Project Title: GuVo District Tohono O’Odham Cultural Sewing Club
Project Description:

NAAF works on behalf of the Tohono O’odham Nation, which is the second largest Native American reservation in both population and land size on the U.S.-Mexico border. NAAF works specifically with residents living in the GuVo District, which is the Nation’s western most District located in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona. It is a beautiful land, but one defined by economic hardship and a lack of infrastructure/resources. Even the Tohono O’odham language is considered to be an endangered language.

As such, one of NAAF’s areas of focus is on Language and Culture. As members of the Nation, NAAF has a vested interest and long-term commitment to preserving the District’s heritage, customs, beliefs and language. This includes the teaching and development of traditional Tohono O’odham art, handicrafts, language, gardening, and cultural history. Now, NAAF is seeking support to start a Districtwide “Sewing Club” so that community elders can use their love of sewing to teach the younger generation this fun and useful skill.

NAAF’s Health and Prevention Team would oversee these activities as a means of ensuring traditional meaningful designs are not lost, and that the younger generations learn the importance of continue the traditions of Native People being able to communicate their identity through their clothing. Funding would be used to purchase sewing supplies and materials, including a small number of sewing machines. As envision, the group would meet monthly to socialize, host workshops/tutorials, and create a fun, hands-on, cultural experience where community elders can use their knowledge and experience to help younger generations learn about their heritage by making Tohono O’odham apparel, or other crafts, and sharing the meaning behind the designs.

Total Project Budget: $3,500

Project Title: I Belong Project
Project Description:

The I Belong Project unites volunteers, local businesses, creatives, social workers, and faith leaders to create a trauma-informed ‘video and photo shoot’ experience that features children in foster care waiting for an adoptive family. Children are empowered to share their stories and unique attributes with a trained interviewer. Before the day is over each child receives a professional photo, clothes, school supplies, and a gift to demonstrate their value and worth.

The end result of this experience is a recruiting package of photos, inspiring quotes, and a high-quality video which can be used to generate inquiries from interested foster families willing to adopt. This recruiting package becomes the catalyst for a partnership between VKB, local and state DSS case managers, private placement agencies case managers, and a state-wide network of concerned community members with the goal of matching each child with a safe, loving family and helping that child achieve permanency.

Since beginning this project in 2019, 65 kids from the greater Richmond area have participated on their journey towards permanency. To date, approximately 50% of kids who participate in the I Belong Project are matched with adoptive families within 12 months versus potentially staying in the foster care system for years or aging out.

Because of Virginia’s low national ranking for the percentage of youth aging out of foster care without finding a permanent home, the I Belong Project remains one of the strongest programmatic interventions the Commonwealth supports to make progress in moving the needle on this statistic.

Requested Amount: $9,500

Project Title: Closing the Gap on Children’s Vision
Project Description:

The Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation’s current request is for eye exams for school children without vision insurance or the means to pay. The Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation‘s newest program “Closing the Gap on Children’s Vision Screeningtm “ was created to bring vision exams and eyeglasses directly to the school for students with no vision insurance and those on AHCCCS. This program is made possible by a strong partnership with school nurses, the Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation, and One Source Mobile Eye Healthcare.
This program was created due to the overwhelming concerns and requests by school nurses for help to address the ever-increasing number of children that are identified to be seen by an eye doctor, yet no action is taken by the parent. This growing population of children are not being taken to an eye doctor after the parent is notified by the school nurse or teacher that their child did not pass an eye screening or is having difficulty seeing the “board” or reading the words on a page. Too many times the child suffers due to this lack of action resulting in disciplinary issues, poor grades, and a lack of self-esteem due to failing grades.

A grant from the Hermanowski Foundation could provide 100 school-aged children with an eye exam. Prescription eyeglasses would be funded by donations from Arizona Lions Clubs and working poor donations. The Foundation has funding for eyeglasses when needed from AZ Lions Clubs.

