Project Title: Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP)
Project Description:

In order to better align ourselves with our vision (“To be the world’s greatest incubator and network of innovators, creatives and entrepreneurs dedicated to ending all forms of human trafficking and modern day slavery”), we have developed a program specific to prevention among the youth in our community. Therefore, the purpose of this program is to reduce vulnerabilities for human trafficking among at-risk youth through job training and skills development education. The monies from this grant will be used for materials and supplies necessary for this 12-week program, including course materials and resources, catering for in-person courses, background checks for mentors, and more.
Over a 12-week cycle, our Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) will serve 25 unhoused youth, youth that are not currently enrolled in school, and/or youth that are unemployed in the United States by teaching skills to prepare them for the workforce, trade careers, and entrepreneurial endeavors. We will provide this program 2-3 times a year. YEP encompasses 3 segments which participants will choose 1 to enroll in during the 12-week period. These include work-readiness, entrepreneurship/business incorporation, and trade training/certifications.
Our extensive and engaging curriculum will provide job training and skills development through extensive and engaging content. Participants will include youth between the ages of 14-24 and identify with a vulnerable and/or marginalized category. By providing this curriculum to at-risk youth, we can increase employment and emotional intelligence among youth participants, which will prevent/reduce participants’ financial and emotional dependence on unscrupulous actors, and, subsequently, their risk for human trafficking, and related vulnerable conditions, like poverty.

Support from your foundation will allow us to continue our Youth Entrepreneurship Program with the momentum it deserves and deliver it in the most meaningful way for long-term impact.

Project Title: Anti-trafficking education
Project Description:

Lifeway Network’s anti-trafficking education program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at raising awareness, preventing human trafficking, and providing support for survivors. Lifeway Network, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to combating human trafficking through education, safe housing, and community involvement.

The education program encompasses a multifaceted approach, starting with community outreach and awareness campaigns. Lifeway Network conducts workshops, seminars, and training sessions to educate various audiences, including students, professionals, and community members, about the realities of human trafficking, its signs, and how to prevent it. By fostering a deeper understanding of the issue, the program empowers individuals to recognize and respond to potential trafficking situations.

Furthermore, Lifeway Network collaborates with schools, businesses, and community organizations to implement prevention strategies. This involves educating vulnerable populations on their rights and creating a network of informed individuals who can act as advocates against human trafficking.

In addition to prevention efforts, Lifeway Network’s education program includes support for survivors. Training sessions for service providers, law enforcement, and healthcare professionals equip them with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively identify and assist trafficking survivors. The program emphasizes a survivor-centered approach, recognizing the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals who have experienced trafficking.

By combining prevention, awareness, and survivor support, Lifeway Network’s anti-trafficking education program contributes to the broader fight against human trafficking, creating a more informed and engaged community that actively works towards eradicating this heinous crime.

Project Title: Backpack Drive & Family Fun Fest
Project Description:

Asking for help requires courage! A diligent mother or father, working hard but still facing financial difficulties in sending their children back to school, deserves support. They should not experience shame or humiliation for needing extra help.

Rays of Light Philanthropic serves as a feeder Non-Profit Organization (NPO) via partnerships with the following local organizations: Door of Hope, Inner Circle Foster Care, and Union Rescue Mission. Our aim is to improve the quality of life for homeless and foster children, youth and teens through the procurement and distribution of high-quality basic needs items.

Annually, we host a Backpack Drive & Family Fun Fest event, a carnival style event with food, games, bounce houses, music & prizes. We distribute brand new, supply-filled backpacks to the children, youth, and teens in the care of our partners and local low-income students in need. However, in 2017 we expanded the scope of our initiative to include the distribution of new & gently used clothing and shoes. We enlisted the expertise of volunteer style coaches to ensure each student had a complete look to return to school.

We believe basic need items instill hope, bolster confidence, build self-esteem that can translate to improved performance in the classroom. Students who excel academically are more likely to be valued contributors to our society and ultimately realize the value in helping others.

Project Title: Literacy Impact Program
Project Description:

CHANCE’s Literacy Impact Program functions through mentorship, education & restorative practices to build up and encourage young adults to reach their educational goals. Due to the decrease in English Language Arts (ELA) scores for 3rd and 4th graders over the last three years in Michigan, this project will specifically target that age group as well as the older population of students between the ages of 17-24 years old. This age group is important in the literacy impact program because by building up and encouraging the young adults within the community of our county and state, we will positively impact decreases in crime while increasing high school graduation rates. Furthermore, our mentorship program has a direct positive effect on the decrease of mass incarceration which will in turn decrease recidivism. As a result of CHANCE’s Literacy Impact Program, we are contributing to the increase of well rounded, educated young people in our community.

The Literacy Impact Program will cultivate hope by offering mentorship, reading programs, and life skills coaching to students who are in grades K-12. We will offer after-school programs to students that are below reading proficiency level. In addition to life skills coaching, the 17-24 age group will also be offered vocational training, employment resources, and parenting workshops. The funds requested in this grant will go directly toward books, reading instructional materials, reading software upgrades, educational training material, Chromebooks, tablets, educational games, and workshop facilitation materials.
