Project Title: Spotlight Academy: Performing Arts for Middle Schoolers with Disabilities
Project Description:

In the heart of Atlanta, something extraordinary is taking shape – and it’s unprecedented! SHOWAbility is illuminating a transformative 5-year pilot program with progressive phases that offer not just music and acting experiences, but a profound journey towards self-discovery, empowerment, and dreams realized for 6th-8th graders. “SPOTLIGHT: Music and Acting Enrichment Academy for Middle School Students with Disabilities” challenges stereotypes, transcends limits, and shines a light on the immense potential within every young artist using a curriculum that’s as diverse as the students’ talents.

Led by professional artists; developed by academic professionals; supported by inclusivity coaches, assistive technology, and individualized accommodations; grounded in and utilizing ongoing sound research practices, and teaching advocacy training, SHOWAbility is creating an afterschool/weekend hybrid Saturday school program model of inclusivity in the performing arts that will expand beyond Atlanta into other parts of the state, region, and beyond. Each year, our target group students will expand to include more diverse complexities as we grow our capacity to satisfy more uniquenesses.

Our goal: change the trajectory of disabled students’ lives by empowering them to confidently face down the social inequities in their pathway toward artistic performance. Imagine a world where differences aren’t barriers, but sources of strength. Just imagine.

Grant Request for: General Operating Support to Respond to Community Needs

CAC’s grant request of $10,000 will support the purchase of arts materials and supplies needed to continue to deliver and grow our arts education programs – specifically our tuition-based classes and workshops that are not grant funded. Arts materials include; paint, clay, sketch books, costumes, supplies for STEAM, and related activities such as batteries, robotics, wood, blocks, cardboard, nails/screws, and levers, etc. CAC strives to keep our tuition-based classes affordable to ensure accessibility for all students which means only a small arts materials fee is embedded in each class price.

Expand “Arts on the Road” programs that will provide one-time, pop-up, or ongoing arts classes in local community centers, libraries, clubs, and other locations throughout the County to offer students access to quality arts experiences in their own neighborhoods.

CAC’s 2024-2026 strategic plan goals:
Goal A: Empower children and adults of all ages, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities to experience varied and meaningful arts opportunities.
Goal B: Foster and develop partnerships with artists, community organizations, schools, donors, and partners to enhance our capacity for greater impact
Goal C: Optimize CAC operations for greater effectiveness, efficiency, and impact.

Project Title: Bullying Stoppers Basketball Tournament
Project Description:

We ask ourselves why so many children are fighting, seem disrespectful to others, are battling depression, or even taking their own lives. The increase in violence and bullying may be a cry for help. We believe most children just want to feel safe and be heard. Building families and communities allows our children to have that sense of safety. It is important to educate families and youth about the connection between bullying, mental stress, depression, and violence as well as the effects it can have on you as an adult if it’s not addressed. Kings Way International is hosting a Bullying Stoppers Basketball Tournament" that will combine education and community engagement to bring awareness to the effects of bullying and why a person may be bullying someone else. We are engaging individuals and organizations like you to partner with us to reconnect families and build communities. We are inviting youth basketball teams across the state to participate in two-day basketball tournament that will provide information and resources to those attending while building character, teamwork, and confidence in those who are being bullied or are doing the bullying. The knowledge that our speakers give will help our families recognize what bullying is and how to get help they need. The tournament will take place prior to students going back to school so they will take the information with them to the varies schools they attend across New Jersey. Parent engagement is just as important to have success so they are receiving the same information at the same time to reinforce what was learned.

Project Description:

Our program, Project G.R.A.P.E., provides easy-to-understand education for our youth participants to allow them to connect biology, ecology and economic topics to the everyday functions of adult life. The purpose of the Project G.R.A.P.E. program is to teach youth in local communities how to grow produce in their community, how to live a well sustained life (educationally, physically and emotionally), and how to become a dedicated community member through leadership and volunteerism. In regards to our Project G.R.A.P.E. program, we utilize three core goals the program strives to accomplish: 1.) help 700 people in the Atlanta area and surrounding communities, 2.) teach 650 children the importance of gardening, and 3.) recover at least 300 pounds of produce.
Project G.R.A.P.E. provides education to youth participants through hands-on gardening activities and lessons based on: understanding where and how grocery stores attain produce, food technology, research areas related to food insecurity and its effects on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities and low-income households, money management and creating a sustainable lifestyle with limited resources.
