Project Title: Project G.R.A.P.E. (Growing Readily Available Produce Everywhere)
Project Description:

Our program, Project G.R.A.P.E., provides easy-to-understand education for our youth participants to allow them to connect biology, ecology and economic topics to the everyday functions of adult life. The purpose of the Project G.R.A.P.E. program is to teach youth in local communities how to grow produce in their community, how to live a well sustained life (educationally, physically and emotionally), and how to become a dedicated community member through leadership and volunteerism. In 2020, COVID exacerbated the hunger crisis that DeKalb County already faced. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, many parts of southern and eastern DeKalb County are considered urban areas that have limited access to high-quality, fresh food. Knowing this, it makes it extremely hard for our community to have inexpensive organic food options. Having limited to no access to organic food negatively impacts the health of families living in low-income communities which can inevitably affect the overall function of the household (i.e. increased hospital visits, heightened financial burdens).
As of now, there are over 84,000 individuals experiencing hunger at a constant rate with 52% of the entire population being below the poverty line. With our Project G.R.A.P.E. program we not only educate youth in creating sustainable lives, but we also create community focused gardens in neighborhoods that don’t have the knowledge or space to grow at home. As of today, we’ve been able to donate over 200 pounds of produce to families experiencing hunger and/or food insecurity.

Project Title: Introducing Blooming Healers
Project Description:

At Queen of Community, we recognize the importance of providing a holistic approach to mentoring and coaching teen girls. By focusing on building self-awareness, we empower these young women to take control of their lives and make informed decisions. Our faith-based activities provide a safe space for them to explore their spirituality, while also promoting teen health and wellness.
We recognize that there is more to a person than just their physical health. Mental and emotional well-being are equally important, and by addressing these areas, we are helping to create a generation of young women who are confident, self-aware, and self-assured.
Our holistic-based activities like sound meditation, yoga, gardening, and journaling provide a unique perspective that is often missing in traditional mentoring and coaching programs. By incorporating spirituality into our approach, we are able to connect with these young women on a deeper level and help them explore their beliefs and values. This approach not only promotes personal growth but also strengthens their connection to their community and the world around them.

Project Title: GRINDfest
Project Description:

Launched in 2021, GRINDfest is an annual festival celebrating Black Business and Entrepreneurship to generate revenue in Black Cash Registers. Last year we had 9,000 visitors from 35 states and generated $100k+ in the cash registers of BIPOC businesses. All vendors were people of color. In 2023, we had 12k attendees for the weekend.

Our board decided that GRINDfest 2024, scheduled on May 24 – May 26, 2024, would be focused on (and driven by) youth. Considering the challenges our youth face, we believe that local celebrations can provide diversion activity, purposeful programming, and a meaningful culmination of our year-round programming.

We partnered with Asheville High School/School of Inquiry and Life Sciences (SILSA) administration and their CTE department to co-create a youth entrepreneurship curriculum. They have given us 5th period for the whole year to support youth in creating and testing out their business ideas. As part of the curriculum, we created revenue-generating activities that would give youth a platform to sell to customers. By working together on this project, youth get to apply their core subject learning to real-life applications as young entrepreneurs.

Since its inception, GRINDFest has hosted 37 vendors supported by over 50 organizational partners, 200 volunteers, and key stakeholders in the community. GRINDfest contributes to the vision of a vibrant, healthy, and connected community by fostering positive connections for people of color. Our sponsors and program partners had all agreed that the vendors and presenters would all be people of color so that all the support and attention would be directed to help bridge economic gaps in our community. By creating a safe and inclusive environment, we encourage networking, collaboration, and mutual support among participants. This strengthens the bonds within the black community, empowering youth to forge lasting connections and build a supportive network.

Project Title: Project Team One Heart
Project Description:

Team One Heart is a two-in-one program designed to promote mental health by exercising both the mind and
body. Everyone knows that physical exercise is a way to get physically healthier, sculpt your body, increase blood flow, decrease, if not eliminate, health problems, as well as get you moving. What most people don’t realize is that physical exercise is an exceptional means to enhance and maintain stable mental health. Physical exercise lifts your mood, reduces stress and anxiety, decreases depression, and teaches you breathing techniques. One’s mental state plays a huge role in their physical state because mental illnesses like depression and anxiety cultivate negative thoughts, leaves you feeling fatigued, and decimates one’s social skills. Likewise, physical healthy can have an impact on one’s mental state. Physical and mental health have a yin-and-yang affect where when one decreases from it’s normal range, it will throw the other off. Having a perfect balance of mental and physical healthy is key to overcoming issues like anxiety, paranoia, sleep deprivation, and various organ diseases.
With Project Team One Heart, we want to help the youth understand what their body is feeling, why it is feeling that way, what their body needs, and how to combat those negative feelings in a healthy way. This program will incorporate various exercise classes that allow the students to focus less on the negative thoughts, and focus more on the task at hand—be it kickboxing, yoga, meditation, or stretching. Our project goals and objectives are such:
Goals:
– Reduce and prevent suicide, mental, and substance disorders
– Decrease the number of students and young adults abusing alcohol
– Improve the identification and treatment of at-risk students and young adults
– Increase the number of free physical exercise classes available that focus on mental health
Objectives:
– Enhance mental health services for all students and young adults
– Promote help-seeking behavior by 35%
– Decrease the negative stigma around mental health assistance among our participants by 65%
We seek to open the lines of communication with our participants to understand what they are going through and how they feel about mental health, therapy, physical fitness, serious mental illness (SMI), and serious emotional disturbances (SED). We want to provide talking sessions and assessments that will allow us to measure where the participants start out, and how our program has affected them by the end.
