Project Title: Increased Access of Donor Milk for Newborn Babies and Infants
Project Description:

The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) was established in 1990 to provide oversight, guidance, and standardized testing procedures around the donation of human milk. Additionally, the organization worked to build public confidence in the use of safe, pasteurized human milk (PDHM) for pre-term and medically fragile babies and infants. Prior to the organization’s establishment, efforts were disparate across the US. HMBANA is the United States’ only nonprofit organization that accredits and standardizes donor milk collection, testing, pasteurization, and distribution specifically for medically fragile babies and preterm births. In 2022, the total ounces of donor milk distributed through HMBANA’s network of 32 member milk banks rose by 8.4% to 9.9 million ounces throughout North America.

HMBANA’s mission not only saves the lives of newborn babies and infants, but it also reduces the cost of care and improves outcomes for health systems. Significant prematurity and very low birth weight are two of the most expensive diagnoses in pediatric care. An Institute of Medicine (IOM) study, one of the largest reviews of its kind, identified preterm birth as a leading cause of neonatal morbidity, and disability resulting in an annual overall cost in the United States of at least $26 billion. The use of donor milk is not only essential to the healthcare of some of the most fragile individuals in our society, but it is also a widely available, cost-effective resource.

HMBANA is the only organization in North America working to increase access to donor milk while addressing the systemic disparities in access across the country. While the organization relies on membership revenue to facilitate its work, there are unmet needs across North America, specifically related to the alleviation of racial disparities in access to PDHM. Grant funding will have a substantial overall impact on the organization and its ability to advance its mission and achieve its stated goals ultimately saving the lives of pre-term and medically fragile babies.
