Project Title: DRCS After School Program
Project Description:

Deep Roots Charter School serves students living in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. Philadelphia is known for its high poverty rate, educational disparities, and racial inequities manifested through gaps in wealth and health. The Kensington area of the city is no different. The Kensington community is most recognizable by the presence of crime and the impact of the opioid epidemic, evident just by walking through the streets. Additionally, with 38% of students identifying as Black/African American and 40% as Hispanic, our school serves a significant proportion of historically marginalized communities. The School District of Philadelphia data also underscores the prevalence of socioeconomic challenges, as 24.8% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, as evidenced by their families’ reliance on SNAP and TANF support. Thus, the need for increased academic support to address glaring inequities experienced by our vulnerable student body is indisputable.

The proposed after-school program aims to address achievement gaps in literacy and math among children who are performing below grade level, particularly those who have been adversely affected by the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Data consistently show that after-school and extracurricular programs provide a supportive and enriching environment that helps economically disadvantaged students overcome obstacles, develop essential skills, and achieve their full potential in both academic and personal spheres. We aim to engage 100 of our students in the afterschool enrichment program for 1.5 hours after the school day. In doing so, we will make up for the crucial educational time that was lost during the pandemic and address achievement gaps in literacy and math while offering additional academic, social, and developmental opportunities critical for our youth to succeed. Specifically, by providing additional support, we expect to see an increase in grade-level-associated indicators for reading level and math. Using these interventions, we will reshape students’ educational experiences and empower learners left behind by the conventional system.

Total Project Budget: 100000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): We have $20,000 committed to the implementation of the after school program.

Project Duration: August 2024-June 2025

Project Title: Kids Club
Project Description:

The Reclaimed Project’s Youth Program covers kids ages K-12. The Kids Club is a component of that program and focuses on the K-8th grade. The Kids Club is designed to provide students with structure and support to help them thrive. The kids in the program come from a county with 49% poverty amongst children vs. 16.1% in the USA, where the average family income is $31,192, less than half of the U.S. average of $67,521. The county is 72% African American, but 98% of our students who attend are African American. Kids Club uses Dreambox for reading and math to help struggling students. This computer software program is adaptive to the child’s individual needs. Our program aims to equip our children to excel in school, no matter what the situation is at home. We also provide social and emotional support with full-time staff and volunteers and seek to add arts exposure and field trips primarily during our summer enrichment program, in partnership with WinShape. Our program also works hand in hand with our Teacher Fellowship Program, which provides high-quality teachers to the Quitman County School District. Reclaimed partners with local churches and other groups within the Quitman community to provide resources and opportunities to students. We need an additional teacher for our students in order to expand our program. Your support would mean that more students K-8th grade are served in Quitman County, MS.

Project Title: JFC Montessori
Project Description:

Our Montessori Preschool program aims to provide a quality education and unique early intervention opportunity for students enabling them to make the most of their education from K-12. Our school is in Jonestown, MS. Our program comprises a Learning Center for 2-year-old preschoolers and a Montessori program for 3,4- and 5-year-old preschoolers. The funds requested would be used to support purchasing a new reading readiness software to better track the progress of our students. A typical Montessori education costs between $12,000 to $17,000 a year, ensuring that few if any children in poverty could ever afford such a curriculum. Our program is funded 100% from foundations and was started 26+ years ago by a group of nuns. We took over the program in 2018. Our goal is to provide early educational opportunities to impoverished families that they could not otherwise have access to, to help these children reach their greatest potential, and change the cycle of poverty in Jonestown, MS.
Jonestown is located in the Mississippi Delta in the heart of Coahoma County and ranks last in the state of Mississippi in measures of welfare and education. Statistically, 59% of children under 18 live in poverty, and 70% grow up with a single mother. Only 68.8% of adults graduate from high school and only 8.8% have attained a 2-year college degree. Early education is key to changing these trends. The opportunity to immerse our students in language skill building from the time they are two until they leave to go to kindergarten is critical. Statistics show that 1 in 4 children who cannot read by the 3rd grade do not graduate by the time they are 19. Your support would make a difference in the lives of our students.
