Project Title: Project Team One Heart
Project Description:

Team One Heart is a two-in-one program designed to promote mental health by exercising both the mind and
body. Everyone knows that physical exercise is a way to get physically healthier, sculpt your body, increase blood flow, decrease, if not eliminate, health problems, as well as get you moving. What most people don’t realize is that physical exercise is an exceptional means to enhance and maintain stable mental health. Physical exercise lifts your mood, reduces stress and anxiety, decreases depression, and teaches you breathing techniques. One’s mental state plays a huge role in their physical state because mental illnesses like depression and anxiety cultivate negative thoughts, leaves you feeling fatigued, and decimates one’s social skills. Likewise, physical healthy can have an impact on one’s mental state. Physical and mental health have a yin-and-yang affect where when one decreases from it’s normal range, it will throw the other off. Having a perfect balance of mental and physical healthy is key to overcoming issues like anxiety, paranoia, sleep deprivation, and various organ diseases.
With Project Team One Heart, we want to help the youth understand what their body is feeling, why it is feeling that way, what their body needs, and how to combat those negative feelings in a healthy way. This program will incorporate various exercise classes that allow the students to focus less on the negative thoughts, and focus more on the task at hand—be it kickboxing, yoga, meditation, or stretching. Our project goals and objectives are such:
Goals:
– Reduce and prevent suicide, mental, and substance disorders
– Decrease the number of students and young adults abusing alcohol
– Improve the identification and treatment of at-risk students and young adults
– Increase the number of free physical exercise classes available that focus on mental health
Objectives:
– Enhance mental health services for all students and young adults
– Promote help-seeking behavior by 35%
– Decrease the negative stigma around mental health assistance among our participants by 65%
We seek to open the lines of communication with our participants to understand what they are going through and how they feel about mental health, therapy, physical fitness, serious mental illness (SMI), and serious emotional disturbances (SED). We want to provide talking sessions and assessments that will allow us to measure where the participants start out, and how our program has affected them by the end.