Services could be delivered during the next school year at any of the following school sites:
Whitman and Kerr Elementary Schools, Don Mensendick, Sunset Elementary, Anthem K-8, Ironwood Elementary, Road Runner, Patterson Elementary, Royal Palms Middle School, Mountain View, Discovery Elementary, Glen F. Burton School, Liberty Elementary, Sunny Slope, Palm Valley, Palo Verde, Marco De Niza, Pueblo Del Sol, Avondale Middle School, and Lattie Coore Elementary.

Project Title: Free Classroom Composting Program
Project Description:

Let’s Go Compost has a goal to make composting free and accessible. Our classroom composting program uses STEAM principles to teach students about composting and sustainability principles through science, technology, engineering, art, and math. We use upcycled buckets to create the free compost bins. Currently, we are not able to provide teachers with Red Wiggler worms and they must purchase them on their own. Worms for each bucket cost approximately $8 through a local vendor (AZ Worm Farm) or online through Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm. We would like to provide the teachers with the composting worms so they do not have to pay out of pocket or apply for grants for them. The $1,100 grant funding would allow us to give 125 buckets with worms.

Project Title: Bnos Agudas Yisroel (BAY)
Project Description:

Bnos Agudas Yisroel (BAY) is a mentorship program for girls in elementary and middle schools throughout the country, where they are provided the opportunity to participate in after school youth groups, led by high school girls. Our 7 South Florida BAY branches include Miami, Boca Raton, Boca Raton East, Aventura, Hollywood, Surfside, and North Miami Beach. The goal of the project is to give elementary and middle school aged girls an opportunity to thrive in a non-academic environment. Additionally, through our program and our mentorship arrangements, girls are given healthy outlets and positive attention, which we have seen is incredibly effective at preventing them from being exposed to and engaging in unhealthy outlets (alcohol/substance abuse, premature sexual activity) that often initially stems from negative peer influence. The volunteer BAY leaders are local high school girls, vetted by BAY advisors to make sure they are suitable role models for participants at their impressionable stage. Each branch maintains robust yearly programming including weekly Saturday afternoon youth groups where girls between the ages of kindergarten through 8th grade participate in recreational and wholesome activities, and 8-10 annual group trips, for activities like swimming or ice skating. Through its wholesome, interactive programming and promotion of healthy relationships (both peer to peer and mentee to mentor), BAY provides young, impressionable girls with positive and productive influences in their lives at this young, impressionable stage, setting them up for success as they continue to age and grow into productive, healthy young adults.

Project Title: Yahalom Florida
Project Description:

Yahalom Florida is a project of Agudath Israel of America, a national not-for-profit organization. We are currently in the initial launch stage of this program with the goal of creating a comprehensive referral center for children with special needs and disabilities. This project is modeled after successful Yahalom branches in other states. Within the special needs population, there is a tremendous gap between the programs and services available and those who would benefit from them. Parents spend thousands of dollars they can hardly afford on therapies, equipment or transportation, not knowing that it can be covered by state programs. Or worse, the children don’t receive the services at all, due to lack of affordability and parents’ awareness of the volunteered, free or subsidized services. Yahalom is there to bridge that gap, and connect families and caretakers of special needs children to resources that will allow them to thrive. We connect parents to community and state resources, guiding them through the (oftentimes bureaucratic and intimidating) processes and applications and we offer guidance on various schools, camps, therapies, and insurance policies that will best suit the specific needs of each individual. Additionally, Yahalom creates a community for the families of special needs children. Yahalom arranges sibshops for siblings of special needs children so they can enjoy a few hours of specialized attention. We also offer events for the parents, where they are given the opportunity to network and connect with other parents. The primary goal of Yahalom Florida is to centralize and streamline all forms of support for children with special needs and their families, so that parents can easily access and provide those services to their child, ultimately maximizing the quality of life of the special needs child and enabling them to achieve their greatest potential.
