Today’s Date: 1/18/2024
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Increased Access of Donor Milk for Newborn Babies and Infants
Project Description:

The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) was established in 1990 to provide oversight, guidance, and standardized testing procedures around the donation of human milk. Additionally, the organization worked to build public confidence in the use of safe, pasteurized human milk (PDHM) for pre-term and medically fragile babies and infants. Prior to the organization’s establishment, efforts were disparate across the US. HMBANA is the United States’ only nonprofit organization that accredits and standardizes donor milk collection, testing, pasteurization, and distribution specifically for medically fragile babies and preterm births. In 2022, the total ounces of donor milk distributed through HMBANA’s network of 32 member milk banks rose by 8.4% to 9.9 million ounces throughout North America.

HMBANA’s mission not only saves the lives of newborn babies and infants, but it also reduces the cost of care and improves outcomes for health systems. Significant prematurity and very low birth weight are two of the most expensive diagnoses in pediatric care. An Institute of Medicine (IOM) study, one of the largest reviews of its kind, identified preterm birth as a leading cause of neonatal morbidity, and disability resulting in an annual overall cost in the United States of at least $26 billion. The use of donor milk is not only essential to the healthcare of some of the most fragile individuals in our society, but it is also a widely available, cost-effective resource.

HMBANA is the only organization in North America working to increase access to donor milk while addressing the systemic disparities in access across the country. While the organization relies on membership revenue to facilitate its work, there are unmet needs across North America, specifically related to the alleviation of racial disparities in access to PDHM. Grant funding will have a substantial overall impact on the organization and its ability to advance its mission and achieve its stated goals ultimately saving the lives of pre-term and medically fragile babies.

Project Title: Creativity Cell
Project Description:

The Creativity Shell is a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative arts programs as a medium to teach life, practical, fundamental and positive mental health skills to the next generation of makers. Our organization teaches classes such as sewing, textile arts, cooking, ceramics, STEM and other creative trades to students in our studios, libraries, schools, ABA therapy centers, the juvenile justice system as well as shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking.

From our history of working in shelters that rescue youth human trafficking survivors, we believe that building confidence and self esteem in our children is the best medicine towards boosting positive mental health. In 2024, we want to expand our programs into more juvenile detention facilities across the Houston area where empty prison cells will be converted into sewing, pottery, hydrophobic vegetable gardens and art rooms while the open space on the floor will be transformed into a kitchen. This Creativity Shell floor will offer a near full time schedule of classes and the organization hopes their classes will help offer cooking, sewing, art, pottery, indoor gardening, crochet and other practical life skills classes to incarcerated children at the facility.

Project Title: Weekend Food Assistance for Children
Project Description:

Cocoa Packs purpose is to distribute nutritious food to any child experiencing food insecurity in conjunction with providing the love and support to facilitate the success of that child.

Cocoa Packs is a weekend food assistance program providing weekly food packs filled with non-perishable food items, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, frozen fish and poultry and fresh food from local food rescue partners to 1,400 children from birth through 12th grade across 25 different school districts and five counties in South Central Pennsylvania (Dauphin, Lancaster, York, Cumberland and Lebanon).

In addition to weekly food packs, children actively enrolled have access to our extension services (clothing, shoes, hygiene products, distribution of new socks and underwear, new backpacks filled with school supplies, new winter coats and accessories and so much more) which contribute to enhancing their overall emotional and physical wellbeing.

School-based programs can provide subsidized nutritious meals during the school day; however, this leaves a gap on the weekends, over the holidays and in the summer. The remaining 185 days of the year, those children facing food insecurity are truly vulnerable in their access to food.

Cocoa Packs was founded in 2015 and has grown from assisting 92 children a week to now over 1,400 children. These children are identified as food insecure through food subsidization lists at schools, social workers, school counselor identification and self or parental referrals. All children are eligible to be enrolled and can be done via Cocoa Packs website.

Note from a mother: “Your kindness knows no bounds and your generosity is never ending. You have helped put food in my daughter’s belly, helped me to get a job, provided gifts for the holiday and so much more! Cocoa Packs is a blessing to the community, the school and to me.”

Project Title: Gamers Outreach Karts: Healing Play for Hospitalized Children in Florida
Project Description:

Hundreds of thousands of children in Florida are hospitalized annually. The process leads to increased stress, feelings of loneliness, and diminished emotional states–factors that interfere with the healing process. During hospitalization, kids need an outlet for play to improve overall well-being. Play is proven to help heal, reduce patient stays, and ultimately allows kids to thrive. While hospitals excel in providing medical care, they aren’t always equipped with scalable platforms for play.

We’re uniquely positioned to make a difference in the lives and health of hospitalized children in Florida. We partner with hospitals to implement an innovative program in pediatric units called Gamers Outreach Karts (“GO Karts”). GO Karts transform and improve the lives of young patients. They are portable, all-in-one, medical-grade video game kiosks that offer healing play. GO Karts include age-appropriate games curated to encourage cognitive growth (e.g., world-building games and puzzle games) and foster social connection (e.g., two-player games that require collaboration). Our program becomes a key component of a child’s healing journey, treated like other critical medical equipment, and incorporated into patient care plans.

Our free program is universally accessible and embraces all patients under 18, regardless of illness, ability, socioeconomic background, or other circumstances. Through regular engagement with GO Karts, children alleviate stress and anxiety; are distracted from pain or uncomfortable treatments; foster meaningful connections; and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Combined, these gains lead to improved physical health, healing, and patient outcomes.

We will implement one GO Kart at a partner hospital in Florida (we can collaborate with the Foundation to select a hospital, if preferred). We’ll reach 3,000 children within one year. Together, we’ll not only provide unique play experiences to children; we’ll deliver a tool that revolutionizes the hospital environment and empowers the healing of thousands of children.

Total Project Budget: $52,500

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Gulf Coast Community Foundation (potential), Community Foundation Tampa Bay (potential), Schulze Family Foundation (committed), Anonymous Individual Donor (committed)

Project Duration: We will fully utilize funding in 2025, the year following the grant award in October 2024. It is important to note that our program will last longer than the traditional one-year grant period without additional grant support from the Foundation. GO Karts are incredibly sustainable. Unlike other initiatives that wind down as grant funds are depleted, our project maintains its momentum. The key to our program’s sustainability is our use of durable, eco-friendly materials in the GO Karts. This approach ensures the longevity of each gaming kiosk. At a one-time cost of $3,500 to implement, a GO Kart becomes a permanent resource and piece of medical equipment for pediatric patients. This cost-effective, one-time investment model means that the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s support will continue to impact children in Florida long-term without the need for additional funding.
Geographical Area Served: Florida
Age Group To Be Served: Our program is available to all children under 18 years of age. However, those 6 – 13 years old tend to be most impacted.
