Project Title: Literacy Impact Program
Project Description:
CHANCE’s Literacy Impact Program functions through mentorship, education & restorative practices to build up and encourage young adults to reach their educational goals. Due to the decrease in English Language Arts (ELA) scores for 3rd and 4th graders over the last three years in Michigan, this project will specifically target that age group as well as the older population of students between the ages of 17-24 years old. This age group is important in the literacy impact program because by building up and encouraging the young adults within the community of our county and state, we will positively impact decreases in crime while increasing high school graduation rates. Furthermore, our mentorship program has a direct positive effect on the decrease of mass incarceration which will in turn decrease recidivism. As a result of CHANCE’s Literacy Impact Program, we are contributing to the increase of well rounded, educated young people in our community.
The Literacy Impact Program will cultivate hope by offering mentorship, reading programs, and life skills coaching to students who are in grades K-12. We will offer after-school programs to students that are below reading proficiency level. In addition to life skills coaching, the 17-24 age group will also be offered vocational training, employment resources, and parenting workshops. The funds requested in this grant will go directly toward books, reading instructional materials, reading software upgrades, educational training material, Chromebooks, tablets, educational games, and workshop facilitation materials.
