diagnosis. The most frequently seen diagnoses include autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorders, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays. Equine-assisted services are increasingly recognized as invaluable tools to improve quality of life and provide therapeutic and recreational benefits for people with disabilities. Little Bit’s services often lead to dramatic improvements in physical, emotional, and social well-being, allowing participants to overcome barriers to reaching their individual goals and the greatest independence possible, while promoting greater inclusion into the community. If awarded, funding would provide general operating support, which allows us to offset the cost of program services for our participants by reducing our overall expenses. This allows us to offer a reduced participant fee to all program families, currently less than 40 percent of the actual program cost. We provide tuition aid for families with demonstrated financial need who are unable to afford the reduced program fees.

“{Little Bit} helps with social skills, confidence, self-esteem, strength, life enjoyment, and purpose.” – Parent of a Little Bit participant
